HooXi: "I was looking to get back as soon as possible, but I don't think the right opportunity came to me"

"I was looking forward to it a lot, maybe too much," the Danish IGL said about his return.

Rasmus "HooXi" Nielsen returned to the server after almost a year of inactivity as Astralis' temporary replacement for Casper "cadiaN" Møller at PGL Astana.

The Dane told HLTV he was excited to be back and even admitted he felt some nerves for the first time in his career. "I was never nervous in G2, but actually I was feeling a bit nervous before this game," he said after his debut against ODDIK.

While the game was much closer than expected, HooXi and company were in a good mood due to coming into the event with a positive mindset amid uncertainty surrounding the entire organization.

You can watch or read the interview below or listen to it on Spotify.

I'm here with HooXi after his Astralis debut at PGL Astana. It was quite a tough game in the end, I would say, but I guess it must feel good to start with a victory?

Yeah, it was not as convincing as I wanted it to be, but I'm obviously happy with the win, and I think we can learn a lot from the game as well. It's also actually a good thing that we played three maps because we haven't had a lot of time to practice, so it's just extra improvement, basically.

And how is it to lead a team with so little practice time for you?

It's always tough to get into a new team, an established team and it's just the IGL switching because I'm still using some of the stuff they had, but also my own, and it's hard to mix it together. But I think we spent the time well, we had nine days of practice, and I think we got a lot of stuff done, but we can't fix the whole world in a week.

You've been away from competition for almost a year. What is it like to be back, not only on the server, but off the server as well?

It feels good. I was looking forward to it a lot, maybe too much. I was never nervous in G2, but actually, I was feeling a bit nervous before this game. That was weird and a new thing I had to deal with, but yeah, I think when you get to come back, see everyone, play, and get that rush feeling, it's great.

Talking about this last year for you, what were you up to? Did you reflect about your previous team, stuff like that?

As soon as I realized that I wouldn't be on a team after the play break, I obviously had some time on my hands to reflect and relax. So I took the first few months, I would say, to just get a bit away from the game to get a fresh mind. I started going to the gym and focused a bit on myself in that way. Then I just started working on my individual level as much as I could, followed the meta the best I could. And yeah, besides that I honestly haven't done much, just CS and the gym, that's it.

Were you actively looking to return as soon as possible, or did a year of break positively affect you and your mental state?

Well, I was definitely looking to get back as soon as possible, but I don't think the right opportunity came to me. And now, looking back, I think it was good for me to get a break. I felt way more energized now coming back to practice. When you get some time away from the game, you see it differently, and you come up with new ideas and stuff.

There is currently a lot of off-server uncertainty about the whole team and organization. But it feels like you guys came into this tournament with a fresh mind, and you had fun even when things didn't go to plan on the second map. How has that been? Do you feel any uncertainty among the players?

Well, of course there's some things in the back of their minds, I think that everything else would be weird. For myself, it's just one event and I'm just trying to get the best out of it. I think it's important for us to show that face of having fun, and that we don't really care too much about getting a bad start or something. Because in practice, we're having a lot of fun. I think it's a great group of guys as well and we mesh really well together. So I think you'll see more of that.

For you personally, you said this is just one event. What are you looking to get out of it, and what effect could it have for the future as well?

Well, for this event, I'm just trying to get the most out of it, the best result both for myself and for the guys, and I think everyone wants to do well. This is the last tournament for them as well before the break, so I want to end on a good note in that way. And for myself after, I don't really know, I haven't really had time to think about it. I honestly just went full CS mode again after getting this opportunity, so I haven't put much thought into it.

let's be honest they played some nice cs. staehr has some nice roles now and overall the team roles seem like they fit a lot better now. I'm happy hooxi has a t1 team because lets faceit G2 2023 with hooxi was a good team. they had some great T sides (remember their inferno streak?) I'm hoping they do well here in astana

"lets faceit G2 2023 with hooxi was a good team" Repeating a lie a 100 hundred times doesn't make it a truth. That team was the definition of inconsistent (that's why they bombed out of the major) and only worked twice in the whole year, which happened to be Kato and Cologne (2 tournaments pretty much after player breaks). People need to quit with the revisionism when even the interviews at the time from the members don't support the "it was a good team" narrative. That team with Niko, M0nesy, prime hunter, and arena jks should have been as consistent as Spirit or Mouz are at the moment. And they didn't.

To be a good team, you have to be consistent. In what world good team and inconsistency can be correlated? Especially with the potential of that lineup. Instead of demanding attention, learn what you're expressing.

You can enter "semantics" and be dumb all you want. In this case (Or any sport), since teams are evaluated through performance and expectations, a team CAN'T be good if it's not being CONSISTENT with their expectations. You can say current GL is a good team because they're consistent with what people expect. You can't say Faze is a good team even if they've had better results than GL, because expectations are higher (Because players' caliber, history of the org, performance the previous year, etc). Hooxi's G2 was not a good team, because if a team with a top 2 squad in terms of firepower was good, they wouldn't bomb out of the major, pro league, or have to play blast showdown after losing to Liquid with Yekindar IGL, Patsi, and Rainwalk. Outside Kato and Cologne, their record against top 10 teams was like 3-14 or something like that. So tell me, what made them a good team under Hooxi if they weren't consistent with a stacked roster? Again, learn what you're expressing.

"stacked roster" as if NiKo and huNter- weren't the reasons why they lost many winnable games and the reasons they bomb out of Rio Major RMR. jks was also mid as fck, let's be honest, he lifegamed in Katowice and that's it. What can you do when NiKo chokes? At least is surprissing how HooXi managed to won Katowice and Cologne when NiKo likes to choke and play bad in important games (as you have seen twice against Vitality in Melbourne and BLAST Rivals) and huNter- is a choker too. It should tell you something that NiKo didn't won even a Cologne with prime nexa IGL, Aleksib, karrigan. HooXi at least got the best out of G2 squad to win Katowice and Cologne in a single year. Yes, HooXi G2 in paper was a good team but realistically the individuals didn't work when it mattered the most. m0NESY was carrying NiKo and huNter- ass. Falcons won PGL Bucharest by degster lifegaming and being MVP btw not because NiKo played well. That should tell something too. @shhno1cares what do you think?

You undersell JKS/Hunter 2023, they were legit on fire. Hooxi was never the issue. Niko does not choke he is solved in big matches for a decade, but his skill level does no diminish due to pressure. Niko recently - new role, facing better players, a role he has not mastered is bound to do less, again I don't choking is overstating it. The limiting factor of G2 was largely calling around a Niko strat as it always has been until recently. This limited Hooxi's ability to call variety and let teams plan easily for the limited options he would have. Hooxi played well IMO taking every single risky fight for the team almost always, but being forced to like Niko play Niko's way, and using m0nesey as 2nd option for an entry was forced from this limited scheme. I would say that m0nesey during that time period did not get his full credit as he took a harder role and still had a baller rating. But I don't think the rest were really liabilities it was just poor coordination due to a limited play set that was not developed like how a normal team operates. As for Bucharest - Niko did his job, he is slotted into a more entry style player (he is not good at it). his rating less looking less impressive, but he is trying to play impactful CS for once. Let's not diminish this as he seems to be following a play call for once in his life. As for Niko's career, and also Hooxi's time on G2. Niko was always the problem. Thought rating meant what he was doing was a winning strategy when it wasn't. Getting an opening does not win the round if you are a massive liability outside of that, and are easily predicted from it, and the team is essentially still in a 4v4 at best because you are limited in what you can do. Right now Niko and Falcons need to do 2 things. The player change makes zero difference IMO. Niko must be made to open fast, then directly slot into bitch/entry/retake first man. He should attempt to master that and then maybe play slightly more selfishly. However given that room, I fear he will go back to trash fragging over impact. My thoughts I think you both are going into extremes a little. But if we are jumping back into Hooxi I don't think if you slot in any other IGL that team does any different. And I think hooxi did a good job given the circumstances.

Congrats he won 2 events in 2 years with a Niko+monesy core that both had to drop 1.35 ratings to win cologne, truly a legendary IGL. Btw this was during the release of cs2 where the scene was terrible, yet he still couldn't win anything but keep calling him gigachad while he drops a 0.4 rating again

"HooXi: "I was looking to get back as soon as possible, but I don't think the right opportunity came to me" Well you did wait quite a long time and in the end chose to accept this offer, now let us see what you can do with it. Making excuses after only playing a single match and even winning it with your team is just a terrible look imho.
