fnatic to attend IEM Dallas instead of Virtus.pro

Some of the Russian squad's players were unable to obtain visas ahead of the tournament.

Virtus.pro have withdrawn from IEM Dallas 2023 following the inability of a few of their players to obtain visas for the American event. fnatic were invited to replace the Russian core due to their fourth-place finish in the closed qualifier.

According to ESL rules, in the event of a team withdrawing from the tournament after the qualifier stage and before the replacement deadline, the next available squad from the bracket will be invited. In this case, William "mezii" Merriman and company finished in fourth place in the closed qualifier behind OG, Cloud9, and Astralis — teams already invited or qualified for the competition.

fnatic will replace Virtus.pro at the $250,000 tournament

If the team dropout occurred before the start of the closed qualifier, then the next available team from the region in the ESL World Ranking would have received the invite.

This is the second development from IEM Dallas recently announced as earlier on Wednesday it was revealed that OG was invited to the tournament instead of an unnamed participant. Iulian "regali" Harjău was also announced to be stepping in for Abdul "degster" Gasanov at the tournament due to the Russian AWPer taking time off after the Paris Major.

IEM Dallas will take place May 29 - June 4 in the Texas city of Dallas and will host 16 teams battling it out for a $250,000 prize pool and a direct invite spot to IEM Cologne 2023. The winners will also fight for a notch in the Intel Grand Slam belt as the race for the fifth season of ESL's premier prize got started with Vitality's win at IEM Rio in April.

fnatic will join the tournament alongside the likes of HEROIC, G2, and ENCE as they tackle their first LAN tournament following their elimination from the Paris Major in 9-11th place.

The list of teams attending IEM Dallas is as follows:

It's a trade off really. It definitely allows the most opportunities for t2 teams but with how many teams get included in the later stages, there's a lot of BO1s and therefore more flukes.

Well bo3 is still not a big difference tbh. I ve seen plenty of "Tier 2" teams in major winning convincingly to these big orgs. i just think the gap between Tier 1 & 2 has shrunk a lot. CSGO is way more entertaining with tier 2 showing new aggressive strats from their stratbook. Slow CS is not a thing anymore

What a delusional comment... Look at Furia who was the definition of only playing aggressively. Even they reverted to more passive play now because only aggression is predictable. Pace changes, defaults and the option to accelerate behind an opening are way more important then only having aggressive playbook options. Map control is far more important then anything nowadays because it allows you to have information and that is what usually is the deciding factor in winning a round. If you know an execute is coming before it is happening, that is insanely valuable. That does not mean aggression is bad by any means btw; it just means that there needs to be a balance between aggression and passive play because otherwise it gets predicable. Also saying a bo1 is not so much different from a bo1 really shows how little you know about veto and top tier CS. You need actual depth to be able to win a best of three against a T1 team. while in a bo1 you can easily get your comfort map and play of early momentum. In a bo3 on the other hand you may get your fav map and may even win that but if your only half as good on the others, the T1 team will just stomp you. Does that mean its impossible to win a bo3 against a better team? no but you actually need to play really well to do that. Just think about the amount of 2-0 teams at the major that failed to deliver in the bo3's.

Imagine playing for a top 5 team who is sponsored by one of the richest orgs giving the best salaries and infrastructure in whole cs scene, and still lose to 17yo eastern europeans whose all experience comes from playing FPL pugs all day in their grandmother basement. G2 had all odds stacked in their favor and they still got eliminated before playoffs by T2 players. The major isnt a joke, G2 is.

I'm not trying to defend G2 we did horribly and rn we deserve to be out called like this... But not only those who you named did bad also Heroic burnt themselves in semis and Faze also went 0-2 the first day of legends, so many "T1" teams performed badly, but in the end we just go on with our lives and with the fact that one team at one major * was the best (except Astralis in 2019 *) That's just CS works, and to be true I love it!
