Imperial have their last dance at the Major as CPH Flames secure final playoff spot

The Brazilians were utterly outclassed on the first map, only to take Vertigo the distance.

Copenhagen Flames finally banished the demons of the previous Major by securing their spot in the playoffs, besting the Brazilian legends of Imperial 16-2 on Inferno and 22-18 on Vertigo.

Imperial captured the hearts of many this Major with their impressive performances, showing real poise under pressure and they nearly took the Danes to a third map in this series. Copenhagen Flames were likely the better team, but needed to wrestle with their nerves to take the final map over the line, something Nico "nicoodoz" Tamjidi referenced in his post-match interview.

Copenhagen Flames triumphed in a nail-biting Vertigo

The series began with Inferno, the pick of Imperial, with Copenhagen Flames on CT. The Danes started brightly, winning the pistol and converting it into a dominant CT half; Rasmus "Zyphon" Nordfoss was a menace over at A, and the varied setups from the Flames left Imperial struggling to find an answer. The Brazilians did manage to pick up a couple of rounds, entirely off the back of Vinicius "VINI" Figueiredo cracking open bombsites, but it was only good enough for an abysmal 2-13 half.

A pistol win for Copenhagen Flames put the result beyond doubt and the Danes duly closed the map out with zero fuss, the final score 16-2.

Next up was Vertigo, and once again Copenhagen Flames found themselves benefiting from a strong start, this time on the T side. A pistol win was converted by the Danes, and although Imperial did manage to battle their way to a few rounds early, it was never comfortable for the Brazilians, and slowly but surely Flames began to build a lead. Ultimately Imperial let too many 5v4 situations get away from them to win the half, but a late streak did net them a 6-9 score going into the second period.

A pistol win and follow-up round gave Imperial a way back into the game, and despite a string of three in reply from the Copenhagen Flames the Brazilians managed take control of the game, grinding their way all the way back to 13-13 by finally capitalising on their opening kills. The final throes of the map were a brawl, both teams digging deep to find unlikely round wins, the score ending 15-15 to go into overtime.

Overtime displayed both Copenhagen Flames prowess Vertigo, as well as their tendency to struggle in high pressure situations; after getting themselves to a 3-1 lead in the first OT period, they choked away two match points, one in a favoured 4v3 situation. The Danes made no mistake in the second period of OT, however, taking four rounds on the bounce to secure a 22-18 victory and the final spot in the playoffs.

It's great for the scene and media in Denmark definitely. A lot of Danish fans are hoping for another "era" tier team. I do see the potential in the talent pool, getting the perfect hand-in-glove fit miiight take a bit of time though *if* it can happen. Then again, the two times Danish CS has provided teams of that caliber it was in two different games with 10 years (give or take) separating them. >.>

To be honest I think it is nicer to have several T1 teams as opposed to a single top team. Also, personally, I find “eras” boring - they reflect stagnation more than they reflect achievement. That’s why this major has been so fun to watch so far - there are literally no free wins and any matchup could reasonably go either way. Wouldn’t be surprised if we see some upsets in the playoffs.

Agreed, I never personally claimed I wanted one team to dominate all definitely, just reflecting on what I hear a lot of people claim they wish for. Actually if we would be speaking in terms of patriotism I find multiple great teams to be more fun to watch than one dominant team, especially when they go against each other. Plus who doesn't love an underdog story, like I'd believe CPH Flames are when compared to legendary names in other teams.

It's like Brazilian CS. If they aren't dominating is not enough. It was well deserved for Imperial, but it's nice to see CPH moving on.

Unfortunately in many sports (including esports) communities, people tend to take competitive trolling to a new level that it can be personal. For some people they want to see good CS, for some they want more fuel to banter with on forums or twitch chat about "their" team being better. People find entertainment in different ways.

It was indeed an amazing experience to see those guys back there were they belong. I'm heartbroken but happy at the same time... we have so much room to grow as a team and also individually. The statement here is "Fallen's CS still works", the way he lead and think the game. I see a lot of non-brazillian's questioning FNX, but CS isn't just about the stats... they didn't came back because of that, for them it's about the JOURNEY together, all over again and he is an important piece to that puzzle called HAPPINESS. He will take his performances to the heart tho and like a phoenix, he will be back stronger for the next chapter! They just started after all. Such a wholesome run. GG Flames as well, they take us seriously, that's all we can ask from them and the whole scene.

This is not their last dance. Just a rehearsal. ;) But seriously, what a show they put on. Had no idea what to expect coming into this major, it was already awesome that they qualified to begin with. But Fallen is truly one of a kind. Made me a fan in 2016, and still get excited just to watch him play 6 years later.

Not everyone likes them. Take the old Virtus Pro lineup, some would say "Oh how could you not like them?" Well I never did. And if I was to give you one good reason, I highly doubt YOU would consider it a good reason. I could just as easily ask "Give me 20 good reasons why I should give 1 good reason to an American" Just because you say "everyone" likes them doesn't mean I have to like them. But since you want a reason... Not a fan of how they play, their personalities are just annoying, I've never been a fan of many Danish teams (No offense to anyone from Denmark, you guys are great), and they unfortunately had to win today when I wanted Imperial to win (Didn't have Imperial in my pick'ems and I ended up with 6 points this stage) so I hope Ence just end their major run here.

Everyone loves them. They play as any team strives to play, and the nicest most likable players are all in this roster. 0/8 you need to understand true CS

LMAO honestly I can't take anything an American says seriously. And trust me I understand CS. Also I've watched those fucks work their way up over the years. And just saying that they are nice isn't really a good reason to like a team. And not everyone loves them, I bet I could jump into any CS major and find people that don't. 0/8? The fuck is that about?

imperial lost so many winnable rounds thats a shame but nice comeback attempt, should have closed in that 15x14. hope they do well in dallas. such a dumb move to pick inferno today.

Yep, they really feared/played way too slow against that forcebuy on 15-14... They should have won vertigo and from there God knows what would have happened on OVP

WP by CPH Flames! They were able to stay calm on Vertigo to close it out, even against one map point for Imperial on the regular time. Hope they keep showing good CS on the playoffs. And for Imperial, just amazing performance on the Major run, with just 4 months lineup. Hope they keep improving and come back stronger on IEM Dallas and ESL Cologne.

Let's be honest, it was miracle imperial made it this far, nice fairy tale tho. I like fnx, but if they want to be somewhat relevant around T2, they should pickup someone else. The thing is, they are quite good, actually better than we all thought. From now on it will be just one guy holding them back i am afraid...

RIP to no fnx no major nevermind this meme. Good CS, I mean I am amazed by how well Imperial played as a unit, special credit to Fallen no doubt. I think CHF are hungrier and play togather for much longer. GG by both sides, again the match is decided by the little nuances (viewer bias of course), the only thing I would point out was B ramp molly on vertigo

Funny how to HLTV, Imperial did not "outclass" C9 yesterday. The double standards are brutal.

They didn't outclass them bro they just sent them packing. Its to add spice to the headlines and articles, or would you rather just have every post like this say "Team A beats Team B"

This was a crazy day, people don't understand how Brazilian fan's eyes shine when we watch this lineup playing. Most people also don't know where these guys came from. I thought it was gonna be double dose of happiness, since furia qualified today although we gotta understand they've been together for just 3 months. Just repeating what a day for br community. We're proud of what IMPERIAL did. Who knows we can go further on the next major.
