HeavyGod: "We can do a lot of damage in the future; it's just the beginning for me"

HeavyGod hopes G2 can keep leveraging their hard work not to become just a flash in the pan.

Moments after lifting the BLAST Open London trophy after a five-map thriller against Vitality, the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, Nikita "⁠HeavyGod⁠" Martynenko, spoke to HLTV about the double achievement.

The Israeli could not be more grateful for his first Big Event victory and getting his hands on his first MVP medal, giving props for his whole team and especially Nemanja "⁠huNter-⁠" Kovač and Eetu "⁠sAw⁠" Saha, who kept the team composed in the stressful finish.

"huNter-'s experience work, and sAw's timeouts are really pushing us up mentally and tactically, he's pushing the limits for us," the Israeli went on.

"The sky is the limit for me," he said about his first MVP medal. "I hope I can do more damage in the scene. I will do my best, I will do the best work I can put."

Your first MVP, how does that feel?

It's crazy. I can't describe it. I'm really grateful for this moment.

That trophy win as well, how surprised were you that you could pull it off?

It was a crazy best of five. Vitality fought hard, we fought hard. I'm really impressed with my team's level, it's crazy. huNter-'s calls, everyone's support, I'm really grateful for my team and the coach and all the staff, for all they did for us.

How did you manage to get it over the line? It's your first arena event as a team, was it the sAw timeout, huNter-'s experience, what pushed you over the line?

Both. huNter's experience worked this map, and sAw's timeouts are really pushing us up mentally and tactically, he's pushing the limits from us. He's changing us. He's a crazy guy, just adorable really.

HeavyGod: “Everybody says I’m harsh on myself; I’m trying to be a perfect player”

Two days ago you spoke to me about trying to become the perfect player, how much of an individual achievement is this event for you?

Woah. It's my first MVP, obviously, and it's my first trophy. The sky is the limit for me. I'm really grateful for it once again. I hope I can do more damage in the scene, I will do my best. I will do the best work I can put. Once again I want to thank everyone around me as well, really.

What about that comeback on Inferno, 6-10 down, you must have been thinking that it was Vitality's again. What changed things?

We just said, 'let's play default, trust ourselves and our guts, let's do reactions.' huNter- tried to maintain us at our normal level, and not be stressed. sAw was doing a lot of timeouts for us as I said before, trying to push us. On the last map he said, 'just play simple,' he really believes in us and trusts in us. He gives us a free hand for us to do whatever we think is the right thing. He gives a lot of advice in game, I'm really happy for it.

And MATYS, it's his first proper arena event outside of Shanghai's groups, how amazing is it that he got so close to an MVP, I know you got him in the end, but what's your thoughts on how he played?

He's a crazy guy, just an insanely good player. Really good guy, really good teammate in and out of the game. He's putting in a lot of effort and work and wants to do the best for us. I appreciate that I have him on the team.

Last question, on G2, is this sustainable?

I think yeah, obviously. If we continue to put hard work and a lot of effort into our strat book and individual work hours, trust our teammates, trust our staff, trust everyone around us, I think we can do a lot of damage in the future. It's just the beginning for me.
