Grayhound cease operations after Major failure

The Australian team's recent third place at the Asia RMR has proven costly.

Grayhound has announced it is ceasing operations and that its Australian lineup is looking for a new home. The news comes mere days after the squad failed to qualify for PGL Major Copenhagen after finishing in third place at the Asia RMR.

In a post on X/Twitter, the team's IGL, Christopher "dexter" Nong, stated the lineup intends to continue playing together and is hoping to find an organization in its region to represent, while highlighting the fact they have appearances at IEM Chengdu, ESL Pro League and IEM Dallas on the horizon.

Grayhound entered CS:GO in 2017 with the signing of the former Immunity roster, which featured the likes of Erdenetsogt "erkaSt" Gantulga and Sean "Gratisfaction" Kaiwai. After the signings of players like dexter and Ollie "DickStacy" Tierney, the team put itself on the map in 2019 by qualifying for the IEM Katowice Major, where they played out an extremely close Nuke game against Vitality before exiting the event with an 0-3 record.

In late 2019, Grayhound exited CS after their roster signed for Renegades, but returned in late 2022 by picking up the ORDER lineup after that organization had filed for bankruptcy. The squad went on to ensure Grayhound's name appeared at two more Majors, in Rio and in Paris, crashing out of both events in the Challengers Stage.

The ex-Grayhound lineup are:

Australia Christopher "dexter" Nong
Australia Alistair "aliStair" Johnston
Australia Jay "Liazz" Tregillgas
Australia Joshua "INS" Potter
Australia Declan "Vexite" Portelli

Mongolia Erdenetsogt "erkaSt" Gantulga

It is the end. They were by far the best team in Australia and even they cannot find org or sponsors. There is no second team that can replace them. Very sad.

They can always try to look for not AU org that might be looking into entering CS, with secured appearances and track record it might work. Org doesn't have to be local unless they want to continue playing local tournaments and as such need a local bootcamp. Of course there's a risk of becoming second 3dMax, meaning having to look for a looooong time, but still.

I think this team can pick up an org, it's easier to pitch being the biggest fish in the smallest pond of australia and it helps that they have a very high chance of reaching the major being in the asia RMR. (SHOULD be 100% but i'll write this rmr off as a freak accident.)

Nah, I'm sorry, but it's not 100%. China just becomes somewhat competitive in Asia market. And 100% in Asia rn is Mongolz, others have to fight for 1 spot, with teams like Atox, Tyloo, Lynn Vision and Rare Atom not being complete punch bags either anymore, with rumors of new rosters forming right now, either they overperform or you have a bad day and your spot is gone.

That's what happens when there is less investor money coming in to esports. The sticker sales hold even more signifigance to these teams' survival.

Iirc the org is run by some rich Aussie bloke, so yeah they kinda need the sticker money to keep it going, as #54 said. Its probs a bit rougher since 2023 had only one major, even though the sales were record high. Maybe financially not as viable as two. But yes it is hard to wrap ones head on how impactful stickers are.

Ikr? Looks like many teams don't know into diversification and just rely on sticker money to keep going. Dunno if its THAT hard to find a sponsor or locate your money in a different way or just they don't give a shit and all they want is the sticker revenue using players just as tools to achive it.

it's such an unfortunate timing, with growth of Asian CS, Australian CS may have had a chance to get better. Chinese teams are getting on quite the level and it's only a matter of time they are seen as top tier. I assume they were just in a bubble, they grew a bit too much for their own size as they were the best in the region. So maybe Australian CS can still naturally develop alongside that entire region.

That's a poor take. Look at the America's RMRs: it's a shitshow. Judging by the form right now, only coL and FURIA deserve to go through, yet they still have another three spots up for grabs. GH, Tyloo and RA are no worse than three of those teams that will be going through, nor are they worse than the likes of KOI, ECSTATIC, SAW, etc. There is literally zero justification for the current spot distribution.

i guess low-tier could imply smaller salaries, poor general performances, no history/legacy, being active in only one esport, and whatever else you can think of. "MongolZ reform as an organization-less team" "The MongolZ is a Mongolian esports organization" so, liquipedia, idk what to think about them.

Does not compute how do you expect a team to qualify for majors and then set a requirement of: "poor general performances"?

"could imply" \neq "means" and i am not sure what you are looking for with your question

semantics is your best comeback? In that case your whole requirement makes no sense. If you are not sure, perhaps read back your own comments

I hope Australians can get an org for their best representation! Its always interesting to watch them clash with teams from other corners of the world!

Very unfortunately, and renegades seized their CS operations as well.

Im not really invested in AU CS but couldn't a mix of Grayhound and Rooster get you a decent Tier1 lineup? Then get some practice in the evergrowing Asian scene and things could be okay Australia itself propably can't keep a cs scene alive but if whole of oceania mix with asia things could go uphill.

weren't GH farming stickers money consistently throughout several majors? And they disband after 1st fail in years after getting +1 spot at next Major which will take place in Asia? That is pretty braindead…
