Valve introduces MENA EU sub-region in latest VRS model update

The developer has made significant changes to the ranking model, which may affect the region to which certain teams are assigned.

With the latest change, Wildcard are assigned to the Americas once again

Valve has released an update to the Valve Regional Standings model, notably introducing a Middle East and North Africa (MENA) sub-region in Europe.

One of the notable countries in this new sub-region is Israel, which was previously assigned to Asia. This change effectively makes Liquid a EU-majority roster, even though the team was already classified as European following the June 16 VRS model update that addressed multi-region representation.

Valve removes multi-region representation in VRS model update

Another team impacted by this change is JiJieHao, who will now be classified as a European team. Ranked sixth in Asia, they will find themselves 29th in the EU regional ranking.

Below you can find the full list of countries that have been assigned to the MENA sub-region:

Algeria Algeria
Other Libya
Tunisia Tunisia
Azerbaijan Azerbaijan
Cyprus Cyprus
Iraq Iraq
Jordan Jordan
Lebanon Lebanon
Qatar Qatar
Syria Syria
Yemen Yemen
Egypt Egypt
Morocco Morocco
Armenia Armenia
Bahrain Bahrain
Georgia Georgia
Israel Israel
Kuwait Kuwait
Oman Oman
Saudi Arabia Saudi Arabia
United Arab Emirates UAE

Another significant change with the latest model update is how players from African countries that are not in the MENA sub-region are assigned. Rather than simply counting as Asian, these players now count towards the lowest priority region on a team's roster.

This means that Wildcard will be assigned to the Americas sub-region, rather than Europe, as Aran "Sonic" Groesbeek counts towards the lowest priority region on the team, the Americas.

big TO's started giving asian teams a chance to compete only in 2016 with open-to-closed regional qualies. Asian teams had a shot at the major only in 2015, 2 years later than any other region (and even then only to the closed qualies, before that they had no way of getting in). And through-out all that most Asian teams werent even able to bootcamp in EU like NA/SA teams because of costs. Also there were barely any local Asian tournaments until 2018, just so they can stop hosting them regularly after 2021. Asia was behind all other regions to everything without even being given a fair chance like the other regions had because "we were the weakest region so we dont deserve it"

And don't forget when they prohibited Korean PC bangs to install CS 1.6 so their users can play it for free, that killed Korean CS overnight. And think about the points you just said, despite all the disadvantages APAC had in the game, the MongolZ were still able to rise to top 5 in just 2 years and made us the 2nd strongest region. Do any of you think Zywoo would be able to ascend to being the GOAT if he was born in Darkhan and had 0 money to play outside of winning every tournament

Brother there is no such thing as gatekeeping. A lot of people are rooting for Mongolz; even from non-asian regions. Any CS Team from Japan / Korea would get so much love from the fans, as the west is a big fan of Asian culture in general. It's just that the level, for now, isn't present in those regions, CS took a longer time to develop but now all big orgs in those countries have the cards in their hands, don't tell me that SKT T1 or any big Korean org doesn't have the money to form a CS Roster. It's all about the grind, everyone in the T1 scene in Europe came from nothing as well.

Isn’t it still good for Asia? Some teams like Drillas used to their advantage previous rules, since israeli players are able to compete with EU, but still were counted as Asian + Not many of the countries added to new region had even tier 2 scene. Now East Asia will get more spots for them.

Drillas used 4 European players including Philip "Hadji" Petain who larped as a Moroccan to get into the Asian RMR in a attempt to steal a major spot off MongolZ hard earnt efforts, a totally different situation to what is happening now which is a robbery. MENA including Israel has always struggled and fought the same fight as the rest of the geographically challenged APAC, and teams like Jijiehao are as much Asian as The MongolZ, Lynn Vision or Flyquest.

In all honesty, i think that’s a great opportunity for East Asian teams, to try and make a name for themselves, yes they did MENA dirty, but it is what it is, imo it would be better to just add one more spot for MENA region.

Likely yes. On the other hand Mongolz and asia scene exploded with zero support. I mean it's less likely that JJH consisted of below average players will suceed. If they want to activate MENA give them major slot and let regions develop. This way they are just meat for t3 eu stacks

Typically it's possible for a lot of North African and Middle Eastern players to play in Europe (even if the ping is a little questionable for some), that's why you'll see other esports do things like the EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) league in VALORANT. From a ping perspective it makes sense. This change will probably impact JiJie Hao the most, as it will allow them to accept VRS invites to European only events, that they would love to play in anyway.

Yes, unless Valve decides to give them separate invite(s), like they already did for asian subregions and american ones. But to be completely fair here, that was for MRQ, major invites were for major regions. But now with no MRQs to speak if we shall see

playing ranked LANs is beneficial until cap of 10 ranked LAN wins, obviously tier 2 EU teams should gather those LAN victories too, and due having more online tournaments they should be ranked way higher. If you dont play LANs as tier 2 EU team, you probably aint looking to climb rankings anyway.

Wildcard was already making a change due to Valve's recent non majority change. It's been rumored Peeping is to replace Sonic. If MENA was still in Asia region, Wildcard would be EU (2Am, 2EU, 1As) just like Liquid, now with the change they are EU (3 EU, 2AM) just like Liquid. Roster changes incoming to stay NA/Americas.

The thing is there are too many solid eu tier 2 teams, that’s a nightmare for them to deal with

If the VRS deadline was today, Wildcard and Chinggis Warriors would now get invites over Bluejays and JijieHao. It's not impossible for Bluejays to overtake BOSS to get the last spot, but JijieHao is fucked - they've gone from #6 in one region to #29 in another.
