Top 20 players of 2019: device (3)

Nicolai "device" Reedtz comes in third in our top 20 players ranking, powered by Xtrfy and LOOT.BET, thanks to great numbers put up consistently at some of the biggest tournaments of 2019.

Top 20 players of 2019: Introduction

device started attending CS:Source LANs as a teenager, making the rounds in the Danish scene and playing well enough to attract the attention of Copenhagen Wolves. It wouldn’t be until CS:GO, however, that device truly started to make a name for himself as a potential top tier player in Denmark. At the start of 2013, after some time in lesser teams, device joined Henrik "FeTiSh" Christensen in CPH Wolves, in which he would go on to meet the two players with whom he would establish the core of Astralis, Peter "dupreeh" Rasmussen and Andreas "Xyp9x" Højsleth.

Other priorities in life, such as school and playing badminton at a high level, kept device on the sidelines for a few months — although he didn’t stop playing Counter-Strike and was still seen in mix-teams —, but it didn’t take long for him to settle back in with FeTiSh and company. The young Dane posted a 1.14 LAN rating in 2013, but, having just played at a small number of events and without ever going past the quarter-finals, he was not in contention for a spot in the top 20 list, the only year in which he has failed to make the cut.

"I don’t think you can put a date and a time to when Counter-Strike became a priority, but with injuries in badminton and my progress in CS, it was a development that came naturally to me quite early. I’ve always been committed to what I do, when I do it, so it is more a matter of how much time I spend on one thing, in this case CS. When you start winning and people start talking about you in positive terms, you tend to seek the feeling of accomplishment—that goes for me as well. It’s a positive circle as you start doing more of what you’re good at, which makes you do better and at some point, that’s what you do."

The team signed for Dignitas in 2014 and started to get more and more international recognition as a stable attendee at some of the biggest events at the time, but deep runs at tournaments still eluded the Danes. Great performances turned into a struggle once the matches got serious in the playoffs and it didn’t matter where they were playing or who they faced: Dignitas could not make it past the semi-finals as the team’s star players tended to disappear under the limelight. That year saw device make the HLTV top 20 for the first time, albeit by the skin of his teeth, with his big match performances being what held him back the most.

device made his first top 20 in 2014, during his time in Dignitas

The new year brought with it a big change as in-game leader FeTiSh was pulled out of the starting lineup and Finn "karrigan" Andersen was brought in to take the reins of the team. The second big change followed soon afterward when the Danes left Dignitas and joined TSM. Under a new leadership in the server, device and dupreeh shone more than ever, helping the team win three events in a row, CCS Kick-off Season Finals, FACEIT League Stage 1 Finals and Fragbite Masters Season 4 Finals, and two more later in the year, FACEIT League 2015 Stage 2 and PGL Season 1 Finals. It was then that device made his first big splash individually, jumping all the way to third place in 2015's top 20 player of the year ranking.

“There are a lot of factors and a lot of people who deserve credit for the way we developed as players but also as individuals. karrigan’s role should not be underestimated, and he gave me a lot. His passion and sense of the game at that time was something that affected everybody he played with, and it certainly gave us more room to do what we do best. That being said, both dupreeh and I were at a stage in our development where we constantly kept on pushing ourselves. No doubt we have a special connection and common feel for the game, and I am not sure I’d be the same player without Peter beside me at an early age. But again, there are many people who could be on that list…”

Another new year brought another set of challenges and device was thrown a curveball in 2016 when René "cajunb" Borg was removed from the lineup of the newly minted Astralis. As a lurker who sometimes picked up the AWP, device was now thrust into the role full-time, which required a period of adaptation and refinement to a new set of skills as he became the team’s main sniper when they signed another rifler, Markus "Kjaerbye" Kjærbye. Astralis’ struggles became apparent as they dipped well below what was expected of them after breaking out as a world-class team and another change was made when Lukas "gla1ve" Rossander took over the in-game leadership from karrigan, helping the squad make second place at ELEAGUE Season 2 and lift their only trophy of the year in Anaheim at the ECS Season 2 Finals. Despite Astralis' shaky results in 2016, device showed he was up to the task and that he could be a superstar with the AWP as well as with rifles as he finished every tournament with +1 ratings to earn another third place in an HLTV top 20 ranking.

device finished in third place on the top 20 ranking in both 2015 and 2016

The addition of gla1ve straightened Astralis back out and they carried their good form into the new year, winning the ELEAGUE Major in Atlanta and IEM Katowice 2017, but device would once again have to jump over a hurdle when diagnosed with a hiatal hernia—a stress-induced condition in the stomach causing severe acid reflux—that demanded immediate attention. Astralis didn’t win anything other than the $250,000 Clash for Cash showmatch put on by ELEAGUE until the end of the year and had to play several events with stand-ins as device took a leave of absence to get his health back in order ahead of 2018. Despite the obstacles, device had solid numbers throughout the year, with the exception of his last event, IEM Oakland, where he had to be rushed to the hospital, and was named the fifth-best player of 2017.

device was able to return to the servers promptly in 2018 and went on a historic year-long run with Astralis, who brought in Emil "Magisk" Reif after flunking out of ELEAGUE Major Boston. They won ten tournaments, including the FACEIT Major and four ntel Grand Slam eligible events (DreamHack Masters Marseille, ESL Pro League Season 7 Finals, IEM Chicago and ESL Pro League Season 8 Finals) to secure the $1 million prize. Astralis changed the meta inside and outside the server that year, with RFRSH pouring more and more resources into a team that was revolutionizing the way the game is played. But even with seven MVPs under his belt, including one at the FACEIT Major, and a 1.24 LAN rating, device still finished second in that year's top 20 ranking as the top honour went to Oleksandr "s1mple" Kostyliev after the Ukrainian hit peak levels never witnessed before.

“You can’t fully comprehend what you’re a part of while you’re in it. I don’t really focus on what I’ve achieved that way or the magnitude of what I and we do. That might all come later, I guess. What I do know is how much I hated not being a part of the team in late ‘18, when I was out for a period of time. I know how much it means to me to contribute and to help my teammates, and that feeling might have been amplified by not being there for what felt like forever. It did give me an opportunity to appreciate other things in life, though, and I think it’s something that we have developed on the team as well. The mental balance, the ability to focus on other things in life and be there for the people who are close to you. It also adds to your hunger when you are back with the boys.”

“First of all, all teams and players take inspiration from others. It’s not a one way street, where everybody’s copying us or trying to figure us out. We constantly get inspired by other teams and my way of playing is certainly also inspired by some of the great players out there. That being said, there is no doubt that our results and the fact that we talk openly about how we work with performance inside and outside the game means that a lot of teams, organizations and players look at how we do things. That’s cool. It keeps us on edge and helps us to keep pushing."

Astralis attended iBUYPOWERS Masters 2019, a turbulent event that kicked the year off ahead of the IEM Katowice Major. The Danes were upset by Liquid at the event in Los Angeles for the first time after having dominated them during the whole of 2018, but not much was made of the Medium Event as the first Major of 2019 was right around the corner. device earned his first EVP and was fourth in the running for MVP in Katowice, where he ended with a 1.32 rating, a 1.40 impact and a 75.5% KAST in his team’s first-place run. It looked like the Danes were on track to repeat 2018 all over again as they dropped only one map during the whole tournament in Poland, crushing all opposition in the playoffs.

BLAST Pro Series São Paulo came next and Astralis lifted another trophy after taking revenge against Liquid in the grand final. The Danes once again showed their superiority, dropping but one map at the event, and device was granted his first MVP of the year thanks to a 1.35 rating and 1.47 impact rating. Another BLAST Pro Series event followed, this time in Miami, but the commanding team seen in 2018 and at the first Big Events of 2019 was nowhere to be found. Astralis lost three out of the five group stage best-of-ones and were out of the event, the only one in 2019 which device ended in the red (0.94). The third in a succession of BLAST Pro Series events ensued when the team traveled to Madrid after securing a spot at the ESL Pro League Season 9 Finals. Astralis managed to make the final in the Spanish capital, where device earned an EVP mention thanks to a 1.23 rating, but they faltered in the two-map grand final against ENCE.

“[Miami was the most challenging moment of 2019], we were simply tired and it was an awful feeling. We were completely drained as a team and as players, and I started caring less. I think it was the same for all players, but we dealt with it as a team and with the amazing support from the people around us."

Astralis returned to more classical tournament structures at ECS and ESL’s flagship events, the ECS Season 7 Finals and the ESL Pro League Season 9 Finals, before ending the first half of the year at ESL One Cologne. The Danes struggled to find their old form, however, as FURIA ended their run in the ECS group stage, with wins in the opener and decider, while Liquid, who by then were hogging the spotlight, took them out in the quarter-finals at the EPL finals in France. At ESL One Cologne it was Mathieu "ZywOo" Herbaut and company who ended Astralis' run in the semi-finals. device had particularly good numbers in London, scoring a 1.37 rating and 92.5 ADR, followed by a 1.25 rating in Montpellier and 1.13 in Cologne—the latter being the only one of the three where he wasn't named an EVP.

"[The last tournaments before the break were] the same as with Miami, we needed to recharge, refocus and get a healthy approach to everything. It’s extremely tough to keep on developing, keep the motivation and hunger at 100 percent when you’ve been there for a while. All of a sudden a loss in a final is called a failure even though you beat every opponent but one, and when you get to a point where you are not at 100%, there are so many great teams out there ready to take your spot. We are here for the long run, and if we need to change something to stay on top—or to get back—we will."

After the summer break, Astralis came back in full force at the StarLadder Major in Berlin. Despite losing a group stage match to NRG, the Danes went on a tear in the playoffs and didn’t drop a single map en route to the title, beating every team they came across, including then-No.1 Liquid, in convincing fashion. With a year-high seven 1vsX situations won, 1.26 rating (1.47 in the playoffs), 83.3 ADR and 1.37 impact, device was awarded the MVP medal of the tournament.

“We gave ourselves room and re-focussed as a team with the organization around us. We talk about it a lot, but I honestly do believe we have the strongest foundation of any Counter-Strike organisation or any esports organization in general. It would have been so much harder to make the right decisions and to get back on top if we had to do it alone.

“[Skipping events at the beginning of the year] is the main reason for us coming back in full force, and it was the healthy choice for everybody on the team."

Following the Major win Astralis traveled to Brooklyn for ESL One New York, where they reached the final, once again beating Liquid, before losing to a burgeoning Evil Geniuses, the team that had beaten them at the Major while still under NRG. device had a discreet 1.08 rating and his only negative playoff rating of the year, 0.93. DreamHack Masters Malmö followed straight after, with the team leaving New York the night of the final to make it in time to play in Sweden, where they finished in 3-4th place losing to the eventual champions, fnatic. device had his second-highest tournament rating of the year (1.42), a 92.5 ADR and a 1.63 impact to earn another EVP mention.

BLAST Pro Series Copenhagen then rolled around, an elusive tournament for the Danes, who had failed to make the final in the previous two years. In 2019 it was no different as losses to FaZe and Ninjas in Pyjamas, and a tie against Natus Vincere forced the Danes to watch from the sidelines as the grand final was played in front of their own fans. On an individual level, device had his highest ADR of the year, just shy of 94, and a solid 1.19 rating.

device had a standout performance at IEM Beijing despite not winning the MVP

After their fourth and last regular BLAST Pro Series stop of the year came IEM Beijing, Astralis’ first tournament on Chinese soil. Entering the final sprint of the year, the Danes once again kicked it into top gear and came out on top. device had his highest rating of the year in Beijing, 1.43, in addition to an 89.3 ADR and a 1.56 impact rating, but he had to settle for an EVP as gla1ve bagged the MVP award. Astralis followed their victory up with another trophy, this time in Arlington, Texas, at the ECS Season 8 Finals. They beat fnatic, Evil Geniuses and Liquid on their way to the title, with device winning his third - and last MVP - medal of 2019 after posting a 1.27 rating and a 0.79 KPR, keeping his perfect streak of MVP honours from the ECS tournaments won by his team.

Astralis then won their group at the ESL Pro League Season 10 Finals with another victory over Liquid that cemented their status as the best team in the world. The Danish squad slipped against a rising MOUZ in the semi-final, however, and device ended the tournament with a 1.05 rating and 67.6 ADR, his lowest numbers since Miami. Astralis went on to close the year out in fashion, winning the BLAST Pro Series Global Finals in Bahrain with two series wins against Liquid and one against Ninjas in Pyjamas, never dropping a map. Fourth in the MVP race with a 1.20 rating, device was given his seventh and last EVP mention of the year.

"We have a solid organization around us that keep on promoting new ways to support our development as a team and as individuals. 2019 was probably the year in which we got the most heat for doing things differently when we started prioritizing tournaments hard. It was something we knew we would be doing but fatigue and lack of results meant we had to find a new way to re-energize. We took a lot of heat, which is what it is, but in the end we saw other teams doing the same and ultimately I think it contributed to a renewed focus on health and stress among players. If we have something to do with that, I’m pretty happy about it.

"If new formats give more structure and time for teams to prepare and plan, it is all good. Everything new can be seen as a test, but once a decision is made in regards to a tournament, our job is to focus on how we get the best out of it. More structure would be healthy."

Why was device the 3rd best player of 2019?

Just like the other members of this year's 'big four club', made up of the four players who were a level above everyone else in 2019, device was incredibly consistent and had remarkable peaks and a great impact inside the server. His overall fragging (0.77 KPR, fifth-highest) and ability to get multi-kills (19.5% of rounds, sixth-best) were excellent, but what really made him stand out as an impactful player (1.29 Impact, the fourth-best) was his opening duel prowess: he boasted the fifth-highest opening kills ratio (0.13 per round) and the fourth-highest success rate (61.5%). device was also one of the hardest players to kill with 0.60 deaths per round, the eighth-lowest overall. All of that helped him average a 1.22 rating in 2019 —the third highest in the world.

device had two EVPs and an MVP in the last four events of the year

More importantly, those great numbers were a result of standout performances at some of the biggest tournaments on the calendar. He won an MVP medal at the StarLadder Berlin Major and was also in the running at IEM Katowice. He collected two more MVP awards at BLAST Pro Series São Paulo and ECS Season 8 Finals, which increased his career tally to 15, the most of all players, and had strong EVP performances at IEM Beijing, DreamHack Masters Malmö and BLAST Pro Series Global Final.

Although device did have a few events where he was less successful in big matches, he made up for it at other times, eventually averaging a 1.19 rating in big event playoffs (fourth-highest), which increased to 1.23 in the grand finals (second-best). A poor display at BLAST Pro Series Miami was a small stain on his 2019 résumé, but even with that accounted for, he was one of the most consistent players, ending the year with 78.2% of maps with above-average ratings (fourth-most) and with at the very least a Valuable Player selection at 14 of his 15 events. All of that put him in contention for the very top spot, but two other players were even slightly more impressive.

Bold prediction:

device joins top 20 freshman Ludvig "Brollan" Brolin in picking Ninjas in Pyjamas’s Nicolas "Plopski" Gonzalez Zamora as his bold prediction of a young or lesser-known player who will be in next year’s top 20 ranking, praising the Swede's great mind for the game and aim.

Sweden Nicolas "Plopski" Gonzalez Zamora

"He’s a great player with a great mind and aim. I’m sure both he and the NiP guys are going to do well this year."

Coldzer0 was never better than s1mple individually. He had better team and better results. Its a team game , not 1v1 party. And Device , yes some of us are pissed because he's #3 but not 1 or 2 , but its HIS own fault. He had to perform well last 3 events but he f*cked up.

ok, you can check by yourself: top 20 is about individual stats dude, that's what we are all talking about 2016: hltv.org/news/19662/top-20-players-of-20.. hltv.org/news/19642/top-20-players-of-20.. 2017: hltv.org/news/22516/top-20-players-of-20.. hltv.org/news/22421/top-20-players-of-20..

It's because if you look hltv stats, ZywOo is better than s1mple. The only thing we didn't know is if the team achievement were enough to put dev1ce in front of ZywOo. But as we can see it's not enough, so ZywOo is #1 100% sure

True zywoo is #1 for certain. If zywoo is not #1....... HLTV ranking would show true colors too much. They already robbed device and eliege by putting simple above. so they showed the colors but subtle.

That's part of why I find him enjoyable. He makes some of the most sound decisions in-game rather than relying heavily on skill. Guy's probably the overall best CS:GO player when you consider he's been Top 5 for so long.

True, Style is a choice why would it matter for rankings? HLTV player rankings is Biased fan based bullshit if you ask me. Im glad they at least do the team rankings right since they are most important. but then again I would say fnatic did better then mouzsports in 2019. Its a joke that fnatic is not #3 over mouz. Just because mous lurked during the year and made a good end sprint doesnt justify the rank jump they made. #5 EG / Vitality #4 for mousports would of been deserved. #3 fnatic #2 liquid probably still #1 Astralis Although I believe mouz will do great this year 2020 thats not 2019!

I agree. There's a lot of situations where the rankings don't always seem balanced. They'll rate a player/team higher for one set of reasons, while not doing the same for another. They have gotten better about it, granted, but it's still an issue. I also believe fnatic are a better team than mouz currently. I do think the rankings will be more sound shortly, though, once the competitions start back. My guess is we'll see Astralis/Liquid again, with fnatic/mouz pulling close.

flashy plays are fun... but doing your best to win the game is more skillful. thats why organisations that rely on one or two great players fall short. they think whenever the main players die its a lost round. while device can go high and low whenever is necessary, in my opinion that takes more skill than just playing like you are on matchmaking

Stats are just part of it, check any sport you want and you will realize how much achievements make a difference on ranking players. Idk why people gets so heavily influenced by stats now on CS, HLTV rankings didn't work that way some years ago.

If TL had a mini era, then SK had a full-on era. But thing is... SK/LG never had an era. EG back to being inconsistent, mouz proved jackshit, Vitality is bad, superstar, a capable player and three washed up players. Nothing competitive here.

this ranking is utter bullshit . Winning almost everything and being the most important and stable guy on a worldclass team, will always make your stats lower.

Nope .. playing with noobs as RPK, Alex, Shox, Apex, Flamie, Guardian and boombl4, makes your stat incredible. Look at zywhoo and games Vitality are losing.

i predicted this shit will happen... when last year simple got the #1. it is finally individual ranking and simple have 1.3 rating this year while device have 1.22... "team simple and electronic with 3 bots" and "team zywoo with 4 bots" are absolutely undeserved this year however hltv really ignores the achievement when the stats difference is there. tbh i think that device should be at least #2 and elige should be #3, u know, simple even dont have a mvp... as for zywoo he absolutely deserved #1 as he have over 1.3 rating and 5 mvps, even 2 of them is caught by this player when the shitality lost... i think this team and these 4 bots undeserved to have such a star, as even zywoo can perform soooo good and they even cant get over 2 championship of big events.(ecs 7 is not really "big"...)

How can device be better than simple in stats if simple and co. only played tier 2-3 teams and got knockout before reaching the playoffs. Ofc simple will have better stats in that regard coz he is playing with lesser maps farming stats on shitty teams meanwhile device played almost top tier teams. I can't argue on simple being better than device in skills but based on stats? Naaah man. Simple is just a statpadder like elec this year. Navi played shitty teams and won only one minor event. Simple 2018 is way way better thank he is in 2019.

I'm dissapointed HLTV. Device AND Elige should have been ahead of Simple. The man who threw his teams best chance for a big event win in the latter half of the year attempting to knife Nitro. Elige and Device might not put up quite the same numbers but they certainly win a whole whole lot more and their numbers aren't that much worse. I think the thinking here is a little shaky.

Hello HLTV, s1mple played half of the events device attended this year and still you don't measure it to draw a proper ranking ? 13 Events for s1mple, including 4 BLAST, 1 useless lan (GG.BET with 4 teams and 3 tier3 teams), 1 StarSeries were they finished last, EPICENTER close to last and then only 3rd places with 1 title. So that's just 8 events were it mattered. I'm really surprised. Last year it was obvious he was undoubtedly 1st but this year being in front of device is a daylight robbery.

Okay wtf?! HLTV what are u doing? S1mple won 1 tournament this year ?!?!? 111111?!?!?! Dev1ce won 6 tournaments, including both fucking majors. This is fucking ridicilous. S1mple got 1 MVPs this year and dev1ce got 3 MVPs. OMG this is such a joke

yhea people keep talking about individual achievements but MVPs are individual achievements lmao and no you don't need to be in the winning team to get one, like s0.93mple in 2018, Zywoo won ESL One Cologne's MVP while losing in the final. So yhea Device isn't just winning because or with his team, he's consistently the best player of his team across the years, people who state 'meh it's because of his team" are plain retards. Device is top #2 in 2019 and Zywoo is top #1, simple is top #4 at best

Perfect example of how people misunderstand the game/players. You don't have to go big when your team plays well. Device played into tournament grand finals/major finals, those frags matter more than group/playoffs. I think s1mple/zywoo fans are the people that play well in MM, get top fragger and believe they're the best. Well, its a team game. Being top fragger with a loss means nothing at the end of the day. Consistently clicking heads, getting MVPs and winning tournaments/winning majors trumps any other individual performance tbh.

Yeah, Dev1ce is hugely important to his team despite not being nearly as good as ZywOo and S1mple. I definitely think he would deserve top 1 for 2019, but I guess the raw stats of ZywOo and S1mple still trump Dev1ce's achievements according to HTLV.

idk why comparison fucks the numbers up but hltv.org/stats/players/7592/device?start.. hltv.org/stats/players/7998/device?start.. its almost the same and s1mple has a way higher rating so his impact should also be higher, just like zywoo :)

s1mple won one event this year one mvp, zywoo won 3 or 4 events 5 mvps, device won the most events 3 mvps... explain how s1mple can be higher ranked? btw if zywoo is trash with other weapons than awp, why does he have the best fpl stats where he isnt even awping most of the time(s1mple isnt even close when it comes to fpl stats)

xD zywoo has been farming stats on faceit way before he even joined fpl, please enough with the retarded comments. What do faceit stats have to do with this even? MVPS and events won are almost irrelevant since the top player title is about individual performance. 5 players won these events, not 1. Thats why rating is the most important stat. How does it matter if a team won something? Tricked won V4 this year, this means Tricked players > s1mple? pls

The way they determine who is the best in the world is bullshit, so even though you and your team win to majors and 4 big event's in 2019 you can't get #1. But yes let's choose the players who have the highest stats but can't win trophies.

Zywoo won trophies and a lot of mvps this year so it's deserved for him but s0.93mple was literally rubbish after starseries, even throwing tournaments at times. Zywoo was consistent the whole year like Device, both deserve top 1. For me Device is #2 this year and Zywoo #1 but simple certainly isn't even top #3

Doesn't matter how much big tournament players won. Are they are majors, IEM, ESL Pro league... What individual performance? That from s1mple, 6 months without playing, or that from ZyWoO, carrying 4 baiters. Now I know why NBK- left Vitality, ALEX start baiting for ZyWoO and NBK- disagreed. If you consider individual performance KSCERATO, coldzera, fer, Stewie2k, rain and many others should be in top 20, and EliGE would be top 1.

Zywoo won multiple events this year, s0.3mple only won starseries at the very beginning of the year. Zywoo won events across the year don't compare s0.3mple to Zywoo in 2019. Zywoo should be first and Device #2. Zywoo actually said he could very well see Device as top #1 in 2019 (knowing it could be him as well). But hltv is bullshit, playing literally three big events isn't enough to be top 2, especially when you're underwhelming 2 out of the 3, simple doesn't deserve top 2 in 2019

use your brain. it's easy to farm good stats when you don't get to play good opponents and don't go deep in the tournaments. this year basically s1mple farmed stats in group stage against weak opponents and couldn't do shit against good teams in playoffs. last year he was no doubt number 1 player, this year probably even elige should have been higher than him.

Oh dude I get you, I’m just showing the stats on HLTV as a means to show you why they rated him this. Dedicated players and gamers follow CS:GO all year and we know that Device had deeper tournament runs and more overall wins in bigger matches, bigger situations with more pressure. But that doesn’t change the reality that overall S1mple actually out performed Device STATISTICALLY.

that's my whole point. you don't count only on stats because without playing against top teams and going deep into the tournaments it means nothing. you can 0/8 all you want brainless kid, but farming stats in groupstage against trash teams versus finishing all the tournaments at least in top4 can't compare.

well you made an example of how Zywoo apparently should've been #1 because he had better stats, but he literally had 0 games at major tournaments.. while s1mple played at major tournaments and has better stats than dev1ce just because dev1ce has better team around him that help him win tournaments doesn't mean he's better individually than s1mple.. and he clearly isn't oh and btw s1mple has better stats against top5 and top10 opponents as well.. so nice try

I get you, I guess it’s just easier for HLTV to figure out the ranking. Call it laziness even, but if you could just filter some names and create a top 20 list would you do it that way or deep-dive for hours and probably not even get paid much?

Yeah I def could see that due to s1mple's lack of success this year ( and navi generally being extremely quiet throughout the year), I guess it's personal bias on my side cause I am such a Navi fanboy. But I just honestly can't see Zywoo being above either s1mple or device, personally.

S1mple and Zywoo did great on the first half of the year, but they where not there (consistency) on the second half, compared to Device who win everything, mvp, regular on top stats... His plays are not that fancy, but he's the best.

Think about what criteria you are using to put dev1ce above s1mple.... If you apply that criteria across the board, then zywoo wouldn’t even be top 3, much less first. You can’t have dev1ce above s1mple AND have zywoo first. That’s highly contradictory.

That's bullshit because Zywoo has the highest number of mvps, Device has more mvps than s1mple too, just like Elige and better stats in Big events than s0.93mple against the top 5 this year. S1mple this year is at best #4
2020-01-19 00:51

Zywoo has two big event MVPs and one of them is questionable as the playoff was small and tbe opposition was bad. Vitality missed a lot of tournaments also. If dev1ce is above s1mple because of team achievements, then he’s above zywoo also. If dev1ce is below zywoo because of individual performance, then he’s below s1mple also. As I said, you can’t use one set of criteria to put zywoo first, and then move the goalposts to put dev1ce above s1mple. While HLTV haven’t necessarily been consistent with previous years, they’ve been consistent throughout this list. And the way they’ve done THIS list, there is no way dev1ce is above s1mple... or even elige for that matter.

Zywoo has 4 big events MVPs + 1 tier 3 MVP not 2 i believe while S1mple only got 1 (Dev1ce 1 Major MVP; 2 Tier 2 MVPs). Zywoo only has 7 maps less than Dev1ce in term of big events while S1mple is down 26 maps in comparision (100-126). Zywoo was consistently carrying his team almost every game this year while S1mple struggle a bit at early and mid year. In term of team achievement, Vitality got 3 trophies while Na`Vi only got 1 this year (Astralis got 6 trophies including 2 Majors). Do you need more stats?

The problem being they don't give any info on how they did the ranking nor how one thing prevails on another. How can you be in the top 20 if your team is garbage then ? For that matter, both individual and team achievements count and for both Zywoo and Device are above s1mple, so does Elige. The individual performance of Zywoo outweighs the team achievements from Device this year because Vitality was quite successful in 2019 too so was Astralis obviously. Na'Vi stopped being relevant after Starseries and the same for simple, he was underwhelming even. There's no way you could be that underwhelming and being top 2. The amount of maps and the opposition should be accounted for. And Zywoo has 5 official MVPs in 2019 you can't deny any of it. simple has one MVP total too you can't deny facts.

In addition, woxic, the player who made them go to the Major won the match alone by taking many clutches against Sprout, they have become this after winning the first cup in China, and they received the cup thanks to the amazing clutches of woxic. A player who has had the biggest share in the rising of mouz in 2019, make sure that his ambition is not in most players, he will do much more.

I think Device should be ranked higher, because CS:GO is all about team work. I know this list ranks players on their individual performances, but even if Device has slightly worse individual stats than S1mple, he should rank higher because it's a team sport, and device is a better team player with more impact, which was one of the reasons for Astralis dominance this year.

Hltv is actually pissing me the tf off this year. S1mple should’ve been 4 at the highest based off THIS YEARS STATS yet here we are with the bias at its peak and putting him at 2 because they can’t get their head out of his A$$ and actually do the correct rankings. EliGe and device both had better years then S1mple and I’m not even a hater of the guy, I’m just so pissed they can’t get the rankings right. Such fking bias.

How on earth s1mple is above device when navi only played ten maps the whole year against the astralis multi-champion team? I know is about individual skills but cmon THREE MAJORS IN A ROW + 100000 TOURNAMENTS!

So we should never look who their teams play against? Yes s1mple has better rating but that's because hes literally farming teams like forze and heroic in groupstages while Device is playing top 5 teams in semis and finals? So XANTARES Top 1 next year?

Bro wtf he should at least be 2nd if not 1st, he is the best preforming player by a good distance on easily the best team of the year, he won 2 majors and got a major MVP a long side a bunch of other MVPs.

Bro, winning two majors is a team achievement. The major MVP is an individual one, true, but the difference in rating 2.0 of 0.06 was just too huge

It's cause device essentially only plays against the best in the world and has a team that also performs to a high level, zywoo plays against a slightly weaker level of opponent on average with a team that can't frag for shit so only sets up for him.

Kinda ridiculous double standard from hltv. s1mple above device cause of pure stats, yet players of lower ranked teams that don't play the big matches (just like s1mple this year) have no chance of even being in the top 20 (huNter- for example).

unreal that device ends this year below s1mple Skipping events, farming group stages and bombing out in quarters with an high ranking > have a fairly close rank but achieving it while playing finals constantly, actually helping the team win tournaments and playing a lot vs top 5 teams all year long

It's really ironic to think that kennyS got #6 in the past while being clearly a top 3 player (I would dare to say n1 in titan tbf) and the arguments for it was that he wasn't playing finals and his team was doing poor.

hltv.org/stats/players?startDate=2014-01.. Totally different criteria now, for sure. That was the last year they actually valued stats other than individual LAN/big events rating. I don't think kennyS should have been #1 back then(and fortunately he wasn't), just like I don't think s1mple should be #2 or #1 this year. It's a 5v5 game. This ranking really went downhill after 2014-2015. It's like they are ranking FPL players now But yeah if you apply the current criteria to 2014, kennyS would easily be #1

I'm clearly not I've watched every event of the year, even shitty qualifiers like MDL, also the useless global challenge so I'm not ^^ you're ukranian/russian so that's a biased quirk for you dog. I don't care about Device, I don't care about s1mple and I don't really care about Zywoo; it's just that when something is wrong you gotta say it and this feels wrong, I compared stats, achievements after epicenter and there's no way s0.93mple isn't remotely close to Device in 2019 because out of the top 3 he has the least amount of MVPs ( only one) and the least amount of EVPs . Ain't that individual performances or is that part of the "team achievements" excuse that's been popular on Device since last year ? Well lmao just shows how Kennys in 2015 had the best stats but was only #6, just like both s1mple and Dev1ce had better stats in 2016 but didn't get placed well; I guess the hltv is changing from one year to another and there's not even a topic on it. Oh btw I know you've got trouble speaking other langages but make sure not to forget the article in your sentences, otherwise I might think you're talking about yourself m8, have a great one.

+1 people can call me a fanboi but he always showed up vs top teams in crucial times like 3rd map. He carried Astralis when it was needed + they don't set him up in the same manner as s1mple or zywoo are being set up. Sure, the two mentioned before are more skilled mechanically but tactic wise and in some cases impact wise device is above all. Such a great player, hopefully this year he'll receive #1 to consolidate his status as a GOAT.

I just wanna say hello to all S1mple's haters. Your shitposts against S1mple will never change HLTV's analysis towards his in-game results and his afforts. So you were just literally wasting your time with trashtalking on S1mple all these years. HLTV.org is and probably will be my favorite place in terms of news, statistics and other aspects. You guys just proved to the World once again, that you're totally unbiased and I'm proud of being long time user of your website. Thanks for your work, I wanna say thanks to all News makers, admins and for sure unbiased experts who just ignore all these incompetent, hating kids. You guys are forever professionals for me! :) P.S. And for idiots who cannot use simple facts, logic and math/statistics, try to do it. ;)

I'm honestly starting to dislike HLTV ranking, it's too focused on stats and that doesn't paint the whole picture when in it comes to the best player. If you look at prizes on sports it doesn't work that way and shouldn't be the case on CS neither. You can't abstract players from everything except stats and judge who's best from there.

Try to understand the difference between "Team achievements" and "Individual achievements / performances" and your life will be much easier. ;) And you will for sure understand how HLTV's ranking system works all these years. If the player is playing in high tier1 level, then he can be in top1-3 easily. That is how it should be and how it works.

I understand how it works (I've been on HLTV for a really long time), but I don't like it and on every sport individual awards are heavily influenced by team achievements. Messi would have won a lot more stuff if stats are the only thing that matters in football for example, but no matter his numbers he won shit everytime Barcelona ended up the year empty handed. Say that S1mple is the best group stage player if you want, he almost doesn't know what finals or even semis are. I would even acknowledge that S1mple is probably the most skilled player, but his stats are worthless compared to Device and the kind of matches he had to play to get his numbers.

Sure, losing in quarters everytime he faced though opposition. Don't make me laugh. HLTV ranking is fucked and unreal when you compare it to how this kind of awards work on real sports, that's just a fact. If you don't know how the world works beyond HLTV that's up to you.

Again and again you're trying to use Team achievements as an argument. Do you just ignore the fact that Na`Vi changed their roster, S1mple changed his role and many other things happened. So they were struggling for sure. So using "he lost many times in quarter finals" is not a good argument, isn't it clear enough?

The point is that's actually a good argument, even if HLTV doesn't care about it to make their ranking. But to me their ranking is fucked so I don't actually give a fuck about their process, since it's completely wrong to me. Just accept the fact that I, like a lot more if you look at comments don't like how HLTV does its ranking and disagree with it. You can't change that, like I can't change the placements on it.

HLTV.org doesn't care about some incompetent kids who just "like this" and "dislike that". They made this decision based on something, you know? And they wrote everything in these articles. Like it or dislike it, but facts are facts. And since these kids cannot use proper argument for their "grudge", their criticism is just useless here. You can say "I'm not happy that the World is round", but it won't change anything.

So mad dude... Wtf? Learn how to argue properly first, then try it. You should have some arguments and counter-arguments for your opponents' statement and so on. Google it if it is so hard for you. But using weak insults just shows how bad you're at arguing and how false your opinion is...

Because it is a rating of the best players, not the best teams. MVPs are mostly team achievement and are less important than players' general performance on high tier1 level for whole year. S1mple was clearly 2nd best player in 2019 after ZywOo. it is not that hard to understand their logic.

yeah skipping tournaments, quitting in groups and being worse than last year is #2 spot? s1mple always had good stats but he never was placed as high because of bad achievements and suddenly hltv system becomes rigged towards slightly higher stats even though it isn't how it works it count's every EVP/MVP and amount of played games dev1ce played a lot more and was by far the best astralis player during their slump he was robbed i'd say that even electronic > s1mple this year

Yeah it's not that hard to understand. Simple farming stats at groupstage vs tier 2-3 teams and not reaching the playoffs will make his stats more higher coz of maps played. Stats divided by #of maps played = better rating. Imagine if navi have played same maps as astralis, do you think simple will always get high stats vs in the likes of top 5 teams? Cmon man. Basic math just got too hard to understand?

OK so by your logic every player should have EXACTLY THE SAME amount of maps and if someone has less, then he is out of competition, right? :o So let's just ignore his performance in 2019, because he has less maps... (not that much less if you count big events to be honest).

I think that if u put device in navi and s1mple in astralis, the first one will not be able to do anything and will play his games with bad kd against top teams while s1mple will show his skill even higher,im not a fan of s1mple but the individual level of the player is the meaning of this rating

last year shows a different story though this na'vi lineup without zeus/edwar is more skilled and s1mple's stats already aren't as good as before and then again. gla1ve's structure doesn't need high-risk high reward awper and s1mple might not fit passive playstyle

Don't give a fuck about his success with the team, the credit is not only for him, but also for the team. In the top, people enter by individual skill and if the device has it worse than the simple or zywoo, why should it be higher than them in the rating. Wake up, fools. INDIVIDUAL SKILL. Compare today its characteristics with the 1st and 2nd place and forget about the achievements with the team.

exactly, isn't EVP and MVP part of the individual performances lol ? Like simple has like one evp and one mvp while Device has 3 MVPs and evps while Zywoo has 5 MVPs and some evps. Both accounting Astralis' and Vitality's success is self explanatory as both won many tournaments, astralis ending up winning both majors. How come both Astralis number one team in 2019 and Vitality number three in 2019 have both players with the most MVPs and simple with one tournament win and a team outside the top 10 for 70% of the year gets top #2. Robbery in broad daylight.

+1 Lmao this cocksucking simple fangirls are so hilarious that they don't even consider other facts like map counts and etc. Always saying better rating, rating my ass. Farming stats at tier 2-3 teams and not getting into playoffs will surely give you better stats coz of less map counts to be divided in stats calculation. Thank you for showing how stupid you are at class.

ELiGE and devve constantly carrying their teams in semis, finals of majors, big events, getting mvps, evps, playing in more high stake matches, never choking always reliable oh but I guess s1mple farming +30 vs BIG and MIBR in groups then going barely positive while losing 1-2 in quarters is more impressive

The best player in the world is Zywoo and Device was #2 in 2019 but I do agree the ranking is fucked up and flawed, simple is top #4 at best probably in 2019 considering the amount of maps against lower opposition. Only one tournament win, only one mvp, only two evps throughout the year is a robbery in broad daylight. Device has 3 mvps, evps , which is 3x times as much, Zywoo has 5 Mvps and has one or two evps with 4 tournament wins and one final in Cologne.

If you look at impacts for their team, event victorys and finals they have reached there can no other than Device or Elige standing at the top, but as i said before i dont need HLTV Awards to tell who´s the best is, i just look at the teams that have won the most this year, and thats Team Liquid and Astralis by miles.

Well is it though ? Liquid lasted 2 months ( even little less if you cut the break) ; Astralis was in a slump after the first major win and came back only for the second major pretty much losing to Liquid or Vitality. For the middle part of the year Liquid was #1, Vitality #2 ... surely Liquid has won more during their peak but Vitality has won events across the entire year, doesn't it count also? Talking about impact, Zywoo has made impact for his team, he's 1rst, 2nd and 3rd places no matter the tournament

I'd argue that both Elige and Device have been robbed, deep runs in loads of tournaments with MVP's & EVP's for them both and somehow this doesn't count ???? How is playing more maps vs better opposition not a factor ?

I can only explain it by saying it costs too much work for the hltv ranking makers to take into account these factors fairly and objectively. Because your right it does matter and should put simple below eliege and device because he played less opposition.

And is that enough of a factor to consider device #2 ? What if dev1ce is actually in a dominant team that allows him to get more easy frag on eco rounds, does that make him a better player ? There's plenty of reasons to consider s1mple #2, now stop blindly sticking to your opinion and try to actually think, thank you Oh and you should be happy, dev1ce robbed #1 play of the year

2020-01-19 14:58

Have you watched those tight games ? there arent much easy frags at the TOP competition man. Sure some but a lot is also due to his playstyle not being flashy. so stop complaining and actually take those important factors into account. Device played tougher opposition yes simple has a worse team if he was #5 he would already have been compensated for that fact by good individual performance. I think it just costs too much work for the hltv ranking makers to take into account these factors fairly and objectively. More factors is more work. The factors they did try to include for player like xyp9X is wonderful. but they let it slide for players like eliege and device a bit too much if you ask me. Or boosted simple too much. just a matter of how you look at it. the outcome should be the same. simple below eli3ge and device.

Device skill, game play, entry frags, clutches if you compare with others, he can't even be in top 20. Dupreeh, xyp9x, magisk carry the team always. Watch close matches, important rounds are won by these 3 and not device. He is noob awper, misses even basic awp shots. People I don't want to say much here, most of his frags are e eco frags or easy kills. He hardly does entry or clutches. Simple game sense and zywoo skill ate seriously tough to handle. Even Niko said in interview that nah device won't be in top 5. Hltv. Organisation don't analyse things properly. Anyways zywoo would be no 1 and simple. 2nd It makes sense.

Im a huge fan of Simple Honestly , when you think about what kind of opponents device faced in 2019..and what kinda performances he had against them.. There’s no way either Simple or Zywooo could be considered a better player than device Simple didn’t play much Zywoo had a similar problem — didn’t play enough big tournaments.. You need to shine in the biggest tournaments ,against the best opponents to be considered the best. What a joke To score 30 goals in the Dutch league is not the same as to score 25 goals in the English premium league .....not even close

"MUH HE HAD LOWER RATING THAN DADDY S1MPLE" Yes, but you he had 26 more maps played, 55 more against top5 and 10 more big events finals than s1mple (s1mple didn't even reach a big final in 2019). s1mple in general faced against a much weaker and lesser prepared opponent than device. That's like saying Morten "Duncan" Rasmussen (Danish topscorer in superligaen) is better than Harry Kane, since he scored 145 goals in total in superligaen, while Harry Kane only mastered 144 goals in premier league.

Same shit happens everywhere, raw stats based on subjective calculation. Thats why, lot of fans don't have a feeling of fair ranking. OK , Simple lost almost every single big match this year, besides the fact flamie, electronic and even boombl4 playing out of his minds on some events. The most meaningful stats in team games should be something supported by team achievement. When James Harden got MVP of NBA, everyone screaming how good is he, but the fact is whole his effort supporting only his own stats. Everyone will agree that Zywoo was phenomenal and maybe he deserving first spot, but come on, Simple just didn't do anything to get 2nd spot.

ROFL. So let's review: - 26 more maps played - WAY more games played and won against top 5 teams and TL, the second best team of 2019 - Did not just farm tier 2-3 teams in groups, constantly made playoffs and clashed with the best - 3 MVP's, 1 of which a major (something s0mple only dreams of) - 7 EVP's But Hltv's like: ''DERR, BUT HE HADZ 0.05 RATING LOWER *sucks off s1mple* '' And that's the story behind top 2 and 3. Fucking retards, take a note from FIFA and how they award their Ballon d'Or's. Lewandowski has like 4 more goals than Messi and is the top scorer of 2019, YET HE'S FUCKING 8TH, while Messi is top 1... because he and his team achieved way more and against tougher competition. Stats are far from the only thing that counts when comparing individuals, which is probably a foreign concept to the idiots who keep repeating ''it's individual ranking, not team-based!!!111!!'', and apparently to hltv as well. Both device AND Elige deserved to be above s1mple. Both were extremely consistent, played their role in their team flawlessly, and even despite the fact that Astralis and Liquid are the two most skilled teams of all time, those two players STILL stood out among all of that talent, which is way more impressive than s0mple farming group bots. Garbage placing.

Not a mad kid at all. Makes very well thought out relevant points. Fact is both Elige and Device deserve 2 & 1 placing going by a more sensible criteria. Real top 5 should be Magisk, S1mple, ZywoO, ELiGe and Dev1ce. If MVP's & EVP's of Big Events don't matter in the rankings, then why bother to make a big deal about these awards at all ?

That's a good question now that you point it out, so really S1mple should be 5th and Magisk 4th ? Ohh you're right !! Magisk has an MVP from IEM Katowice and 10 EVP's !! So yes, I've made a stupid mistake, plz forgive me. One other thing, I don't dislike S1mple at all, he's stunning when he gets going but this year he hasn't had as many big tourny runs compared to last year... Damm i've really fuxked up, Magisk has an MVP from a Major.... By my own reckoning that should rank him higher, say 2nd. Does the Major count in your mind ? For me the Major's are everything, they players who turn up on those stages are the best in the world.

Honestly, i am bamboozaled by the criteria that HLTV.org uses to calculate which player is the best in the world right now.... I do not understand how MVP's & EVP's at big event's DO NOT PLAY A ROLE in the way that HLTV.org calculates which player is better than the others in a particular year... If anyone from HLTV Staff would care to offer a credible explanation as to why these awards do not matter I'm all ears. Until then, this entire ranking is horseshit imho !

Actually there is no way to fairly decide who deserves top1 more. Zywoo imo is better at game mechanics, his movement seems perfect, spray, crosshair placement is so consistent, while simple is more on the fly player. It seems he can pull plays out of nowhere, and he does have insane reflexes, however his play style sometimes looks a bit "shaky". Im picking simple for the 1st just because he is from east xD but in reality they both deserve top spot. Device is an outstanding player, he is solid 3rd, but surely not above simple or zywoo. His value to a team is insane, but keep in mind that majority of his teammates fall into top20 too, so he's playing for a better team. This is top 20 players, not top 20 teams

Agreed it's Top 20 Players, so why doesn't MVP of a Major count ? Isn't the Major the highest tier of competition ? Do MVP of other Highly Valued comp's matter, do EVP's of other Highly Valued comps matter ? The Criteria that HLTV.Org uses is Flawed/Incorrect, in short a huge mistake. How can a player that plays fewer maps vs lower Tier Opposition be better than a player who does very well vs a much higher caliber Opposition ? Do Majors matter at all ? If they do, then you must consider who had the deeper runs and what sort of Oppo's they faced... If they don't then we can get rid of all the MVP / EVP Stuff. Am sure that would make sense to everyone... One other thing if you don't mind... Team Liquid have made many deep runs and their Players have been outstanding vs higher tier teams (EliGe for example has Monster'ed most of the Top Tier Teams this year), so why aren't their Players Ranked higher ? If MVP's and EVP'd don't count then why give them out ? Can ANYONE explain this to me, honestly, I don't see any logic to it. This ranking system by HLTV.Org does not make sense to me.

I have no hate for S1mple. I only have awe ! The way he play's this game is insane, is totally sick the things he does to other players when he gets the chance! But there is the problem in my eyes, not getting to play Semi-Finals & Finals, let alone winning them ! How can you be considered the best when you have not reached these Finals / Semi-Finals ? It's like saying he's the best MMA Fighter of this year, who has not faced a Champion Tier fight this year.... Only have a huge problem with this years HLTV Ranking cause it doesn't make sense to me....

Navi in 2019 : Tournaments won : 1, Astralis won : 7, MVP this year S1mple : 1, Device : 3, of ALL time S1mple : 9, Device : 15. In the end, just look at the facts S1mple pure skill-wise is better than device, but he can't help his team wins tournament as device or Zywoo does for that matters... HLTV change the way of rating players because right now this is a joke seriously...

Device not being top1 is an absolute joke not even a fan of astralis and I can say he was without a doubt the most dominant player of the year highlights ain't everything

The best contribute from hltv for having a trash ranking... When you realize that your stats are only individual and, a player performance translated in actual results for his team have no added value at all. So, unless dupreeh and glave coming for position 1 & 2, it will be the final statement that a player, as individual playing and performing on a team and contributing for results actively, has no collective value for his rank. Sad...

#3 - #20 is the real top 18. s1mple hasn't won a major, or a tier 1 event in who knows how long. he couldn't manage it with liquid and hasn't found it with navi. zywoo ... well vitality were only playing teir 1 teams for 8 months of the year losing to cr4zy, movie star riders < who? if device didn't perform Astralis wouldn't have been so dominant, wouldn't have won 3 majors in a row and 4 in total. glaive should have been in the top #20 also. not sure how 2 players who struggle to win anything can make top #5

Top 3 getting more comments than Top 1 + Top 2. Talk about controversial.

3 is all the more remarkable considering the other two didn't have to sit next to a guy who is terrified of washing his moon crater face, Dev1ce should get an award for putting up with the smells coming from his vile teammate, why can't his parents step in and say "Hey Magisk, why don't you have a little wash today"
