IEM Dallas 2022FaZe defeat Vitality to reach playoffs; Astralis send Encore home
Two teams have secured playoff spots while two teams are heading home early.
The final two matches of the first day at IEM Dallas saw FaZe and Vitality face off for a spot in the playoffs, while Astralis took on Encore to avoid elimination.
In the upper bracket semi-final, Vitality put up a fight on Dust2, but ultimately fell to the Major champions 0-2 (11-16 Dust2, 6-16 Nuke). With the victory, FaZe have secured a spot in the playoffs, while Vitality are sent to the lower bracket where they will face MOUZ for survival at the event in Texas. In the other matchup, Astralis took down the Oceanic representatives (16-3 Vertigo, 16-9 Nuke) to keep themselves alive in the lower bracket.
The series between Vitality and FaZe kicked off on the French-Danish mix's pick of Dust2. Vitality's T side started off quite strong, stringing up a 7-5 lead, but they ended up finishing the half one round behind. After the sides swapped over, the FaZe offense proved far too strong, and Vitality were unable to stop the power duo of Russel "Twistzz" Van Dulken and Robin "ropz" Kool, dropping map one 11-16.
Moving on to Nuke, FaZe were much more in control, posting a 9-6 lead from the Terrorist side. It was once again the Norwegian veteran who stepped up on the Counter-Terrorist side for FaZe, securing 12 frags in the second half to help his team close out the map 16-10 and claim a spot in the playoffs.
For the elimination match, Encore were unable to get an offense rolling on Vertigo against Astralis. Despite having a couple of close rounds, the Australian majority side could only muster two rounds in the first half, with Asger "Farlig" Jensen absolutely dominating on the Astralis defense. The Danes quickly closed out the map, and moved on to Nuke.
A combination of frags from Mike "ap0c" Aliferis and Benson "Liki" Niuila gave Encore a more competitive start to Nuke as they won the CT pistol round. This led to a brief 3-2 lead, but they ultimately fell behind by the end of the half only taking five rounds. Jared "hazr" O'Bree put up a heroic performance in the second half, but Encore were unable to mount a full comeback, and eventually lost Nuke 9-16.
