Four teams snubbed after PGL restarts Bucharest invitation process

The Romanian tournament organizer has come under fire over a decision that took away four teams' chances to qualify for PGL Bucharest.

ScrunK criticized PGL after Fire Flux's chance to qualify for Bucharest was taken away

PGL has released an updated list of teams participating in its European, North American and South American qualifiers for PGL Bucharest, revealing that ESC, Fire Flux, FAVBET and Chimera's closed qualifier invitations in Europe had been rescinded.

This came after the Romanian tournament organizer acknowledged and apologized for a "mistake" it had made in the invitation process and said it would refine it "to better comply with [Valve's] Tournament Operation Requirements," which led to a week-long delay in Europe and South America.

PGL Bucharest closed qualifiers delayed

In the original round of invitations that took place in early February, the TO had determined closed qualifier invites and ran open qualifiers before all 12 main event VRS slots were filled out amid negotiations between PGL and some team organizations over the TO's prizemoney allocation.

That is against the principles of Valve's invitation rules. Deciding qualifying spots before the main event can lead to issues when the main event ends up with too few or too many invites depending on how many teams agree to participate.

Following the postponement of the qualifiers, PGL restarted the invitation procedure from the beginning, which gave teams that declined an invitation the first time a chance to change their minds.

G2, Liquid, FURIA among PGL Bucharest invites

In the new round of invites, HEROIC, Nexus, Nemiga and BC.Game accepted an invitation to the European closed qualifier after they declined one in the first place, causing ESC, Fire Flux, FAVBET and Chimera to fall below the cut-off.

While Chimera and FAVBET participated in some of the open qualifiers, ESC and Fire Flux skipped them after accepting closed qualifier invitations the first time and have made their disappointment clear over never being able to qualify for the tournament.

PGL has apologized for a "major oversight" in its original procedure

"After being invited to PGL Bucharest closed qualifier before the open qualifiers started, we now got informed that due to the reschedule we are not invited anymore since teams above us in ranking now have accepted an invite. WTF is this shit," Fire Flux player Robin "ScrunK" Röpke said on X.

"PGL is awesome, you get an invitation to close quali -> they delay the start -> they kick you because they make invitations again -> you don't play open quali and you won't play," ESC's Bartek "mASKED" Trybuła's translated post on X reads.

PGL provided the following statement to HLTV, in which the TO admitted to a "major oversight" that led to restarting the procedure and vowed to learn from the mistake.

"The initial deadline for the 12 direct invites to PGL Bucharest was exceptionally long, lasting over a month. However, due to a major oversight on our part, we scheduled the qualifiers too close to the direct invite deadline (one day apart). This way, we sent the invites for the qualifiers too early," PGL's statement reads.

"Unfortunately we realized this mistake too late and determined that the only way to resolve the issue we had created was to restart the invite process with much shorter deadlines. The second time, some teams that initially rejected the first invite accepted the invite, therefore changing some of the CQ teams.

"We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. We have learned from our mistakes and are committed to improving next time."

The North American closed qualifier kicked off on Wednesday, March 5, and the South American and European closed qualifiers will follow on March 7, with one spot at PGL Bucharest up for grabs among 32 teams in each region.

i'd not fault pgl as much as others would on this...... they acknowledged error and are trying to make changes so it doesnt happen again, which is better than valve not apologizing for anything while still making bad VRS. sometimes u just overlook things. forgive and forget.

well, they clearly did this so more top teams accepted their invites after changing the prize pool distribution, so it's defo 100% on them and apologizing means nothing tbh, the bare minimum it's also on valve for allowing such thing to happen, but valve also doesn't give a f

I agree that is a likely motivation, but the article seems to state that they didn't do the invites in the correct order: "the TO had determined closed qualifier invites and ran open qualifiers before all 12 main event VRS slots were filled out" which I read to mean there may not have been enough ranked teams to fill the main event out. If that was actually the case, I think the "better" way to handle it would have been to just bring in more teams to the main event from the closed qualifiers, but it's not clear if that would have been allowed by Valve on a short notice since that is an event format change.

Terrible take just cause they apologise and say they'll make changes to stop it happening again doesn't mean we shouldn't hold them accountable, those teams will lose out on a potential few vrs points which can lead to other invites in tje future, etc. They screwed up big time. They're sorry amd promise it won't happen again? Good for them, doesn't help the teams, and they should get shit from the community, not forgive and forget

As #55 pointed out, it looks like at least two of these teams may have know that they were not going to make the final invite cut and did end up playing in some of the open qualifiers It's not really clear what PGL communicated to these teams and when. Obviously, it's fair of them to be upset about losing their invites, but it's quite possible that they did in fact have a fair chance to qualify. Chimera made it as far as the round of 32 in the last qualifier before losing to MASONIC.

It's not just about qualifying, all the games are ranked, the points can lead to future invites, this has a knockon effect. "Shit happens" my arse, just cus they sorry you think it should be overlooked? That's exactly how mistakes like this happen in the first place, a lack of accountability
2025-03-06 23:28

Why would you ask teams, that already declined your invite, again if they want to be invited? Could've been a good chance to give some new teams a shot. Not like any of the teams, apart from Heroic, would have a higher chance of advancing, as the four snubbed ones anyway.

The "why" is because if they messed it up initially and have to do it again (which is what they are claiming), then you have to do it the right way. Which means starting at 1st place and working your way down the VRS until every spot in your event is filled.

FAVBET played in open qualifiers 3 and 4, Chimera played in open qualifiers 1, 3 and 4, so they actually failed to qualify.

lol splitting prize money? taking away spots from teams? Romanian ESL 🔥. This VRS thing is such a shitshow there is nothing to do except laugh in the wacky scenarios that come out of it. Also, idk why PGL couldnt somehow get a like allowance to add 4 more teams in the closed quali and just add another match so at least the spots dont get completely yoinked.

Everybody blaming PGL but nobody blaming Valve like its their rules so PGL sent invitation 1 day early and when they did it in the wrong way they breached the valve policy that they must strictly follow so why would they risk violating valve's terms over some 4 t5 teams and in this way they actually increase the quallity of the tournament.

The issue is that they received an invitation to the closed qualifiers, which prevented them from participating in the standard qualifiers. However, after the changes, they lost any opportunity to qualify for the event. There should be some form of compensation for all of them to address this mistake..

Oh no, some 322 teams didn't get to play the closed qualifier.. Although in all seriousness of course this was not a good thing but seems like an easy thing to prevent in the future as well. Regards
