Hall of Fame: Unveiling 12 nominees for 2024

These twelve players made the cut and were up for vote for Hall of Fame induction.

The HLTV Hall of Fame by 1xBet will announce the first four members soon, with the official induction following at the HLTV Awards on January 11, 2025.

But first, we wish to honor all 12 players who have earned nominations this year.

Hall of Fame 2024 nominees are:

Brazil Raphael "cogu" Camargo

Brazilian CS, as we know it, would be drastically different if it weren't for cogu, one of the finest AWPers of the 2000s. He helped MIBR win two CPL titles and an ESWC crown and inspired a new generation of players, including Gabriel "FalleN" Toledo.

Germany Antonio "cyx" Daniloski

The German was one of the most promising 1.6 players in Europe and helped turn MOUZ into a global force in the game. He tragically lost his life in 2010 in a car accident while returning home from Frankfurt Airport after missing his flight to Shanghai, where he was due to compete in the IEM5 Global Challenge.

France Kenny "kennyS" Schrub

Renowned for his lightning-fast reflexes and aggressive playstyle, kennyS's 'Magic Stick' was a regular feature in frag movies that made people fall in love with the game. His dominance with the sniper played a big part in Valve's nerf of the weapon, but the Frenchman stayed at the top of the game for a long time after that.

Korea Keun-Chul "solo" Kang

There was a before and after solo for Asian CS. He helped put South Korea on the map in 2005 when he inspired project_kr to a runner-up finish at WEG Season 3. His skillset was on par with the world's best, and his dedication and talent were rewarded in 2010, when his WeMade FOX team won WEM.

Sweden Emil "HeatoN" Christensen

The first global CS superstar, HeatoN turned spraying into an art form and helped CS to new levels of popularity as part of NIP and SK Gaming. His eco ace against 4Kings at CPL Winter 2001 remains one of the most popular plays in the franchise.

Sweden Tommy "Potti" Ingemarsson

His name may not be as recognized as HeatoN's, but he was just as important to the rise of Swedish CS as his countryman and teammate. He was consistently one of the best players in the first half of the 2000s and remained a formidable closer of rounds until his retirement in 2006.

Sweden Patrik "f0rest" Lindberg

With a career spanning both Counter-Strike 1.6 and CS:GO, f0rest was a force to be reckoned with for nearly two decades. His crowning achievement was being a part of the historic NIP lineup that achieved an unparalleled 87-0 undefeated streak during CS:GO's early years.

Sweden Christopher "GeT_RiGhT" Alesund

Another member of the legendary NIP 87-0 roster and two-time player of the year, GeT_RiGhT reinvented the lurking role in modern Counter-Strike and left an everlasting mark on how the game is played today.

Sweden Olof "olofmeister" Kajbjer

olofmeister was the driving force behind fnatic's dominant run in 2015, the year he was crowned HLTV's best player in the world. He is also the first player to be immortalized with an in-game graffiti on Overpass after he defused the bomb while being on fire from a Molotov in the semi-finals of ESL One Cologne 2014.

Ukraine Yegor "markeloff" Markelov

The Ukrainian achieved superstar status as part of the NAVI squad that established an era in 2010. A hyper-aggressive AWPer, markeloff helped to revolutionize the role, and he is still regarded as one of the best snipers in the history of the franchise. He was named the best player in the world in 2010 and ranked third the following year.

United States Kyle "Ksharp" Miller

The first true North American star thanks to his flashy AWP and quick reflexes, Ksharp played a key role as X3 and Team 3D were consistently at the top during the franchise's early days, winning back-to-back WCG gold medals, one WCG silver and two CPL titles.

United States Danny "fRoD" Montaner

fRoD picked up where Ksharp left off and became the beacon for North American AWPers. His dominant performance in Complexity's victory at ESWC 2005 established him as one of the finest players in the world, and he remained an elite-level competitor for several years, even after returning from the CGS.

These nominees were proposed and then voted on by the Hall of Fame Committee. Each committee member voted for five candidates, ranking them from first to fifth and giving them from five to one point, respectively. After tallying the votes, four players were significantly ahead of the rest. These inductees will be revealed ahead of the HLTV Awards, but the official induction will happen at the gala ceremony in Belgrade.

Reminder: only those who are not actively competing can be nominated and voted for the Hall of Fame. Read the full process and criteria lower in the article.

As a side note, in the future, HLTV will inform the community about the Hall of Fame process in real-time. Due to time constraints, that wasn't possible for this initial year.

Introducing HLTV Hall of Fame

The voting was done by the Hall of Fame 2024 Committee, ten people who have committed their lives to playing, writing about, or working in Counter-Strike. The Committee was selected to provide coverage of different aspects of competitive Counter-Strike, as well as regions where it is played.

Hall of Fame 2024 Committee:

Australia Chad "SPUNJ" Burchill (Player/Talent, Oceania)
India Sudhen "Bleh" Wahengbam (Talent, Asia)
United States Trevor "gfmidway" Schmidt (Industry, North America)
United States Jason "Jason Lake" Lake (Industry, North America)
United States Jason "moses" O'Toole (Player/Talent, North America)
Canada Stephanie "missharvey" Harvey (Player/Talent, North America)
Brazil Roque "roque_mn" Marques (Journalist, South America)
Spain Lucas "LucasAM" Aznar Miles (Journalist, Europe)
Denmark Per "Nomad" Lambæk (Industry, Europe)
Portugal Luis "MIRAA" Mira (Journalist, Europe)

In addition to the Committee, the Hall of Fame has a Board that does not participate in the voting, but creates the framework and oversees the project. The Hall of Fame Board consists of two HLTV members, Head of Operations Zvonimir Burazin and CEO Martin Rosenbaek, as well as one member from our founding partner 1xBet, their Chief Gaming Officer.

Below you can find the details of the HLTV Hall of Fame by 1xBet. As always, we are open to feedback and will be listening to the community discorse to continuously improve this initiative.

Hall of Fame purpose, prerequisite, criteria

Purpose

The purpose of the HLTV Hall of Fame by 1xBet is to celebrate excellence, honor exceptional contributions, and recognize the historical significance in the field of competitive Counter-Strike.

Prerequisite

Only those who are no longer actively competing are eligible to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Active players and coaches are not eligible for induction.

Note: In our initial approach to the Hall of Fame, we decided to treat one's playing and coaching career as one competitive career. This means players such as Filip "NEO" Kubski were not eligible for induction in the 2024 as they were considered active competitors.

Criteria

These are the elements on which a nominee will be judged:

- Achievements: Significant competitive accomplishments or contributions.
- Impact: Having a positive effect, particularly one lasting after the person's active career ends.
- Longevity: Consistency and length of time spent achieving excellence.

Hall of Fame Process

1. Pitching: Every Committee member will anonymously submit up to five names they think deserve to be inducted to the Hall of Fame and provide 1-2 paragraph long reasoning.

2. Reviewing: Hall of Fame Board will filter the submissions by removing duplicates, those that don't pass the prerequisite, or don't score highly on the criteria. Then, the 10 best candidates will be selected based on the number of nominations. The board reserves the right to add one candidate to the voting in case they deem a worthy candidate has been skipped by the committee.

Note: Due to the high amount of notable players, the Board selected 12 best candidates for the 2024 voting instead of 10. No candidates were added outside of those nominated by the Committee.

3. Voting: The Committee will receive the list of candidates and pick their #1, #2, #3, #4, and #5, giving them 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 point respectively.

4. Results: The Committee votes will be tallied, and the top-ranked nominees will be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

They could have a community vote as well for a predefined list like this and do a separate `trophy` for that, so they would have the Hall of Famer chosen by the HLTV `specialists` lol and there would be something from the community as well, unironically this way it could work

HLTV Hall of fame is super cool but considering a career of player and coach together is kind of ridiculous. A person should be inducted as a player or a coach not both. Olof, who is nominated (probably wont make it but still could), could theoretically start coaching whenever he chooses too. Who are we to say that in 5 years he comes back to coach when he might already be in the HOF. (also side note Olof is benched on FaZe still, its been 2 years but where do we draw that line?) Whether he does or not doesn't change the fact that for any star that retires and is put on these ballots over the coming years like a s1mple, ZywOo, who could very well go on to coach is very likely to at some point cause a discrepancy where they are in the HOF but also "active" by its definition. For a player/coach like zonic as well this feels a little unfair. Zonic as a player might make the HOF one day (low odds but he was impactful in 1.6), however Zonic the coach is a first ballot HOF. If NEO goes on to be a zonic level coach all time (it wont happen but still), getting only one spot in the HOF for 2 HOF worthy careers also feels like a robbery. TLDR: having career be player/coach for inductions is dumb, people can come back to coach literally whenever they want. Seperate it, let people get 2 inductions if they really deserve it for both careers.

One could make the argument that a player retiring and then coming back from a lengthy retirement is two separate careers in the same way that you can argue that a career as a player and a career as a coach are separate because of the differing role. Similarly, we've seen multiple players retire as a player and then return again as a player, especially where VALORANT has been involved (e.g. nitr0, GuardiaN), so that can still happen even if you split playing and coaching careers. Personally, I'd also prefer splitting playing and coaching careers, as I view them as totally different skillsets that should be recognised separately, but that hardly makes hltv's choice "ridiculous" or "dumb."

Markeloff should not be ahead of GTR or f0rest. His big year was immediately after their first big year, and f0rest specifically was already a huge name for fnatic years before Navi showed up.

Cogu is literally the most overrated player in the history of cs. Watching his awp POVs made my eyes bleed. Hope either cyx or fRoD take the trophy, but markeloff was probably more impactful. Btw, I wonder who Jason Lake is gonna vote for lmao.

I played since 1.5 , my appreciation leans more towards markeloff kennyS and actually skilled players, but his cultural impact is undeniable (I'm not saying he wasn't skilled, but the more the game developed with the years the players became smarter and better ... lvl4 faceit players of today can beat top 1.3 and 1.5 teams skillwise)

I played since 1.5 I'm 34 years old, trust me I know a thing or two. Those guys played in a way less competitive and skilled scene compared to what markeloff kennyS f0rest GeT_RiGhT and cogu faced, and that's a fact. also when it comes to cultural impact they had less impact than the players mentioned above. even SpawN had more cultural impact than Potti. HeatoN is the only one who deserves the HoF spot out of the 1.3-1.5 guys

Doesn't matter if you were there or not, you don't know what you are talking about... Your knowledge clearly comes from fragmovies lol. cogu wishes he was fRoD. KSharp had massive cultural impact, especially in NA. No shit it wasn't as competitive, the game was young - it doesn't matter, the whole fucking point of HoF is to honor those who came before. I could understand disregarding the "lesser" great players of that era like ahl or even XeqtR and maybe elemeNt but those three were either the best players in the world or in contention for that title for YEARS (markeloff's prime lasted 2 and then he dropped off a cliff btw, while the supposed 1.5 merchant KSharp dominated WCG 3.5 years after he won his first CPL liquipedia.net/counterstrike/User:GOrdi).

Neo should definitely be in this list honestly but I guess he had to be omitted because he still coaches Faze. I don't think a former player coaching should impact them being on the list or not though.

"Note: In our initial approach to the Hall of Fame, we decided to treat one's playing and coaching career as one competitive career. This means players such as Filip "NEO" Kubski were not eligible for induction in the (sic) 2024 as they were considered active competitors" EDIT: #54 has since added text about this. Their argument is fine, and just a differing view to the one hltv has taken. There isn't really a right or wrong, while hltv's method could result in a player in the HoF becoming active as a coach again, it allows for someone like zonic's prowess as a player in mTw and as a coach for Astralis to be recognised as one, whenever he should decide to retire.

Potti or Heaton, Ksharp and obviously cyx. i'm suprised SpawN wasn't considered for the list, but I still want Fiffy in it!! I think you should add another rule saying that your last match has to have been played 5 years ago or longer, it certainly removes some of the recency bias. Olof ain't even retired, he's still "benched".

1. I think there should be some stricter rules concerning time, for example 5 years after finishing a career, because I don't see the point of choosing between players from completely different generations like Heaton and kennyS. In rock and roll hall of fame it's 25 years since your first single. 2. If someone disagrees with the first point then I don't see why still competing actively is a limitation. If you're a goat, then you're a goat. You can only get better, but if you're already legendary enough to be in the hall of fame then that's not an issue. 3. "Four players were significantly ahead of the rest." It seems that it was a competition between these particular players when it shouldn't be. Whether a nominee is introduced into the hall of fame should be based on their achievements alone not in comparison with random players that turned out to be in the same group that year. There's also a question of whether you can again be a nominee the next year.

ngl it's great to see cogu getting some deserved recognition. Not a name we see "oftenly" anymore, but the impact this man had on the BR scene is huge. fnx would be a good nomination as well. My man might not had the same impact that cogu had on the 1.6 general and specially the ESWC title, but the fact that fnx was there in the first "major" brazil won in 2006, and the fact he was on the 2 major titles brazil won in CS GO, is quite amazing.

no pasha ? no zeus ? no golden-five ? no SpawN ? wtf is this :D ? If we go just CSGO/cs2 Hall Of Fame then its ok - but we got cyx (R.I.P my friend) solo and Potti

dude like all of these except olof are 1.6 legends taz, neo, kuben and loord (and zeus) are all coaching so that leaves only LUq and pasha who are legends but not as qualified as the other europeans on this list (except maybe olof) to be hall of famers and considering spawn didnt compete in csgo he doesnt have the same longevity as others on this list

reading cyx on this list brought tears to my eyes. Rest in peace.

" ...coaches are not eligible for induction. " So if Blade coaches for the next 20 years he wont be in the hall of fame?? kinda silly imo. Though I like the nominated players so good job.

Cogu deserve the nomination, also this list is to stacked so it's already a honour to be in.

list could be better some good and obvious names with HeatoN, Potti, f0rest, GTR, fRoD, cogu and markeloff. but even here, GTR and markeloff shouldnt be near the first nominations, chronologically alone. players like kennyS and olof should be nowhere close to getting in before the guys before them are inducted. cyx is a great option, but same reason as for GTR and markeloff, he should be around later one. SpawN, walle, RomanR, Blizzard, trace, elemeNt, ruuit, sunman, method, ahl, zet, gore, bullen (RIP) are players who should be among the first names to go in the HoF. f0rest, GTR should be among the next group along gobb, ave, REAL, markeloff, roman, edward, mSx and so on.

@Professeur Cyx was a Macedonian born and raised that lived in Germany, but every time I see him he has German flag instead. And I'm pretty sure he did prefer to have a Macedonian flag, just fyi

What is the criteria for this? If its like "the best/most accomplished cs players of all time who have retired", then theres like a 100 names that should be nominated before some of those...

don't choose cogu. get_right, Heaton, kennys, markeloff - are my picks. I think these four are the best representatives of CS legends to put in a hall of fame, I think people like f0rest definitely deserve it and would join regardless at some point in the future.
