Spawn changes headline new CS2 update

A slew of modifications to spawns on various maps have rolled out just days ahead of the Americas RMR.

Valve have unveiled a new update for CS2, with the most prominent tweaks coming in the form of changed spawns across a number of maps in the competitive pool. Various aspects of spawns were modified in this update, but the most notable change was the removal of a number of spawn locations on numerous maps, including Inferno, Mirage, and Overpass, on both T and CT sides.

A consequence of this change is the removal of several spawns that provided aggressive opportunities for the defense and offense. Notably, the CT side Mirage spawns closest to Middle, as well as the Overpass CT spawn that offered a fast peek into Middle have been removed. Furthermore, at least seven spawns have been removed from the T side on Mirage.

These particular changes will no doubt need to be taken into consideration by teams set to participate in the upcoming PGL Copenhagen Americas RMR, with numerous aggressive timings and instant smokes being affected by the update.

The removal of certain spawns was not the only change made in that department. Valve have also tweaked the spawns of reconnecting players, guaranteeing that players who were disconnected from a match would "respawn in the spawn point they were assigned at the beginning of the round."

Outside of the modifications made to spawns, Valve also included many bug fixes as well as some slight map changes to Inferno. In regards to the former changes, Canadian commentator Mohan "⁠launders⁠" Govindasamy highlighted potential changes to the consistency of jump height, while others noticed improved framerates, a major talking point since the release of the Call to Arms update earlier in February.

The full list of changes are as follows:

[MISC]
- Spawn position is no longer randomly determined when a player reconnects to a server during freeze time. The spawn point sequence is now configured at the beginning of the map and is saved/restored from round backup files
- In official matchmaking servers, players who disconnect and reconnect during freeze time will respawn in the spawn point they were assigned at the beginning of the round
- On community servers, players who disconnect and reconnect during freeze time will be assigned one of the five spawn positions assigned to the team that round
- When restoring from round backup files (which is recommended in tournament settings after disconnects/reconnects), players will spawn in the positions they were originally assigned at the beginning of that round
- Fixed a bug where players would see a black screen after disconnecting and reconnecting multiple times during a technical timeout
- Fixed a bug where players disconnecting and reconnecting to a competitive match would incorrectly interact with bot spawning algorithm
- Fixed some cases where MVP music would not play or would play over round end music
- Fixed a bug in Deathmatch where kills during warmup would count towards healthshot reward and Zeus score bonus
- Fixed players jumping higher than normal when toggling low framerate
- Fixed an instance of weapon switches sometimes being ignored by the server
- Fixed smoke shadow rendering issues and improvements to perf
- Fixed a bug where the game would crash on Linux while alt-tabbing
- Fixed some cases where a frame rate hitch would occur due to compiling shaders
- Improved behavior when user input does not arrive on the server in time due to packet loss or client frame rate issues
- Adjusted various music kit cues in NIGHTMODE Music Kit box (ISOxo, Knock2, and TWERL and Ekko & Sidetrack)
- Fixed a case where some players in North America would always fail to accept a match on a server in Europe due to SDR choosing an invalid route
- Players who get kicked from official competitive servers for too many suicides will now be issued a competitive cooldown
- Adjusted the logic tracking player idle state to exclude round freezetime and timeout periods
- Chickens no longer interact with dropped weapons
- Sniper scope overlay no longer appears in tool viewports (such as Hammer)

- Adjusted spawn location priorities for Premier and Competitive game modes in Anubis, Inferno, Mirage, Nuke, Overpass, and Vertigo.

[INFERNO]
- Fixed community reported gaps in map and Trike model
- Raised plywood at top of Banana to cover head visibility
- Smoothed ground movement in Banana and Bombsite A
- Raised Arch exit towards Mid (or "Raised arch in Arch")
- Removed bench at Arch near Library
- Removed construction cone at Underpass

[WORKSHOP]
- Fix lightmaps being capped at 4k resolution in CS2 Workshop Tools
- Updated sticker inspect to support wear in 0.1 increments to match sticker scraping
- Added roughness texture to foil stickers in the Item Editor
- Updated help system for new sticker features

T side has more than 5 spawns and they moved it to be up against the front wall to stop the instant window smoke. I think someone said its only possible from a few spawns still. Ts also still have the fastest mid spawn and A ramp spawn still turned on as a random option.

Random spawns added a whole different dynamic to rounds. Will you get the good Fountain spawn on overpass to go for the Pick?? The good A Long rush spawn on Anubis? This made for interesting gameplay and you had to account for the possibility's of these spawns and whether or not you might be beat to a angle or pick first. This is one of those updates NO ONE ASKED FOR!! No one complained about the spawns.... why is this being changed. Dumbing the game down. Sad.

It wouldn't work as well as in Valorant. People would run boost the second the walls are open giving them a a big headstart. If CT's were already prepared on sites That would give them a huge advantage, You probably could move the walls so that they match the normal timings but there would still be 5 terrorists with the best spawn for long for example.

Why is making the game more beginner friendly a bad thing? It's simplifying it for newer players and also more experienced so that they don't have to learn 13 different spawn-based instant window smokes. Is it really a bad thing to have less spawn randomness or is it just annoying that you can't punish a player that doesn't know the timings too well yet or that you learned 50 spawn-based smoke for nothing in the end?

do you really not see why? simplifying the game/making it noob friendly perhaps makes it more "fun" for casual players (since they get a chance to not get absolutely destroyed by better players), however it ruins the game for competitive players/pros imagine you put - let's say - over 15k hours into a game, learning pretty much everything, becoming a top player, getting a really good feel for the game, basically becoming invincible vs "noobs" - just for that to be taken away because the developers decided to make the game more noob-friendly and suddenly all that hard-work and effort is for nothing as anyone with say 2k hours can match you and outperform you on a daily basis this update is one of those which builds upon Valve's apparent idea of "simplifying" CS2, just think of an example: > best spawn on mirage T to peek window > the CT who plays window, is a new player, who does not even think of the possibility of getting peeked that fast > before the update, he would die > after the update, he is not going to die, essentially rewarding him for having LESS knowledge also #41

if you want to be invincible vs "noobs" you are not a competitive player, you're a smurf at best. I don't see the fun in overpowering opponents everytime without a fight, and at higher skill levels it's rarely the case that you'd just fully steamroll a team (especially just through the advantage of random spawns) it doesn't level the playing field between new players and more experienced players either because they don't play together in the first place. And timings are still a think you need to learn, just that now it is less random. It may take away some complexity but it rewards the players for adapting, maybe they'll need to ask for a flash mid from the A site, maybe the Ts will runboost to get top mid quicker (and good utility usage and teamwork is probably more rewarding and useful than good spawn knowledge tbh) Also, counter example or rather an example of why this update is good, in a more meaningful context: Before this update if a pro team had to reset the round they could have totally new spawns. Same thing for an individual player, it's not normal that an awper could just disconnect and reconnect and go from worst to good spawn. This is the kind of thing that could change the outcome of a map, a game, a tournament if we wanna be really farfetched. This kind of random luck or ability to re-throw the dice shouldn't be available in a competitive game like CS. I'm not opposed to some randomness but it goes further than that, it's the ability to rewrite a round from a simple restart. To me hating on making the game easier for newer player just seems like a bitter old player reaction, from someone who doesn't want other people to have it easier than he has. If a new player wants to get as good as you they will put in the work, and they will cross the threshold of learning more detailed stuff to get better, stuff you don't get from the base game but from tutorials or the community. No, no one's intentions are to be invincible vs "noobs", however if someone with 2k hours can easily compete and even beat out someone with say 12k hours, it's definitely an issue, hence why competitive players/pros suffer due to it. Just take open qualifiers as an example - why is it that full-time, salaried, pro teams keep losing vs random players on a frequent basis (excluding the ones that are cheating, of course)? Yes they do, both in open qualifiers and on FaceIT. Adapting only occurs for some time after a change is implemented - after that it becomes something standard. So what you are saying is that there wasn't good utility usage/teamwork before? It was that AND spawn knowledge, now it's just that WITHOUT spawn knowledge (hence why the game is even more noob-friendly now). I do agree with you on this one, I think the fact that they removed the OP spawns which occurred due to reconnecting is a good thing. I don't think they were ever intended by Valve in the first place, since these spawns were actually bugged. I get where you are coming from, however I highly doubt this is the case. I personally hate the fact that Valve are making these decisions and so do many others. The reason isn't that I am bitter, but I truly believe it's unfair. To prove my point, I can give you a totally random example I just thought of: Imagine you are a professional darts player, which you have been playing and practicing for over 20 years, playing in official tournaments too, being regarded as one of the best. Suddenly, the people who make the rules (in CS' case this would be Valve) decide that they are going to change the standards, firstly by making the center of the darts board (which gives the most points) twice as big (making it much easier to hit) and secondly by reducing the distance the players are throwing the darts from by 50%. Suddenly, a bunch of other players, who have been previously WAY under your level can match you, since playing darts has become much easier, essentially raising the skill floor and lowering the skill ceiling (exactly what happened when CS:GO transitioned into CS2). Now apply this to CS. Do you see why this is unfair? Do you see how this fucks over people who genuinely dedicated thousands of hours into it? Why are people who are new/put in less effort being given the opportunity to be as good as the people who have been on the scene for ages and have put in so much more work? This is not bitterness, this is just heartbreaking.
