G2 edge out 9z to reach first grand final in CS2

G2's impressive run with Stewie2K continues as they edged out a competitive 9z side in the semi-finals.

NiKo made Inferno go G2's way with three multi-kills in the final three rounds

G2 have made it to the grand final at IEM Dallas after passing 9z 2-0 in a chaotic semi-final series. On Sunday, they will go up against Vitality for a chance to grab the title and the $100,000 first-place prize, as well as a notch towards the Intel Grand Slam.

With the victory, G2 secure their first grand final appearance in Counter-Strike 2 and will get a chance to win their first trophy since their last title decider at IEM Cologne 2023.

As usual, they relied on their individuals to pass a 9z side that looked surprisingly composed for their first appearance in a big arena. The Latin American squad put on an impressive show on Inferno and only came up short due to NiKo's superb effort in the final stages of the second half.

The Bosnian star put up a game-equalizing quad-kill and went on to close G2's map pick with a 1v1 clutch and a triple spraydown in the last three rounds.

9z headed into Dust2 with confidence after they had racked up a 10-0 streak on it, including a win over Vitality, and looked to equalize the game after getting off to a great start on the Terrorist side. Clutches from Antonio "MartinezSa" Martinez and Matias "HUASOPEEK" Ibañez Hernandez helped prevent G2 from getting consecutive rounds and secured 9z a 6-2 lead.

The favorites broke the rut with a 2v2 A retake as they took advantage of an overeager 9z duo's misguided peeks, and from there the momentum shifted. A halfbuy win from 9z in round four of the second half gave the underdogs some respite, but G2 quickly returned to winning ways to lock down the second map 13-8.

"Super happy, I could never have imagined we would have gone all the way to the final," NiKo commented on the stage after the match. "The game was not pretty, not clean from both sides, but it was fucking exciting."

9z is going to get better too. They have a solid roster as is, so if they can become more consistent like their earlier performances at IEM Dallas, the sky is the limit. I'd like to see more teams from the Americas region (North + South + Canada) qualify for events / get invited more frequently. This is reminding me of the old days when SA and NA had some crazy teams back in CS 1.6 :]

I really hope they do. They proved the world they can go against the better teams. I think they sometimes lack results locally because of the lack of motivation and maybe the unpredictabilty of the teams they face. Now with these results I'm sure they'll be even more hungry of results. Hope they get some cool invites where they can cement some nice results and gain consistency. Also they're now moving to Spain so we'll see how it pays off :)

If teams from South America take their local scene as seriously as FURIA did initially, then I think their organization will be willing to relocate them to Europe so that they can consistently practice against the best of the best. I've been dying to see some North and South American teams put up a good fight, and Liquid has been disappointing to say the least. Complexity is also streaky. Back to the main point - 9z. That's news to me that they're moving to Spain - definitely a step in the right direction. Hoping nothing but the best for them. The CS2 pro scene needs to see some teams from the Americas region!

We won't know until we see them play more regularly, so I wouldn't count them out just yet.

While I agree with your point, using the term "America's" and then splitting it "North + South + CANADA" is WILD roflmao which North is Canada in? North North? North Pole?

North America - and I specified Canada because people often get confused. Yeah, I shouldn't have split it "North + South + Canada", but I honestly tried to account for the fact that people will argue that Canada isn't part of NA.

Yeah, it's great to see them perform well It's not the last we see of them in international LAN, that's for sure. Also, I remember when 9z knocked out Vitality once upon a time ago. They basically ended RpK's career. He retired short after that

Yup, it was in 2021 during a BLAST Showdown and with a stand in. That time it was try's show, when he was only 16 y/o, so they're technically 2-0 vs Vitality :D

There is always next time. Placing 3rd-4th is no easy feat and I think 9z proved that they have room to grow. They're a good representation of what South America has to offer.

Right on! Kudos to 9z for defeating some of the world's current best teams. If they can keep up the hard work, they will consistently make deep runs like this in future events.

Aint gonna lie im shipping Stewie in G2 atm this vibe is crazy in the coms exactly what G2 needs a cool calm voice when needed and heated when it matters.. This energy that G2 got atm is what they need. Giga Hooxi is great and i would love to see him continue in G2 but give Stewie a chance for a couple tournaments and then go back too hooxi if it doesnt work out.
