G2 complete miracle run with Stewie2K to win IEM Dallas

G2 have won their first CS2 title playing without in-game leader HooXi.

Stewie2K lifts the trophy to the delight of his home crowd

G2 lifted the IEM Dallas trophy after a spectacular three-map final against Vitality (Inferno 19-16, Anubis 13-16, Nuke 13-8) to win their first trophy of 2024.

G2 entered the tournament with Jake "Stewie2K" Yip in place of Rasmus "HooXi" Nielsen and were thus the home-crowd favorites, but no one could predict the run they went on. Their playoff run included wins against FaZe and the red-hot 9z, and their grand final victory against Vitality was seemingly written in the stars.

Nikola "NiKo" Kovač, who won his first tournament since IEM Cologne 2023, couldn't hide his happiness after the win. "I'm speechless, this has been one of the most intense games of the season. I don't think you could have a better storyline than Stewie2k had here. We won somehow, no one knows how, but we did it," the Bosnian said.

Ilya "m0NESY" Osipov, who claimed the MVP award after a 1.61-rated performance in the final, was asked about his feelings on besting Mathieu "ZywOo" Herbaut. "I don't care about who I play against. We just how a fucking IEM Dallas, it's crazy. This guy is mythical, he is an absolute fucking beast," he said while pointing at Stewie2K.

m0NESY was on fire in the grand final

G2 picked Inferno in the series and we were treated to an exhilarating display of chaos and individual brilliance. Proceedings got underway with m0NESY getting a 4k in the pistol, and G2 stayed in the game throughout the first half before eventually closing out a 7-5 scoreline after Stewie2K won a 1vs2 in the final round.

Vitality returned to the lead and were agonizingly close to victory at 11-8, with G2's only CT round coming after m0NESY's 1vs1 clutch against ZywOo. Nemanja "huNter-" Kovač then stopped the rot with a well-timed smoke push that secured him bomb control, but neither team could close out the map in regulation.

We then needed three action-packed OTs to find the winner, as G2's IEM Dallas magic continued and helped them secure a 19-16 victory. m0NESY, NiKo, and huNter- all had a plethora of brilliant plays across the half and helped overcome Vitality, who only had ZywOo and William "mezii" Merriman firing on all cylinders.

Anubis began as Inferno ended, as m0NESY found three kills on the hero AK-47 in the second round to get his team their first. A back-and-forth ensued, and G2 clearly had a game plan to abuse Shahar "flameZ" Shushan's A hold, and the Israeli rifler had a lot of difficulty hanging onto the site. mezii then delivered an incredible ace on the other site and helped switch the momentum, and Vitality took a two-round lead.

Vitality won five rounds in a row to start their offense and got seven map points, but couldn't convert any of them as G2's plot armor meant we were in for another overtime. In classic Counter-Strike fashion, Vitality got a round as soon as we entered overtime with the help of ZywOo's triple, which gave his team enough confidence to force out the decider after a 16-13 victory.

The Nuke decider began with a huNter--powered start for G2, but mezii soon bettered the Bosnian's impact with a 1vs3 to get Vitality on the board. Disruptive pushes by the Vitality CT side got them a six-round streak, only for an upper rush to break their streak. m0NESY then outplayed ZywOo in a 1vs1, and the half-time score was once again tied up.

The second half began with a 3vs3 retake of the upper site for G2, and the crowd willed the European combine to take an 11-6 lead. Dan "apEX" Madesclaire then turned into Vitality's shining lift, getting a crucial triple entry and a 1vs2 to keep his team in the game. He was then thrown into another clutch but was unable to win it, which spelled the end for Vitality's hopes, as G2 closed out the map and lifted the IEM Dallas trophy after a tournament run for the ages.

“Effortlessly” hltv.org/stats/players/matches/8797/stew.. Any washed NA player like Stewie would somehow win trophy by getting carried by m0NESY and in top form Niko. hltv.org/stats/players/matches/8797/stew.. hltv.org/stats/players/8797/stewie2k?eve.. He was 3rd worst rated player in playoffs after karrigan and nexa lmao.

See but true carrying doesn't really happen in the pro scene outside of looking at stats. Niko would've tilted off the face off the earth leading this team if he didn't have Stew cool as a cucumber keeping them all chill. Nexa is the real problem child of the team, even with a standin. But that didn't stop even nexa from having extremely impactful plays. The numbers don't mean a whole lot in the moment in the server. Your mental means way more.

Any decent +3k elo faceit player with 2 weeks of practise with G2 would do the job instead of Stewie that his my opinion no one will change, he isn’t anything special. Maybe the crowd cheering for stewie helped a bit, but G2 would be crowd favourite in most matches anyway no matter the stewie, since NA fans love G2. Nexa has been problem the moment he replaced jks, but “niko and frens 2.0” is more powerful than reason…..

It's not about the crowd liking stewie my brother, he as a good chemistry with the players and seemingly shifted G2's entire vibe to having fun, rather than the usual desk-slamming. Your "opinion" don't mean shit, the results are there, and the players that did the winning all praised him. Our boys will win the next one, I promise. Find healthier ways to cope.

What did I say in that comment that was not fact except dogging on your opinion and saying faze will win next? They were in better spirits, they WON the tournament, all of the players DID praise him on MULTIPLE occasions, and they clearly had chemistry. Those 4 things are straight up facts my brother. Since when were Americans smarter than Europeans? Lmao, nice comment change. Your instragram bio (lol delusional) wasn't a good comment, glad you edited it. The fact you still yapping about that mf rating and carrying shows your purposely ignoring the important nuance of the mental aspect of this game.

Lmao bro threw all the nades on Nuke and still ran infront of everyone and was the entry. People dont realize what roles are or what enabling your best players is. It's how you win trophies xD.

G2 has always had a problem with tilting, they said (maybe jokingly) they were bringing nexa in for the 'vibes' but I don't think he does much to impact the team mood, stewie unironically did help with keeping the hype up. Hooxi has been trying to be the hypeman if you compare his early games to now but stewie is a natural hypeman. Even without the crowd buff he did his part in keeping the team level-headed and helping them win. It's something they have been struggling with since the departure of JACKZ who was originally the team hypeman.

XDDD, you are so funny bro. Just check your faze ratings on last match with G2 XDD. (All guys below 0.72 rating on both maps). Better switch your favourite team. I’m not a big fan of g2, but they played very good games in Dallas. Stew and rest deserve a trophy.

I mean it feels a bit better that Faze lost to eventual champions yet again, but I just hope this fluke victory doesn’t switch Niko to IGL just like in Faze when they went 0-2 down in London Major 2018 with karrigan IGLing and when Niko took over in 0-2 pool they miraculously managed to qualified for playoffs by reverse sweep 3-2. Based on this one miraculously turn around Faze believed Niko can actually IGL and benched karrigan which led into……. well we all know what….. 3 agonising years of Faze being turned into clown fiesta and Niko wasting his talent, which ended with Niko jumping the boat to join his cousin in G2 and Faze begging karrigan to come back.

Faze getting humbled in this fashion with a stand-in and Niko as an igl feels soo satisfying. But sure it was a fluke, so it does not matter, right? I hope they learned a valuable lesson from this experience with Stewie. Their comms might have improved throughout the iem dallas, as casters mentioned during the final on Anubis. Hopefully that will help Hooxi and the rest if the squad make their communication less chaotic in tense moments.

I don’t get these 10IQ laughs over RL. I don’t care about RL nor I am his fan he has said stupid stuff in the past multiple times, but I really don’t get this one. He mocked him for his words towards CS and his trash attitude towards other pro players which was confirmed as truth by others. He also mocked him for trying to be IGL and that he doesn’t have what it takes (which was still refering to IGL role) and guess what? He wasn’t the freaking IGL instead of Hooxi, Niko was the IGL and stewie was just entering on T-side and anchoring on CT-side literally nothing else….. so RL wasn’t wrong. Plus it doesn’t matter stewie2k is washed anyway and literally any +3k elo faceit player would do the same for G2 this event for 1/3 of the salary stewie most likely got.

RL also mocked Stew's stats as a stand-in for Legacy, when they weren't all that bad for someone who hasn't played in forever. I do agree with him that Hooxi isn't the problem though. G2's problem is very obviously nexa.

G2 without main AWP (amanek) before they signed m0nesy was still relevant top 3 team even when s1mple was in his prime and when NAVI won everything.

So funny I called this before this entire event, I said that G2 was going to realize they are better off without Hooxi. They better follow through with getting rid of hooxi

Witnessed this greatness with my own two eyes in person. Every match, every map, every round, every drag, every second. No words can describe the magic that was in Dallas this weekend. Love to G-Stew!!

yeah but thats because they were in team with stewie, i doubt they would chant monesy and niko if stewie was with vitality lol (not saying it's bad but saying they root for g2 because they root for g2 i believe it's not right when they have their national man playing with them)

After anubis I went to sleep. Waking up and seeing this news just made my day :D Really happy for all members of g2. M0nesy getting a mvp to really show how he's one of the best players this year, Hunter showing he still has it, Nexa gets his first ever lan trophy, Niko showing better consistenc (and some good igling too). Of course, Stewie show's why he's the HERO OF NA.

I mean in the short run it would make G2 a top 1 team. But after a month or 2 everyone would read the easy strats NiKo uses and they would be destroyed by utility constantly.

I don't think it would. They got lucky because Vitality eliminated Spirit, otherwise they would have been destroyed by donk.

Good game to watch. Didn't care whichever team won. The crowd bias due an American and hunter trying to crowd cheat was a sour moment. But overall great final. Power of having 1 native in your lineup on a stage tho.. can't argue it. Didn't work for karrigan but sure as hell worked in Texas.

this is just insane! i love such storys but i have to say sometimes g2 played like "faceit" and they had also a lot luck and for sure they had the backup from the home crowd. But they deserved it...they beat faze, mouz and vitality. Stewie must felt just like in Boston ^^ GGs

Undeniably deserved! Thus, congrats G2 and to Niko for finnaly being able to come out of your comfort zone although, being a pro player, that should have happen long time ago. Regarding Jake, he did fit the role but, tbh, overcoming Hooxi is not that hard for any average player. What turn me down is to observe that you are no longer a child. You are a 26 years old man and, that stage interview where you didn't drop a "thank you" word to the org that have given you the chance of lifting another IEM trophy, is disheartening and a confirmation that, it takes a lot more to be a grown up man... It's sad but, you should know better! Congrats for the win, truly deserved.

can't say they deserved it, also was rooting for vita (no correlation here) but ggwp. the series itself kept you on edge, good entertainment for sure

Stewie throws all the smokes outside on Nuke, goes full speed into lobby and goes in first through hut. I'm confused how people think him having a low rating means he's trash lmao. Know why monesy and niko played so well? They were enabled by the team + just being insane to begin with.

people don't know CS sadly and this applies to RL especially who keeps outing himself as narrative driven was Stewie's rating good? no was it acceptable even for a player playing in tier 1 and winning events? no but guess what, this was his first and last rodeo because he's a stand-in, and while he absolutely didn't bring any firepower, he helped them A LOT with comms, gave NiKo a few ideas and most importantly positioned himself to be traded properly unlike HooXi who notoriously has an issue with spacing on T side and NiKo, as a result, stopped playing JACKZ roles and actually got to run the game at his own tempo which doubled his impact instantly
