PGL Major Copenhagen had third-highest peak viewership in CS history

PGL can now boast to have organized the three most popular events in the franchise.

The grand final of PGL Major Copenhagen, pitting Natus Vincere against FaZe, had a peak of 1,844,748 viewers, according to data firm Esports Charts's initial calculations. This puts the Danish Major as the third-most-popular tournament in Counter-Strike history, only behind PGL Major Stockholm and PGL Major Antwerp.

The figure eclipsed the BLAST Paris Major's peak of 1.53 million concurrent viewers, knocking the last CS:GO Major off the podium of the most popular Counter-Strike tournaments.

Sunday's match had a lot going for it. It featured two of the most popular organizations in esports and went to three maps—something that hadn't happened since ELEAGUE Major Boston 2018. Moreover, many big-name streamers were co-streaming the match, boosting viewership figures. The list of co-streamers for the final included many popular streamers that would not be typically associated with Counter-Strike, like Félix 'xQc' Lengyel, Marc Robert 'Caedrel' Lamont and Hans 'Forsen' Fors.

In terms of hours watched, the Copenhagen Major is only sixth on the list. This should come as no surprise considering that CS2's MR12 format makes for shorter games.

The Copenhagen Major's peak still pales in comparison with the record of over 2.74 million concurrent viewers, set during the Stockholm Major's final between Natus Vincere and G2. The Ukrainian organization was present in the three most popular CS matches of all time, having also contested the Antwerp Major's final, which had a peak of over 2.1 million viewers.

Besides Sunday's final, two other matches drew over 1 million concurrent viewers: the quarter-final between FaZe and Spirit (1,126,941) and the semi-final between G2 and Natus Vincere (1,069,582).

The final viewership figures for the Copenhagen Major's title decider will be released on Monday, the company added.

Most popular CS events of all time (peak viewership):

PGL Major Stockholm 2021 — 2,748,434 viewers
PGL Major Antwerp 2022 — 2,113,610 viewers
PGL Major Copenhagen 2024 — 1,844,747 viewers
BLAST Paris Major 2023 — 1,528,724 viewers
IEM Rio Major 2022 — 1,428,993 viewers

imagine brazil was actually a competitive region, because despite all of the viewers they can't produce talent good enough to compete at the highest level and end up fighting for the weakest region spot with oceania. mmm, yeah. it's probably because brazilians stop caring the moment their teams aren't playing just like wot happened in rio major. more people outside the arena than inside watching the game.

correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't most of the said "crowd", the next day after their last BR team lost, preferred to stay with gaules outside of the arena rather than staying inside the arena to watch the grand final unfold? I'm not trying to be a negative person, but I'm genuinely curious if that was actually indeed what happened or another case of a "cheap hltv bait".

You're wrong and i gonna correct you, Gaules was outside before Furia got eliminated, it was during one of the Mouz matches, cus they made a fanfest event outside, where Furia and Imperial players (fallen and co) were doing signing sections, so everybody was outside, then ppl cherry picked this specific match to lie about the event and say that the crowd was empty when there was no BR team playing, but as you can see from the clip i linked above it is a lie.

Well escharts rarely counts Chinese viewership because its hard to get reliable data on those streaming sites and what they count as a viewer is like weird. I just think all these issues (stream going down during Semis/Finals), same bozo audio problems, that stage rush debacle. You'd think PGL would improve but they just simply havent. Hopefully they learn a lesson (ngl I doubt it) and put on a close to perfect show.

I like your logic. I think the average casual does not know or care that the game has changed. And to reach millions of viewers, one need average casuals to watch the game.

Gaules brought a massive viewership (topping 500k on multiplat) even though he had a 2-min delay and was lagging sometimes. Not only that, since semifinals, gotv coincidentally went down a bunch of times, while in the final, it just went off after rd6 on map 2, meaning all of the 75k viewers on Gaules stream couldn't watch the game from there, having to "watch" the scoreboard. That's the most impressive thing I've saw following this game for over 20 years.
2024-04-01 01:48

Now that PGL is doing 11 events in the future, in my opinion there are too many events. It should be the case that all top teams should be represented and compete in every Tier 1 event. Now the teams can more or less choose which event they attend and can tactically avoid each other. Surely that’s not what we as viewers want? In addition, the teams hardly have any time left to prepare for events and think about new tactics etc., considering that the teams also need travel time in order to be able to take part. In addition, the hype and anticipation for matches is lost. I would think it would be much better if valve controlled everything and there is only 1 Tier 1 event per month in which all the top teams compete. This means that the anticipation of wanting to watch the games always remains and teams have enough time to prepare.

There will be 4-5 Elite events per year with all top teams - 2 majors, Katowice, Cologne, Blast Year Final. As for teams picking events - that's already happening with US and China events being skipped by few top teams. In general many events are good for orgs and health of scene in general. Some T2/T3 teams will have a chance to get LAN experience which at the moment is almost exclusive for partner teams.
