Complexity exit Counter-Strike: "It's been an incredibly difficult time economically"

The storied North American organization will be without a Counter-Strike team for the first time since 2014.

In a video posted on X, Complexity CEO Jason Lake has announced the organization will be stepping away from Counter-Strike and the team will be moving on. A quartet of players are reportedly in talks to join Passion UA.

"As you can imagine, it's a tough day for us," Lake says. "We love Counter-Strike very much."

Sources: Passion UA in talks over Complexity quartet

The storied North American organization was one of the oldest esports organizations still active in Counter-Strike, acquiring a CS roster in 2004 and fielding a team for all but one of the last 24 years. During that span, the organization brought home a few notable trophies, including title wins at ESWC 2005, CPL Summer 2006, and ESL Challenger Jönköping 2024.

A majority stake in Complexity was sold to Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and real estate investor John Goff in 2017 before the organization was acquired by GameSquare in 2021. Lake, leading an investor group, re-acquired Complexity for $10.36 million in 2024, but scarce sponsorship opportunities in North America have since led to financial struggles for the organization.

"I know our fans are going to have a lot of questions, and honestly the answer is pretty simple," Lake states.

"After a really strong '23 and '24, 2025 in the esports economy has been really challenging for us, and quite simply we have not been able to drive enough revenue to afford to properly support a tier-one team.

"We could have probably dragged things out a bit longer, but we want to make sure we do right by our players and the division, and this was the right thing for us to do at this time.

"We have tried everything and turned over every rock, searched for investment and revenue, but it's just been an incredibly difficult time economically and with shrinking revenues this year, it kind of forced our hand."

Lake also ruled out the possibility of returning to Counter-Strike in the immediate future, saying that one of the aforementioned challenges would first need to be solved, before offering a heartfelt thanks to his players and staff.

It's actually worse than it sounds. One who watches the video might get the impression that's it's due to CS' state that Complexity are losing money but in truth the've pulled out of most esports they're in and only Rocket League and Halo are left. I'm going to predict that from 2026 onward, Complexity will cease to exist as an esports org. Grim

from what I’ve gathered, lake was very optimistic about the future of NA CS. It could be that he hoped to build a team capable of knocking top 10s door. But it goes to show how high the economic floor for professional cs is, and how much money you really need to invest to compete. Buying the org for 10 million says a lot.

Yeah CS in NA is close to dead and we have to accept the struggle they are facing right now, there is no harm in supporting another team from a different region, I mean I'm from South Africa, we basically just have J.T and Sonic to support. I enjoy supporting Sonic (I think he's a solid CS player) when Wildcard is playing and I respect J.T as an IGL but I don't HAVE to support them or the teams they play for just because they're from the same country as me. Lots of other regions and teams out there to support. I have to point out though that flashie as Liquid's coach might just be able to bring some solid structure to an NA team and they are going to perform better soon (even though I empathise with the N*rtz hate lol.

The team probably accepted the invite, however the shareholders probably held a mid-afternoon vote to either re-structure or dismantle the division effective immediately and they unfortunately chose the latter. That's what I think happened anyways which led to them allowing to accept right before being blindsided by the closure.

2025-08-19 22:40

coL was sold to GameSquare, which are the owners of Faze. Per CS rulings to avoid conflict of interest, only one of coL or FaZe would be able to be active at any given time within CS2, so Lake talked and got investors to buy it out, else GameSquare was gonna stick with FaZe. Making a whole new organization is very costly too, 10 mil may look like a lot to keep a brand like coL, but there are a lot of logistical issues such as how long to establish an org, all filling fees that come up with it, plus the previous roster would be locked behind coL's contract and this could have been used by Square to get money to buy out etc. Getting a whole new roster with a whole new org may not pan out well, on top of losing fans in the process (for any given reason, really), which was an easier way of failing out anyway

They dropped that roster because it was a mixmash of half of an ass Monte roster and the underperforming leftovers from the Fnatic buyouts. i don't think it had anything to do with affordability. In CS to make keeping a roster make sense, you need to win or place well. Passion UA wasn't doing any of that.

Sad to witness. Legacy org. Best of luck Jason Lake, you've done a lot for NA CS. Maybe some day we'll see Swole Patrol back? <3 Perhaps De-coupling COL's financial stability from prize winnings and lock down a better deal with the US Army could have yielded more stable cash flow to keep COL afloat more longer term?

Realistically what happens is the the US further relaxes gambling regulation and they just take a US gambling sponsor.

Jason Lake you are a legend and even if this is where the story of Complexity ends for good it was all worth it. All the memories and passion the org put into NA and CS as a whole was worth it. I hope someday Complexity can return. Thank you for EVERYTHING Jason, your actions played a large part in my love for CS to this day. o7

Seems that NA player base lacks passion. Sucks to lose complexity they were a massive force during mid to late CS1.6 pioneers really in and out of the game.

Now NA is truly dead. Col was the only half decent NACS team. With them gone, the whole ceiling and floor of NACS across the board is going to drop dramatically. Less major spots, less competition, less good practice, less tournament showings for NA teams in general. Dark times are ahead of us for North American Counter-Strike. Hope they come back one day. Jason Lake is one of the most passionate people in the scene. Probably the only rich guy with outstanding morals there is. R.I.P.

This is sad. CoL = CS more than any teams tbh. That said, American CS player pool is simply atrocious and it seems that players (and other staff in teams) are in general paid way too much if they are good considering prize pools. You either get sponsors, rich donor or you are fucked up it seems. That might be big problem in future...
