G2 make EPL playoffs after thriller revenge series against M80

The second meeting between the two teams in Malta was just as exciting as the first.

NiKo's disastrous start to Ancient faded away when he came alive in overtime

G2 have squeaked through to the playoffs of ESL Pro League Season 19 with a revenge victory over M80 in the Group B Last Chance Stage, winning one of the best maps we've seen all year, a 22-20 triple overtime on Ancient, before converting an Inferno whose 13-6 scoreline doesn't do justice to the knife's edge that the game balanced on.

M80 had cast G2 down to the Last Chance Stage earlier in the tournament after pulling off an immense upset in the lower bracket. In that series, M80 had demolished Rasmus "HooXi" Nielsen's side on Ancient, but squandered a handful of series points on Inferno and nearly did the same on the Vertigo decider before clinching victory.

"Straight up embarrassing how we play," HooXi said on X after the game.

G2 to face Falcons in elimination match after M80 upset

M80 could not convert two series points against BetBoom in the lower bracket final and missed out on an early shot at the playoffs, but fought past TYLOO to set up a rematch against a G2 who had just made it past Falcons in the Last Chance Stage to reach the last possible match of Group B.

"It's been a long week, one of the longest weeks in my career," Nikola "NiKo" Kovač said on the post-game broadcast, making it clear just how much the gauntlet of games had exhausted him.

That fatigue, and struggles for NiKo particularly, were on clear display at the start of Ancient: The Bosnian rifler ended up in disadvantageous duels repeatedly, missed timings by the slimmest of margins, was a headshot magnet for M80, and in times where he would typically be good for a multi-kill, he could only deal damage or at max, grab a single frag.

Around him, however, a thrilling game unfolded, with Nicolai "device" Reedtz joining the casting panel to share some insight into strategies while genuinely enjoying the action, making quips and jokes as the game went along.

Initially, it was M80 who jumped ahead, courtesy of Mario "malbsMd" Samayoa finding key impact in Middle and racking up early multi-kills.

That momentum faded away when a squandered 5vs3 allowed G2 an avenue back into the game, and the European team, emboldened by a Nemanja "huNter-" Kovač that looked more like the one of old, closed the gap as the game came down to the wire, highlights popping up seemingly every round.

Another absurd round from malbsMd was followed by a late-round recovery from Ilya "m0NESY" Osipov and Nemanja "nexa" Isaković, and the teams continued trading blows all the way into double overtime.

NiKo, whose woes had continued up until this point, sat upon an 11-25 K-D, had zero multi-kills, and was 2-6 in openers, but completely came alive at this point to pull G2 back from the brink of defeat.

The 27-year-old's entries on B enabled G2 to regain the lead and claim map point, but a squandered post-plant by G2, dubbed a "huge throw" by device on broadcast, and a quad kill by Elias "s1n" Stein allowed M80 to force another set of extra rounds.

NiKo's monumental recovery was in full-swing at this point, however, with the Bosnian rifler almost tallying back-to-back ace rounds to single-handedly haul his team to the finish line.

Robbed of their map pick, M80 went into Inferno facing an uphill climb, especially after they failed to beat G2 on it in their previous meeting.

Force-buy wars kicked off as M80 came oh-so-close to stealing a handful of early rounds away from G2, but a late stabilization from s1n's side kept the score at even-keel heading into the second half.

The back-breaker came in the second half when, after losing the pistol round, M80 got themselves into an advantageous post-plant on B with a force-buy, but fumbled a 1vs2 to huNter-'s smoke defuse.

Two more close rounds went the way of G2, ensuring the wind was out of [t,m80's sails, and insult to injury was added with another ace by NiKo before G2 closed out the game, 13-6, to lock in their spot in the playoffs.

No need. M80 showed some good games against EU teams. Would have liked to see them go further but They should be proud of their performance.

+1 They had s1n as their IGL for two weeks only. Their ceiling should be pretty high with this roster.

NT M80 lots of potential given they only had a 2 week bootcamp with S1n. If they stick together come 2025 they will become tier 1 and maybe win some events

>only two week bootcamp with s1n I think this says alot about the current state of iteration of G2... lost to a newly formed team that only just recently got together properly in round 1, and on round 2, still struggled and required NiKo to finally play to get over the line.

It does say alot but also says more about M80. In this event they proved that they are not just onliners and can preform on LAN all they need is more experience and time and all the losses they took here would be all wins.

Uh, maybe G2 is tired because of playing nonstop? They're in burnout because of Chengdu, doesn't surprise me, they did have few days to rest well and bootcamp again.

m8, this has been going on for a long while now. They only manage to get over the line mainly because of m0NESY 1v9ing.

but even m0NESY lately didn't have good games, dude, they are just in a burnout. Also HooXi haves a system all around m0NESY, if you want a proof, G2 literally plays Vertigo because that's one of m0NESY best maps, even tho that is one of NiKo's worse maps

Didn't m0NESY make a comment earlier today on the couch about wanting to play more games as opposed to less? It might've been a sarcastic comment though and went over my head. idk

Might be sarcastic, because G2 is on the same position as FaZe, yes, FaZe are winning more games but they are in burnout with absolutely no rest, same with G2

this format is so bad, like just lose 10 games, play the same team millions times, and you still have a chance to qualify for play off

+1 Tournament is too long too, the worst format. Clown 2 doesn't deserve the play off, they should've been in the airport by now.

What are you even talking about? It reduces the luck involved in making it to the playoffs. It's literally one of the most competitive setups and tournament can have. If you aren't consistent enough as a team, you just won't make it. If you like underdogs having big upsets and making it all the way, then I guess this isn't the format for you.

what are you talking about? I can call the same thing that g2 was more lucky to win against m80. m80 and g2 have 1-1 in terms of winning series, only differense is that last series was elimination one

More lucky? Dude, I get it, M80 is a good team but is also their fault for losing to BetBoom xd If you beat a team once, is not guaranteed 100% you will win against same team twice. Here G2 just played better and keep their mental strong unlike the game before

g2 was better last time but I think a team that has more firepower have a better chance to beat the same team when they meet second time in a tourney. There are no more surprise strats that you prepared before and stuff

G2 is on the same state as FaZe, they are in burnout, doesn't surprise me they lost to M80 and MongolZ, they've been playing nonstop. Is actually a miracle that even tho of playing with absolutely no rest they still did make playoffs.

If M80 was definitively the better team, they would've won the second time. Period. You're just complaining about the fact M80 was not good enough to repeat their successes. This format exposes teams that can't keep it together and stay consistent. The two teams that made it out of the last chance so far are VP and G2. Both of them have been in playoffs contention for the tournaments they've competed in. In this event, they both got upset by underdog teams and then went on to eliminate those teams in a rematch and go on to qualify to playoffs. They are simply the more consistent teams over the underdogs. Ironically enough, the only true "fluke" team so far is 3DMAX and they were a team that made it all the way to the upper finals. It shows how much of a mixed bag group stages can be.

impossible, G2 are heavy freestylers, with 0 structure, as XTQZZZ called them - momentum driven team, like surfers waiting for a perfect wave which rarely shows up.

If they keep going like this they wont be winning anything. I think FaZe is like that aswell but for them it works because they have pretty much the best players in every role. But with someone like nexa in your lineup this wont work
