G2 secure IEM Cologne berth with Dallas victory

The European squad have booked themselves a spot in IEM Cologne 2024's main stage.

G2 will have the chance to defend their IEM Cologne title

G2 have qualified for IEM Cologne 2024's main event thanks to their trophy-winning campaign at IEM Dallas, where the European squad stormed to the title with stand-in Jake "Stewie2K" Yip among their ranks.

The $1,000,000 tournament is set to take place August 7-18 and will feature 24 teams. Sixteen will start in the Play-In stage, while eight will earn direct entry into the main stage.

The qualified quartet will be joined by four teams determined by ESL's world ranking and by the top eight sides of the Play-In.

G2 will arrive in Cologne as the defending champions, having secured 2023's edition as part of their historic capturing of both the Katowice and Cologne trophies, when Justin "jks" Savage was still on the roster. The title in Dallas was their first since bringing Nemanja "nexa" Isaković back into the team.

With NiKo getting comfortable on the IGL role I can see great synergy between the two. He can help with mid-rounds and CT calling because G2's CT side was a brick wall in Dallas. I love the story of stew but let's be real he was a non-factor in this one.

I don't think so. NiKo didn't take the IGL role if Hooxi was there, and damn what calls he made. Stewie played decent if you look at how much he practiced. More reliable in some moments than Hooxi + on home soil, team needed to step up in performance which they are capable of. Overall extra motivation and like you said, a new synergy. So how can he be a non-factor?

Stew did about as good as hooxi would in that role. And there were a lot of rounds where his shaky aim threw the advantage. Hooxi isn't a great aimer but he will take the kill that is put in front of him. The event was won by m0nesy and NiKo and couple of clucthes from nexa even tho he was abysmal this event.

Indeed, nexa disappeared. I'd be more scared about how he performed being part of the roster indefinitely. Still, the formula if you'd give up Hooxi IGL for NiKo IGL + stewie as a support player worked out well as a first event. In the end, he was only a stand-in. Props for winning the whole event and only losing 1 match with someone with a shaky aim ;)

Stew hasn't played tier 1 in 2-3 years and ended up with a rating higher than Nexxa in the final. I actually think G2 need to put Niko as IGL after this event, I was totally against it in the past but after this performance why not? Think about any player you could replace Hooxi with and the firepower this team would have?

the comminity opinion about nikos igl skills was only this bad, despite him winning some tournaments, because he was always compared to karrigan. Now when he actually got more matured and his star player looks up to him it would make a perfect sense for g2 to just put hooxi on coach/assistant coach and get fragging entry.

why should hooxi even do that. if they can win with stew and nexa they can win with hooxi any day, replace those if u wann have more firepower instead of giving away the architect behind the tactics

gg, stand-in buff is real i feel like G2 was just on the edge of needing another lineup change, this win will probably give them false confidence in this roster again, but maybe they got reignited now... we will see i mean without m0nesy absolutely HARDCARRYING G2 they wouldnt even be in playoffs... hooxi hasnt played as bad individually as stewie did in this event all year so far either, this was a magical run but in the end definitely deserved, that final was awesome

Let’s pretend they wouldn’t have been there without the tourney win while it’s clear they would’ve been anyway.

Still weird that you don't get a spot by qualifying. (I know NaVi will get a spot due to ranking but still)
