M80 player Ethan "⁠reck⁠" Serrano will miss the start of the season because of a broken leg, the North American organization confirmed to Dust2.us. The team will be fielding former BIG and OG player Nils "⁠k1to⁠" Gruhne as a stand-in until the North American player gets the green light to travel to Europe and link up with his teammates.

"Airlines won't accept someone with a broken leg without a doctor's go-ahead," Michael "⁠Swisher⁠" Schmid explained in a post on X. "Nothing he can do, unfortunately."

The news comes as a blow for M80, who ended the 2024 season with an eighth-placed finish at the Americas RMR, outside of the qualification zone for the Shanghai Major. Still, the North American organization kept its faith in the team's ability to turn a corner and did not make any changes in the off-season.

k1to has been out of action since July 2024, making his final appearance for OG in the BLAST Premier Fall Groups. He was then placed on the bench, becoming a free agent on January 1 following the expiry of his contract.

The stand-in spell will see the 26-year-old reunite with Elias "⁠s1n⁠" Stein, his 2022 teammate on BIG Academy and later on BIG. s1n joined M80 in March 2024, taking over the in-game leader role from Marcus "⁠maNkz⁠" Kjeldsen.

It's unclear how long reck will be sidelined for, but the North American player is unavailable for the team's first tournament of the year, BLAST Bounty Season 1, which will start on January 14. According to Dust2.us, reck should be back in time for ESL Pro League Season 21, in March.

Depends how bad the injury is, and while it obviously doesnt stop him from playing a game, it does stop him from being able to practice and scrim as much. You tend to sleep more after a serious injury, as well as be extremely uncomfortable and unfocused. He probably won't be able to sleep properly for weeks until the pain subsides enough for him to be able to sleep enough, and thus will probably be taking 3-6 naps every day, being forced awake by the pain. As a hockey goalie, i got run into and broke my tibia, I couldnt sleep right for over a month, i had constant doctor visits for the metal bar in my leg, and other checks they had to do. Essentially if the injury is bad enough he wont be able to go to europe until the doctor clears him to, which could be 2-3 months.

also travelling long distance on a plane (they are bootcamping in EU) with a broken leg is a complete shit show I wouldn't wish on anyone I had to travel long distance with a fractured heel and even that was brutal so can only imagine with a full leg break!
