BIG win DreamHack Open Leipzig over Renegades

In the offline debut of their new roster, BIG claimed the title at DreamHack Open Leipzig defeating Renegades in the grand final 2-0.

The German side came into the tournament as the lowest-ranked team, sitting in 46th place, but went through the tournament without dropping a single map to claim the title. This is their first tournament win since ESEA MDL Global Challenge Season 27 in May of 2018.

The grand final was the rematch of the Group A winners' match, where BIG was victorious, 16-8, on Nuke. That map was banned out in the BO3, with the German side selecting Mirage to start off. It was Renegades who had a 4-1 lead at the beginning, but then Ismailcan "⁠XANTARES⁠" Dörtkardeş' double entry with the Deagle on an eco turned things around.

BIG took control of the half, trading kills effectively to get control of bombsites and forcing the Australians to save time and time again. Nine out of the next 10 rounds went their way, with the style becoming more individualistic as BIG gained momentum. After a 10-5 half, Johannes "⁠tabseN⁠" Wodarz and co. picked up the second half pistol and powered on to a dominant 16-5 win on Mirage.

BIG won their first LAN since ESEA Global Challenge in May 2018

Similarly to on Mirage, Renegades picked up a 3-0 lead on Dust2 before BIG started causing issues on the full buy rounds. Their offenses were unstoppable to Renegades round after round, with Nils "⁠k1to⁠" Gruhne leading the charge for the Germans. He resolved a 2v2 in his team's favor to make it 8-4, with BIG riding that wave to an impressive 11-4 T-half finish.

Christopher "⁠dexter⁠" Nong and co. didn't give up, though, claiming the pistol and winning the first gun round to chain five rounds together, 11-9. The Australians extended that streak to equalize the scoreline, but that is when BIG bounced back and won a crucial 2v4 to stay ahead (13-11). The match was neck-and-neck, but BIG's low-buy win brought them on to map point and XANTARES closed out the series with a triple kill to make it 16-12, 2-0 for BIG.

By winning the tournament, BIG have also qualified for DreamHack Masters Jönköping, the first DreamHack Masters event that takes place in June.

i was sceptical of BIG before the tournament and even until they were in the grand final. but they showed good teamplay, a very controlled approach to the game on the server and nice individual skill from everyone. overall they developed a pretty satisfying playstyle in the short time they had to prepare for this tournament. if they keep improving and developing like this they are a team to watch out for this year and i definitely want to see more of them! Nice to see k1to has serious potential too and maybe it'll be good for XANTARES not to have the expectation of carrying on his shoulders and let k1to, tabseN and syrson take the pressure off him. Hopefully it'll just make him play even better and he'll get back to scary AK XANTARES mode. Promising looking team anyway.

syrsoN is so underrated as a sniper. He is amazing. tiziaN did amazing kills also, his headshots were spectacular. I cannot say that it was one-man-show. For sure tabseN and k1to stepped up at the end, but all 5 guys were playing reat. XANTARES did important kills at dust2.

XANTARES is getting better German everyday. He was the top fragger on mirage in the grand final.
