SicK retires from competitive play

Hunter "SicK" Mims has announced that he will turn his attention to Riot Games' upcoming tactical shooter, Valorant, ending a five-year-long competitive career in CS:GO.

In his announcement tweet, the 21-year-old revealed that stepping back from competitive Counter-Strike was an inevitable move for him as he feels that the game had become "incredibly stale and tedious." He has been active since 2015, rising to prominence in North America following stints on Denial, TSM, Misfits, Rogue, and Complexity.

During his career, SicK took part in the Major Main Qualifier for ELEAGUE Boston, FACEIT London, and StarLadder Berlin, exiting all three tournaments in 12-14th place. Individually, his most notable event came early on during his rise, helping TSM to a 3-4th place finish at the ECS Season 1 Finals in June 2016 by averaging a 1.23 rating following wins over Astralis and Cloud9.

SicK ends his five-year-long CS:GO career at the age of 21

The American talent was once heralded as one of the hottest prospects from the next generation of North American CS:GO players, alongside his teammate at the time, Russel "Twistzz" Van Dulken, but was overshadowed over time as the Canadian player's form skyrocketed and SicK's cooled off.

In recent months, following his release from Complexity, SicK became a journeyman, making appearances as a stand-in for a handful of different rosters. His final appearance came as a part of Chaos in Flashpoint 1, where he averaged a 1.00 rating over 16 maps before the team were knocked out in 7-8th place.

I don't think so. Since the skill cieling in Valorant is much lower than in CSGO, you can more or less never go from Valorant to CSGO, no matter what happens to Valorant.

Frok playing valorant, I dont think the skill ceiling in valorant is lower than cs, as it is much more aim oriented (if you dont hit a hs, you die). the skill floor is lower though, due to the abilities of each character.

No one need the game that will be hard to play on good level. Only pro cs players can cry that Valorant is easy because they spend their whole life learning sprays and how to throw grenades in cs. And it hurts them that someone who not spend so much time in the game can win vs them. Also pro players it's about 1% or less from all players of any game. Most people play for fun and they don't care that some game easier then another.

From what I've heard, I think it just is "bigger bullets" and simpler movement and aim mechanics than CSGO got. For casuals, that is great, but for the skill ceiling of an Esports, it is bad.

if ppl say so. its also included that the netcode is much better than in csgo. if you hit the head - its a headshot. so, good player get a much higher reward. there is not a high number of rng included.

yeah, it could affect that. Hit reg might just be better, might also be a result of the anti-peek-code I dunno what it is, but csgo players think it is easier to hit the targets in Valorant.
2020-04-22 12:37

Actually no, in cs much easier get kill while moving, that is almost impossible in valorant. And you need to hit head or you'll need 5-6 bullets in body even with a good rifle

it is nearly impossible to hit anything while moving in CSGO. You could barely hit a barn while running in CSGO. But I dunno, I don't play Valorant and it doesn't interest me.

In cs you can crouch moving and do strafes, in Valorant it's kinda impossible cause they'll hit you first. And, idk, but in cs I killed a lot of people while moving, just stop a bit before shoot and that's all, he's done.
2020-04-22 12:41

but isn't that what they talk about? Shooting a strafeing oponent is easier. That doesn't really sound like movement or aim mechanics but the fix to the anti-peekers-advantage stuff they implemented. Strafing and crouch-moving are just things in CSGO to counter the ping issues and the server issues. It is something the players have adopted to counter some flaws from the old code. it isn't really features that the devs planned on in 2011, working on this game. It is just game mechanics we've found out and therefore utilized into the meta.

The pros you seen were playing against other pros? If not, of course it was easier for them to get kills if they were playing against people that maybe never played a shooter before. Probably it was the same as if they were playing against silvers in cs.

In CS u play against pros who have been playing the game for years. In Valorant you play CS pros who have never played the game before. So you're obviously gonna find it easier to frag in valorant.

its easier if you have better aim than the oponent not on csgo since hitboxes sucks and people just run and spray
2020-04-23 00:51

Valorant needs more aim? In what way? Right now you see people only getting headshots because crouching isn't a thing in that game. Have you even tried it my guy? You can't crouch in Valorant as it's so fucking slow that you're already dead by the point when you actually crouch. CSGO has a lot more uneven ground, so good aim is easier to notice, whereas Valorants ground is quite flat for the most of it, so as long as you aim head level, you usually headshot people.
2020-04-22 09:23

I dont think valorant needs any more aim than csgo, but i dont think it requires less. as another user mentioned, the valorant's netcode rewards headshots and therefore good players more consistently than csgo. Another thing is that spraying at a long distance in valorant is a lot less viable than in csgo, since you have to burn through 150hp and the spray patterns are noticably more erratic in valorant. Comparably to csgo, there is also the skill of learning lineups with various characters (and i would argue slightly more learning here, since theres more utility than just smokes flashes and mollies). Where I think csgo rewards better skill is in its movement, since you can jiggle peak, run boost and bhop in cs, where these things are virtually impossible in valorant, which makes the game easier for new players to pick up, hence a lower skill floor. To make up for this, learning the individual abilities of all 10+ characters pushes valorants skill ceiling to what i believe is equal to csgos.
2020-04-22 16:53

Your reasoning to why spraying is less viable in Valorant is ass, have you tried the guns in there? The firerate is so bad on the rifles, that you're better off trying to hit headshots than a full on body spray. And once again, crouching just doesn't work in that game, so as long as you hold your crosshair at head level, you will get kills, it's just how it is.

Can I just say quickly that I agree with what you said so much. I was talking with some mates about how little movement matters in Valorant, your point about headshots at long range makes a lot of sense too. Didn't think of it like the skill floor was being lowered but that's exactly whats happened. It made me laugh when I realised cause that what Riot did with LoL, the skill ceiling from DotA was lowered slightly but the skill floor in Valorant, LoL and legends of runeterra is also lower meaning more casual players can compete = more money for Riot. I'm guessing that the balancing act of having good aim vs ability usage/ understanding will set the difference apart from Csgo pros to Valorant pros.

With enough money on table even something as terrible as Overwatch can become esport. I prefer csgo because it's simple and easy to watch. I can imagine in few years there will be over 20 agents in Valorant, each with distinct abilities. Good luck watching it. It won't be such clusterfuck as OW, but still mess imo.

When I said pumping money into it I didn't just mean for like prize pools I mean for like development better servers anti cheat etc like Valve is finally deciding to upgrade to source 2 over the summer just because they finally have some competition and Riot is probably going to Franchise the game like LoL anyways offering players a salary that I'd think would fare better than CS due to them not having 3rd party event organizers like ESL so in the end if Sick lands himself on a Valorant team at the pro level he will probably have a more secure future financially rather than CSGO where he's probably shit out of luck to get a good team and now's the time to make the switch while the game is in closed beta and you can make your mark on the scene early

all these games with abilities + ult come to a stale meta, so developer keeps changing it all the time. not a single exception

OW died not because of a stale comp meta, but because the balance team couldnt decide which foot they wanted to balance the game on. With some balance choices they favored abilities and comboing well above the gunplay, and on others they favored the gunplay far more. You can certainly have a shooter thats also built around abilities like a moba, but you need to make an important decision on what you are going to build around for your balancing decisions. For all its faults (and there are many) R6 decided very early on that they would balance around the gunplay more strongly than the abilities. Whenever they talk about things being overpowered its usually when they make the abilities too strong for good gunplay to prevail. EX: Lion's ability suffocated gunplay and the ability to outplay it; Pulse's scanner swap time not leaving room for good counter play with gamesense and gunplay; etc. With OW they buff one hero with gunplay in mind and another with ability synergy in mind and it makes it so that abilities are never balanced around one pillar to look back to and make sure things are consistent. I think Valorant is going to struggle to make that choice because its such a mixing bowl of players from different games that there will always be people with vastly different expectations of how they want to see something balanced.

Better servers as in 128 tick? In CS you might have to use 3rd party services, but if you are at the point of thinking about faceit/esea, you are probably at least a decent player, MM doesn't need 128 tick as worse players don't see the difference usually and even if they do, it's unnecessary, since it won't make them any better 128 tick in Valorant is a waste of money really, it only helps advertise the game Anti Cheat? Yeah nar I'd rather have VAC than Vanguard as an AC in my game Why? Even tho VAC isn't the most efficient, it's still better than an intrusive AC which runs in the bg even when you are not playing, an AC which can create massive logs which can reach up to 260gb in size, an AC which makes your PC run slower and an AC which has kernel access. If you want to have a quality AC taking care of your game, take a note from Faceit. I've encountered only 1 cheater in my 811 games ranging from 1000 to 3000 elo.

Youre implying hes good enough to be on a pro Valorant team, he might be rn but in 6 months or 12 months im not so sure. Theres gonna be a growth of endemic talent and they are gonna replace at least some of the cs rejects in the scene in the long run. Also not like Sick has shown anything impressive in the last couple years, he used to be a sick up and coming talent, but atm hes just another tier 3 NA pro, who wants to make some easy money and fuck over his entire career while hes at it. Unless his motivation spikes now after the switch and he becomes some insanely diligent worker I dont see him succeeding in the long run and after his Valorant career fails where is he gonna go? Back to cs highly unlikely.

Maybe for a while, but if all these tier 2 cs pros can actually get into a good valorant team, theyre gonna come back to cs since I dont see a way where tier 2/3/academy teams in valorant are gonna pay enough or the same as tier 2/3 in cs. At least not during the first 6-12 months, only the top teams will actually earn good money in this time.

Damn, what a shame that SicK didn't get to make a name for himself. I honestly think that he never found the right group of players that fit his personality and play style. He's had the opportunity of playing with many great players, but for whatever reason it just never worked out for him. I hope that he either finds success in Valorant or comes back to CSGO and makes it to the top just like Twistzz has.

Just like Thorin said before, those who are weak and failed to achieve big results in CS will be the first one to give up and go elsewhere where not necessarily they'd be good in the long run! But regardless if he wil lbe good or not, he is looking for an easy way out, cause obviously its going to be much easier to learn the new game with everyone else from the beginning which obviously means everyone would be more or less on the same level in the beginning rather than continuing to work hard and achieve results in the game you were actually good at, but probably lazy and not as motivated as top 20 players in the world maybe :D With that said, we'll see if the motivation helps you achieve big results in a new game! You ahve a good chance since everyone is new there, so shoudl be an easier road for you :)

Guess he wanted to take a head start. Is it confirmed that valorant will be a competitive game with tournaments and all that and are this cs players being bought by riot so that they show that it competes with csgo?

Let's see if Valorant survives the hype, it doesn't feel like a "comp" game at all and Overwatch is already proof that money can't change that.

Makes sense, playing same game always can eventually get boring or simply frustrating, especially if you don't have that right team around you and fail to success. You might as well try your luck in valorant at that point if things seem unlikely to turn around for better.

Honestly he had no luck at all in CS:GO. When he peaked, his team disbanded because players where poached left and right but not him. He was always overshadowed by someone a little bit better. But he deserved some credits aswell that he never received... I would also be tired of the same shit repeating over and over again. Which is sad because he was really good... In the end, I'm sure it did get to him and his skill dropped massively from what he had been showing. GL SicK.

I think it will be like LoL is, Riot will keep it alive and even though it's a casual version of the original (Dota) it won't effect Valve in anyway because they aren't really competing. The way I look at things is Valve could quite literally just buy Riot games, it isn't a competition Valve is way more successful and having Valorant will be good for CS Go because it will force Valve to be more active, people will be leaving, new people need to come in and how do you do that? Can only be good for CS Go. CS Go isn't going anywhere.
