ESWC drops CS, side tourney in CS:GO

The Electronic Sports World Cup has announced the 2012 season, once again with the grand final during Paris Games Week running November 1-4, though this season with no Counter-Strike as a game title for the official disciplines.

Oxent acquired the French brand back in May, which put the former ESWC president Mattieu Dallon back onboard as the Managing Director.

Today Oxent announced the plans for ESWC in 2012, which marks a return to Paris Games Week for the grand final, taking place November 1-4 at Porte de Versailles in the French capital.

The trend from other event organizers as of recently has carried over to ESWC, as Counter-Strike has been dropped. Last year ESWC had both 1.6 and Source on the list of game titles, but this year both have been scratched.

Official game titles for ESWC 2012 are:

StarCraft 2
Dota 2
ShootMania Storm
TrackMania Nations
FIFA 13
Tekken Tag Tournament 2

In the press release on announcing the 2012 event ESWC stated several side tournaments will take place, including a tournament for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

It is also mentioned that additional games, tournaments or show matches may be announced in the coming weeks. No detailed information was disclosed regarding the qualifying stages for this years event, including the CS:GO side tournament.

That was only dropped by WCG in 2005, he said many organisations. So far IEM, WCG, eStars, ESWC have all dropped 1.6, so this is more than one organisation. Not to mention the teams who have dropped 1.6 You are looking at whole new ball game here and the move was bound to happen.

it really looks like a conspiracy now since there are not strong reasons to drop a game that still delivers strong spec numbers (sometimes even more than newer games like Starcraft II). IEM,WCG,ESWC are now officially not part of our community anymore, they turned the back on us, its better if we do the same to them.

He said sponsors don't primarily target that however unless you have proof that Valve are paying organisations to drop 1.6 in favour for CSGO then you have no leg to stand on, Valve are not to blame here. Organisations don't get paid by Valve, it's one of the reasons why Valve said they wouldnt run their own tournament to support CSGO because tournament organisers already support CS in a big way. I just dont get why people blame VALVE, when these tournaments have boards of executives who look at what games they can support.

I sincerely hope you guys will support CS:GO, Most of you guys hating on it I guess you havent played the game... There are problems yes, It's in beta, what do you expect? I had my beta key for about 2 months now and I enjoy the game ALOT, I love everything except sound and the recoil of non snipers wich is why I only use AWP, close to it. Movement is not the best, I miss bhoping but as far as the crouchwalk or whatever you say in english, I love that It's gone, I think that sort of ruined the game when some guy thought of it, the sound werent as reliable anymore. So from a quite old school and die hard CS 1.6 fan wich apart from alot of you have realized that we wont have 1.6 in big tournaments anymore, I hope you support CS:GO and give it time to improve, 1.6 was not the perfect game that you play today from the beginning and there are still bugs in it today. Support GO from beta till the full release, continue to support it, give Valve feedback and perhaps we will have our new game!

First off, I've played it for months now. "It will be good." This argument has been parroted for almost a year now. At the beginning people said it would be good when it got out of beta; even you say "it's in beta", but with its release about a month away, it's clear it won't suddenly become good once it's out of beta, so why are you mentioning it? Put another way, you are saying it is not good but could be....Guess what? So could literally any other game, but that doesn't mean every other game will be good eventually. IF it ever becomes good, people will play it. If it doesn't, it'll die off. So, what's the point of making the argument to support it while is sucks? People will switch if it gets better. People won't--and shouldn't--if it doesn't. Finally, your last paragraph implies that 1.6 fans should want CS:GO to thrive because 1.6 is done competitively. Why is this? 1.6 fans should want CS:GO to become popular solely because they share a name? Or are you one of the people yelling, "The community should stay together and unite with Source's by all switching to GO!" Either way, the community grew up around 1.6 solely because it is a great game. If GO sucks--and so far it does--then many players won't switch, and those that do will leave shortly. If you really want the community to stay together, find a good team fps for everyone to play. That is the only way to keep the community together, to unite under a game with the same qualities as 1.6, not a game solely sharing its name.

There's a major patch coming for the sound and annoying stuff such as silencer for the colt. Open beta is arriving soon when they will get ALOT more feedback and can fix more things. What I'm saying is this... We shouldnt cheer for CS:GO because it share it's name we should HELP cs:go because It's the closest to counter strike there is. ProMod is also out and they're giving out a major patch soon I believe, have to see how good that is.

the thing is cs:go ins't targeting us, oldies. they are spotting kids <14 yo. it's impossible for us to go with another game, no matter what, and they know that. how can you switch to another game and follow the scene? what memories with the new game you may have? you wont be able to do white nights in icafe`s like you did with 1.6 for several years, you won't have even time to play from home, because most of us have a job now, maybe a family and so forth. so it's normal to follow other targets, but the problems with the kids nowadays is that they play shitty console games and angry birds.

I basically feel the same as you right now but I must agree that the golden times were much earlier. (those where you head to the local LAN to play CS etc) These recent years were great for CS & I kept following PRO scene but the real feeling of CS was till 2006 (for me). It was just our age or just the way games were back then (simple but insane gameplay). Anyway, completely agree that game nowadays are shit compared to the older ones.

none. i was saying that they are targeting kids, not us, oldies, because we don't have the time on our side anymore. what they can't see is that these kids have other way of life. they are playing in smartphones and other gadgets. in conclusion, they will lose us, oldies, and they wont have a mass of new young users. on the other hand, maybe they will sell 20.000.000 keys for the game and that's the success for them. i don't thing they even intend to create a lastlong game for pro scene.

Every cs event started small, just start making some regional tournaments in your country, and try to get bigger and bigger... sponsors will come. Here in Portugal we are trying that, cs its pretty alive... So, if you want to keep playing your favorite game, help your own community grow.

Look, although our professional scene is like you said, flawless, the scene here is alive, there are lots of gather channels, tournaments, LAN-houses which organize tournaments. It's considered among the community, that DH Winter not gonna feature cs 1.6. When on hltv.org was popular a rumor about qualification on Gamegune for DH Winter, so then DH orga sent a message to hltv.org, saying like : "Oh, don't hope for cs 1.6 very much, we haven't announce any news yet." So I don't think that we will see cs 1.6 anywhere except GameGune. We need Arbalet :)

I don't want or expect to see them re-make all the mechanics, the game is very much playable the way it is now. With the new sound-system coming out, it should be a pretty complete game. Things like the spray-recoil, maps and balance-tuning can easily be done over time and should be, as opinions on those matters are very much subjective.

I would hope you research things, let's be honest if people enjoy the game they will watch tournaments and pro players strutt their stuff. Cricket as a sport probably isn't the biggest sport in the world but it still attracts large numbers in the crowd. Darts is a minor sport but still gets millions of viewers. CS viewing numbers have been eclipsed by a recent console LAN in Europe which had 110 clans participate in an well over 150k spectators watch a poxy CoD tournament. Just because you believe another game is inferior does not mean it doesn't have justifiable audience views!

TM got released in 2003/04. It was a part of ESWC, WCG, ... but: Where is the trackmania community? Where are the scene news? Where are the 10000000 fan-videos? Where are the legendary pro-players? Where are the 100k live-viewers? Where are the live-commentators and the replays? ... When it comes to esport Trackmania is, was and will always be a promotion-titel, nothing more. Don't get me wrong. I don't have a problem with TM. It's fun to play from time to time, but it's clearly not an esport-titel like SC, CS, WC3 and Quake are.

Don't ask me why they've dropped cs, but since TM was created by a French company called Nadeo, which in '06 created a free TrackMania Nations version special for ESWC, so they probably have something in common and don't want to drop their local game. By the way, organisations, such as dignitas, have their TM squad, so the game isn't so bad, if you ask me.

IEM,WCG,ESWC are now officially not part of our community anymore, they turned the back on us, its better if we do the same to them. I bet tournament organizers got in agreement to drop CS this year all together, we should stop watching their events for the sake of OUR community. We as consumers should be respected and not played by tournament organizers. I still enjoy the game and playing 5vs5 with my friends (the few times I can), I won't play anything else because some executives don't want to make tournaments of my favourite game. fuck them.

At first I was like "It's understandable, CS isn't as popular as LOL or SC2 anymore." But then I "ShootMania Storm? TrackMania Nations? FIFA 13? In what fucking universe are these even esports titles?" The audience for these games is tiny compared to CS. Same goes for the ricidulous WCG game choices in the last few years. What the fuck are these people smoking?

i dont get it....just because some tournament have dropped cs 1.6 doesnt mean tht it is dead or something....if u play the game and enjoy it, i dont think anything is dead....we can still buy cs1.6 on steam and there are local tourneys everywhere, so this doesnt mean it is dead, it just means tht it is still a legit game with over 1,000,000 players...

Guys, this is my honest opinion, cs dying? I dont think so, this tournaments are dropping cs, that's a bad thing for sure and the result of that isn't the death of 1.6 but the death of international community. I will give you and example, in my country 1.6 it can be all the things that u want but it isn't death for sure and I bet that in your country there are tournaments as hell too. It's just my opinion, but I have to agree, a few years and our international community will be gone if things like this continue...

Why would'nt CPL feature CS 1.6 in 2012... there was a vote for cs 1.6 for being played on cpl 2012 and there were tons of votes for cs 1.6 there is no doubt if cs 1.6 won it or not.. IT DID. I do not understand why cpl would not feature cs 1.6!

CS:S community may switch CS:GO. 1.500 viewers doesn't matter at all. but %80 of 1.6 community hated CS:GO. Last gameplay update came 4 months ago. Valve said they'renot making a competive game like 1.6 at the beginning of CS:GO. So it's obvious we won't see any big community behind CS:GO. That's why it will never be an esport. (Casual gamers can play CS:GO. But i don't think they will prefer CS:GO instead of BF3,MoH,COD..)

They are triying to make a competitive game, if they can finally do it or not thats another thing. The game has been in beta for one year more or less and all major changes are for the PC version (where is the most competitive scene). All that ''casual gamers'' didnt have the chance of playing competitive I can guarantee that all random those ''commentated youtube gameplays'' will love to compete and take care of the scene just as we did back in the good days of 1.6. Not only CSS and 1.6 players will play A LOT of LoL players who used to play FPS are willing to feel the adrenaline that a fps title can give you, and not only LoL, CoD4 has ''many'' players too, MW3 players are starting to realize that every year a new game equal than the previous one is just a scam (I personally hate what they did to this franchise after CoD2). Cant talk for the BF3 or SC2 community tho. If CsGo is not a succes I bet CSP wont be either, casual gamers (which is a partial target of this game) wont play a not mainstream game, as simple as that.CSP is a wonderful game dont get me wrong the first time I tried it I was amazed. TL;DR - Well there is no TLDR

Not competive enough. That's what Counter-Strike is: a game of skill. And this is what CS:GO is: an effort to put anyone who has or should play Counter-Strike into the same game. That's a big enough goal but not a grand enough one to merit the name Counter-Strike 2.
