Astralis reverse-sweep MOUZ, reach IEM Cologne semi-final

The Danes' next challenge comes in the form of Natus Vincere.

Kicking off the playoffs at this year's IEM Cologne was the quarter-final matchup between Astralis and MOUZ, with the Danish side emerging victorious three hard-fought maps later. Astralis dropped Mirage 8-16, took their map pick of Nuke, 16-9, and completed the reverse sweep with a 16-12 win on Ancient.

The result sets the Danes up for a high-stakes match against Natus Vincere in the semi-final, where the winner will move on to the grand final of the million-dollar tournament.

Although MOUZ's run in Cologne ends in the first round of the playoffs, they finish in 5-6th place, which marks their highest Big Event placing of the year so far. Their journey through the competition was nothing short of exceptional, putting up a tremendous effort in their 1-2 losses to Astralis and Natus Vincere while dispatching of higher-ranked opposition in HEROIC, Vitality, and Ninjas in Pyjamas along the way.

Astralis reverse-sweep MOUZ to make the semi-final

The first map of the series was extremely competitive off the bat, with MOUZ pulling off a full-eco conversion in the third round and a crucial Lukas "gla1ve" Rossander triple-kill in the sixth as both sides reached a 3-3 stalemate. MOUZ were then able to gain a small 6-3 lead thanks to their B site pushes, blowing through any resistance Astralis put in place.

gla1ve's crew were able to score back-to-back rounds to bring them within one, but MOUZ's opening kills courtesy of Jon "JDC" de Castro and Christopher "dexter" Nong overwhelmed the Astralis defense, as the European mix hit double-digits and entered the switch up 10-5. Coming out of halftime, MOUZ delivered a statement performance on their CT side as they rolled to a 16-8 win on their map pick by shutting Astralis' site advances down, securing important clutches and eco rounds, and eventually picking up the 1-0 series lead.

Astralis opened up Nuke with a solid attacking side display, constantly switching up their playstyle between fast and slow-paced en route to a 7-2 score, with Benjamin "blameF" Bremer and Asger "Farlig" Jensen's nine and eight kills leading the way. Despite their slow start, MOUZ were able to score four of the half's last six rounds to reduce their gap to three, highlighted by an electrifying AWP triple-kill from Ádám "torzsi" Torzsás in the 12th.

Farlig was one of Astralis' keys to victory on Nuke

A three-for-three exchange got the second half underway, with Farlig dropping a triple-kill in the 17th for Astralis and dexter hitting a crucial ace for his team in the 20th, giving MOUZ a much-needed momentum boost. Within arm's reach of victory, the Danes wasted no time in closing out Nuke 16-9 behind Farlig's 24 kills, extending the series and ultimately forcing a decider on Ancient.

Just like the first map, Ancient started off with a 3-3 scoreline with both teams trading three-round sprees. Astralis proceeded to take a narrow 5-3 lead and were looking good to secure their sixth until JDC singlehandedly put an end to the Danes' B site retake, armed with nothing more than a Tec-9 in a 1vs4 situation. The ninth round clutch would be a turning point for MOUZ, as they capitalized off of Astralis' economic and weapon disadvantages and closed out the first half with a 9-6 lead.

After swapping sides, Astralis were able to match MOUZ's lead at nine apiece, however the European mix squad fought valiantly to keep the Danes from taking control of the game as they went back-and-forth for the subsequent rounds, with the in-game leaders dexter and gla1ve stepping up massively for their respective teams in both fragging and shotcalling. In the end, Astralis were able to overcome everything MOUZ threw their way with a 16-12 Ancient win, pulling off the reverse-sweep and booking their spot in the semi-final.

This tournament is so weird. THe only top10 teams in the playoffs are the 2 best teams in the world. People talked trash about EPL because a lot of fluke happened. But the level of EPL playoffs were much higher than this. Astralis just needed to beat a top 14 team to go to the semi-finals wtf.

Well you are making it sound like both Astralis and Mouz didn't go up against any top opposition before qualifying for the playoffs. Astralis defeated 3 Top 10 oppositions before qualifying, Mouz defeated 2. It ain't their fault that Top 10 teams didn't perform like the way they were supposed to, they shit the bed, they deserve to not be here in playoffs. Any top 20 opposition beating any other top 20 opposition is good for the scene in general. It means any team can win over any other which leads to more exciting matchups, no heavy favourites means open tournament and everyone with an actual chance. It makes the game more exciting

I am not saying its the tournaments fault. I am just stating a fact that this playoff is low level because of all the flukes. And when flukes happened on EPL a lot of people talked trash about the format. My point is that its possible to have fluke playoffs on any tournament.

My point is that its common sense to talk thrash about the EPL format (when epl was happenning a lot of people were talking thrash ), but its possible to have fluke playoffs in any format. Cologne have the lowest level playoff from all the tier 1 tournaments we had this year. I am not saying its bad for the game or not.

Is it really a *fluke * if the top ranked teams keep failing to make playoffs again and again? Or is it more like the rankings aren't proving much of a distinction between other teams of top 20 and that they are just numbers that don't necessarily mean that one team is definite better than the other?

I know the top20 teams as very close to each other. But when you have a tierS tournament and just 2 top 10 make it through the playoffs its a fluke. I dont know what caused the fluke, But its a fluke. I am not talking about vitality and g2 because everybody knows how unstable they are. But ence,c9,nip those are all great teams that underperformed on this tournament. Of course this dont take away the credits of the underdogs that qualified to the playoffs.

See you are contradicting yourself here. On one hand you agree that Top 20 teams are closer to each other skill wise and on the other hand you say that top 10 teams not making it to playoffs is a fluke even though the same happened in EPL and it can't always be a fluke like this. You are acting like some top 30 or out of 30 made it to the playoffs. It's still Top 15 teams when it comes to Astralis and Mouz, Top 20 when it comes to TL and MR, they haven't came out of nowhere, they have been dwindling in the top 20s for long. Or course likes of Ence and C9 underperformed, but no team in Top 20 really has been consistent this year, have they?

I am not contradicting myself. I said the level is close between them. But just 2 top 10 going to the playoffs of a tier S tornament is very rare. So its a fluke. I know the teams didnt came out of nowhere. But having 6 teams like this on the playoffs of a tier S tournament is rare, as I said.

You call it a fluke But then you say teams are mostly similar, and also say that it happened in EPL. Fluke is once, very rare that twice it happens it will get termed as a fluke. You in your own words are making 2 different statements, arguments and counter arguments for what you say. Cologne changes haven't been in affect yet, good chance Astralis comes back to Top 10 at the back of this tournament by Monday. That will prove everything, another top 10 team in playoff, one S tournament and Astralis back in Top 10 meaning the difference between current rank of Astralis and the ones above them aren't that much to begin with. In light of that, these are not flukes! The current ranking is not a suitable representation of the abilities of the teams, the ones ranked below in Top 20 are similar or even better on their days than the ones ranked higher in the top 20
