ESL Pro League Season 21MongolZ snatch G2 victory from jaws of defeat
Down a map, the Mongolians recovered a 2-11 deficit on Dust2 to advance to the playoffs-qualifying games.
The MongolZ secured a heard-earned 2-1 victory over G2 to advance to the 2-0 pool in Stage 2 of ESL Pro League Season 21.
With the win, the team has ensured three chances to qualify for the playoffs in Sweden, with their first coming on Sunday.
It looked like it would be a quick day in the office for G2. They first recovered a 1-7 start on Ancient's CT side, punishing a lethal decision to hunt down weapons in round eight and finding huge success with a fast-paced offense, and then got off to a 10-2 T half on Dust2.
G2's Dust2 fumble costs them
But despite winning the CT pistol as well, G2 couldn't convert the 11-2 lead. A forcebuy win got the The MongolZ comeback started, before an over-eager Ilya "m0NESY" Osipov gave up several consecutive opening deaths in a head-to-head fight against Usukhbayar "910" Banzragch.
The MongolZ forced the game to go to overtime from there and locked out the extra rounds as Azbayar "Senzu" Munkhbold put the cherry on top of the massive comeback with a flashy triple-noscope in the final round.
After finding success against the duo on Dust2, the Mongolians once again took advantage of the Nemanja "huNter-" Kovač-Janusz "Snax" Pogorzelski combination on Mirage with a clear focus towards B early in the match.
That yielded them an 8-4 half, an advantage that quickly dwindled away after sides switched, but The MongolZ recovered in time on the CT side with Senzu once again topping the charts.
m0NESY's terrifying form not enough
For his high standards, m0NESY played a sub-par IEM Katowice, but now looks back at his best after arriving to Sweden a month later.
His over-eagerness in the Dust2 fumble will undoubtedly hurt, but he was a menace all throughout the series against The MongolZ otherwise as well as in yesterday's win against paiN.
The No. 2 player of 2024 averages a 1.63 rating after five maps played, trailing only Danil "donk" Kryshkovets on the Stage 2 leaderboard, who has yet to play his second series.
