The Ukrainian superstar was a level above the rest in Natus Vincere's run to the final.

Oleksandr "⁠s1mple⁠" Kostyliev expanded his medal collection after claiming the HLTV x Bitskins MVP award at IEM Cologne 2022, bringing his personal tally to 21. It was a bittersweet reward as the 24-year-old marksman dominated the tournament starting from the group stage all the way to the final, but fell short at the last hurdle.

This is the second MVP medal the Ukrainian earned this year, coming less than a month after the one taken from BLAST Premier Spring Final where he broke the record for the most individual awards won by a player. It is also his third medal earned at IEM Cologne, with the first two coming from Natus Vincere's victories in 2018 and 2021.

s1mple claimed the MVP medal despite falling short in the final

s1mple was unplayable throughout the whole tournament as he propelled Natus Vincere to their third IEM Cologne grand final. Some of his best performances came from the group stage games against MOUZ and Movistar Riders where he dropped a 1.36 and 1.31 rating respectively. He carried this level into the playoffs as he powered his team to glory against Astralis in the semi-final and two map victories against FaZe - the only ones the that European squad lost at the event.

The "Undertaker" accumulated a 1.25 rating and topped the charts for KD-diff (+95), KPR (0.84), and rounds with 1+ frags (55.1%) while also shining in other categories such as clutches (2nd), total headshots (3rd), and opening kills (4th). Realistically, s1mple was by far the main contender for the MVP medal before the grand final even started, with Benjamin "⁠blameF⁠" Bremer being the closest player to the award.

During the final, Russel "⁠Twistzz⁠" Van Dulken, Helvijs "⁠broky⁠" Saukants, and Håvard "⁠rain⁠" Nygaard all had their moments of brilliance which brought their case for MVP closer to s1mple's. However, the Ukrainian AWPer performed well enough across all five maps to stay ahead in the race.

And that's pretty much how it's been with HLTV MVPs. Happened a ton of times. Factoring recency bias out is very tough for most people. Logically, s1mple's MVP is pretty expected lol, just like how it's always been in such situations.

I would agree if Twistzz played poorly the rest of the tournament, but he didn't. Purely by rating, him and rain were the exact same at the end with 1.16 and personally with the impact he had in the finals as a whole and considering the fact Faze won the final, I would favor Twistzz for MVP. While s1mple was the most consistent of his team, he wasn't full on carrying every game. Mouz: he carried NIP: he and sdy carried Movistar: he carried Astralis: b1t carried Faze: electroNic was their best player If he had a carry performance in the final and despite that, they lost, I would've given it to him, but his performance in the finals was just good for a star AWP-er. I also think that the 'voting' for MVP was started somewhere in the middle of the final after the first map, which is just silly. That's just not giving anyone in the running before the finals a chance to catch up if s1mple has a bad game.

The voting doesnt decide who gets mvp. Stats do. Hltv does not care about anyone's opinion while giving official mvps. They only care about their stat system. And according to that, s1mple had the highest rating and impact rating in 15 maps he played this whole tournament. So he got the mvp. Simple as that! Dont know why ppl are crying about it. I wouldn't be surprised if HLTV picked their MVP to be the same as the DHL MVP, so that's why I mentioned voting. Apart from that: people are 'crying' about it (just think it's unfair and express their opinion) because it's a short-sighted thing to just look at the stats and impact in the tournament as a whole. If you look at just the play-offs for instance, s1mple played on the level of both rain and Twistzz. While in the finals alone he played below their level. It can (and I'd agree) be argued that these matches were far more important and thus more VALUABLE than the group stage matches that had almost 0 pressure for these two teams. While Twistzz only carried on Nuke, he played really well throughout the rest of the tournament as well, and considering that both Na'Vi and Faze shouldn't have any problems with the rest of the opposition in this tournament, the finals is without a doubt the most valuable match. While he maybe only carried on Nuke, his impact on the other maps was also big. And it's a big part in what made the WIN the finals. Meanwhile, s1mple's underperformance in the finals, especially on Nuke, can be argued to be a factor why Na'Vi lost. If you want to mention recency bias, I think there's a s1mple bias these days. He's just been so good that people will think he should be MVP of every tournament where he makes the finals, regardless of them winning or losing. But this tournament he was only that good in the group stages and it padded his stats. That's why a lot of people think this is undeserved.

Well I see your point but I disagree. I honestly believe mvps should given to the most consistent player with the highest peaks. Coz imagine if karrigan popped off in finals in just one map. I wont be surprised if ppl started saying "karrigan robbed" As far as recency bias goes, twistzz' nuke performance has sich a strong recency bias on faze fans, they just dont wanna look at statistics. Eye-test wise everyone's mvp can be different that's why stats is the only objective way where each player is evaluated equally according to their performance. Though I get it you have different opinions. So it's best we dont discuss it anymore. It's not like we audience can decide who gets the mvp.

I wouldn't give Twistzz the mvp if he played mediocre CS the rest of the tournament, but he still had a 1.16 rating overall. I just feel like s1mple wasn't a difference maker, especially in the play-offs, while Twistzz was. Problem with stats is that they don't tell the full story. Stats don't tell you the impact of a clutch in a 14-14 on the last map of the finals, but I'd argue those should have more impact than a clutch in the group stage 10-0 up.

I value being a difference maker in a 16-8 that your team was playing good enough to win in not super high. He also played poorly on Ancient, just like on Nuke, but they won that time. It's not like on Mirage he carried. He wasn't 'there' either. It's only 2 out of 5 maps that he actually played well in the finals. When you give the MVP to someone who loses the finals, in my opinion, this person also has to have had a great or they must've carried their team completely to the final. That's where the individual gets enough value to compensate for the loss in the final. But that's where our opinions differ, which is how it is. I will also say that I have a slight bias towards Twistzz because I wanted him to get the MVP before the tournament started. I still stand by my points though, but just to clarify.

Yeah but realistically Navi and Faze are head and shoulders above everyone else right now. Faze did not drop a map on the way to the finals and that maps that Navi lost against MRS and mouz was basically the latter two punching above their weight - but the series were never in jeopardy. Not saying that s1mple didn't deserve it for his performances against lesser teams, but they would have won those matches even if s1mple hadn't popped off. Twistzz single-handedly won Faze the deciding map in the grand final - and he was not shabby in other matches either (that 1v3 to close ancient vs MRS, for example). Twistzz had insane impact for Faze at the times that it really mattered, even if s1mple's statistics are better overall.

S1mple dissapeared last 3 maps where as twistzz shone and is the reason why FaZe won the final. I understand handing mvp to the loser if he was head and shoulders above everyone but he finished as the third highest rated player of the event thus someone from FaZe deserved it more.

When you consider the whole event, I think s1mple still is head and shoulders above the rest of the viable candidates. He has 1.25 rating after final and no one else from FaZe or NaVi even has 1.15. The only other player even close who made the playoffs was BlameF, so I guess there’s the argument that technically BlameF was above him so s1mple wasn’t head and shoulders above everyone else, but for any reasonable MVP candidate he was better. S1mple disappearing for 3 maps out of the whole tournament and still being highest rated of the players left by a mile is pretty insane. MVP for a tournament is supposed to award the best player across the whole tournament, not the final. Twistzz was 100% the MVP of the final. However, s1mple was closer to the best player in the event overall, because he had nearly the highest rating and played every match possible. It seems weird because of the recency of Twistzz’s performance and because s1mple disappeared on the most recent maps played, but it’s pretty clear s1mple’s average performance at the event was way better than anyone from FaZe.

Twistzz (and rain) both ended the event with a 1.16 rating. While you can't deny s1mple was probably the best player of the tournament, MVP is not just that. Is it Valuable to be the best player in the tournament when you don't win it? I personally see MVP as the difference-maker throughout the tournament to allow a team to perform at their best. The problem for me concerning s1mple is that literally every other match outside the final was a stomp from both Na'Vi and Faze, and in these everyone on both teams stepped up. Yes, s1mple was the most consistent, but then when it mattered most, he fell off a bit. I find it more Valuable to have Twistzz who played well throughout the entire tournament and then stepped it up in all the important rounds. It's not like Twistzz is Skadoodle from Boston. Skadoodle played just average for an AWP-er with very little impact in C9's other games, and thus probably didn't deserve the MVP, and there was too much recency bias. I actually think there is a bit of a s1mple-bias, where s1mple has to have a less than 1.2 rating for him not to be automatically considered MVP, which (as I've stated above) is just not great. It just feels like some critical thinking gets lost when we talk about him. That being said, I think it's 50-50 for this tournament and I just value the performance in the finals more because it was literally the only big match for both of these teams.

But rating 2.0 is not the same as overall value. What do you value more: a big performance in the group stage under 0 pressure, or a big performance in the finals under all the pressure. The MVP of the finals based on stats would be broky, but I find that his impact (based on eye-test) was okay, but not to the level of Twistzz. It was Twistzz who came up clutch multiple times with 1v3's and big entries. So for me, he would be the MVP of the finals. s1mple's problem in my opinion is that he farmed the group stage. The semis he played good, but it was b1t who carried, while in the finals, he fell off as the BO5 went on. They were up 2-1 and partly because s1mple started falling off, they lost. Meanwhile, Twistzz just played a very consistent game throughout the tournament and then when the biggest moments came his way, he stepped up. I consider this more valuable.

One: not every game has the same importance. Playing well against a team that you'd beat even at 50% is far less valuable than playing well against a team where you need to be at your best. Similarly, playing well when in a group stage where you can still lose a game and not be out of the tournament is far less valuable than playing well when losing means being out of the tournament. In the more important matches, s1mple played worse. s1mple carried 2 out of their 5 games, one of which they won because of it, the other it was just a stomp by the whole team, The reason I consider Twistzz more valuable as a whole is because while he played worse over the whole tournament, he stepped it up when needed. That's what I value more.

Even if they were to award a player on Faze the MVP, it would be Rain, who had consistently good performances throughout the entire tournament, I clouding in the grand final, not Twistzz. The recency bias for the last 3 rounds of Nuke is insane.

Twistzz and rain literally played equally consistently the whole tournament. You're just biased against recency bias. You can make the case for rain though, if you want to. But I feel like Twistzz stepping up in big clutches and even more so at the end gives him the edge.

I would argue that in this case, the final was the only really big match for either team, and thus the finals should be valued more than the other matches. They each played 4 other matches, all of them against teams they were expected to beat, even if they weren't on their best game, thus the impact/value of high performances in those games is less in my opinion.

He was decent for a star AWP-er, but in the play-offs, he didn't have an MVP-level performance and you can definitely argue that these games are more VALUABLE.

You're saying that as if Twistzz and rain played poorly the rest of the event. They still had a 1.16 rating in those. There are a couple of factors here where you could argue that everything before the finals is (significantly) less valuable than the finals itself. The first is just what's at stake. Playing well in a game where losing means you get eliminated from the tournament should be more valuable than playing well in a game where you still have second chances. Second is the opponent. Playing well against a stronger opponent should be more valuable than playing well against a weaker opponent. Another argument against s1mple in this discussion is that his performance wasn't much of a difference-maker for Na'Vi in the matches where he played well. If in those matches he got a 1.15 rating, similar to the Faze players, they probably would've still won these. All of that means that for me, the fact that Na'Vi lost the finals means s1mple doesn't deserve the MVP, especially since his performance got worse and worse throughout the tournament.

It is pointless because Zywoo, BlameF and Elige did not play such a difficult and intensive match vs Faze, which always heavily decreases a rating especially when you are on the losing side. The more competition you get, the harder it is to get a good rating, even more so when you play lots of additional maps. So the comparizon between them and s1mple is flawed thus pointless. You can only compare s1mple with other players on Navi and Faze. s1mple was far better than zywoo, elige of blamef in this tournament, it is not arguable.

It was 1.37 (highest in the tournament) before the playoffs and 1.34 (still highest in the tournament) before the grand finals. It is absolutely relevant to whether or not he is MVP lol. It is MVP of the whole tournament not the finals, people are not objective and bias because of the finals highlights. Yeah, it was absolutely deserved. It's unfortunate that the award isn't just for the grand-finals but it is what it is. s1mple still finished top of the board throughout the grand-final and carried Na'Vi to the grand-finals, though it was definitely close given how Twistzz popped off in that last map where it mattered.
