Ryan "⁠freakazoid⁠" Abadir has announced that he has decided to quit CS:GO in order to pursue a career in VALORANT.

The news hardly comes as any surprise after Swole Patrol, having been released from eUnited earlier this year, spent the last two months without support despite the 27-year-old's continued efforts to find an organization to represent.

As a result, the team went on to gradually disintegrate over the course of May, with Victor "⁠food⁠" Wong first announcing his departure to the Riot Games-developed FPS title, before Jordan "⁠Zellsis⁠" Montemurro followed suit and Austin "⁠Cooper⁠" Abadir left the team to further his Counter-Strike career elsewhere.

freakazoid follows food and Zellsis to VALORANT

It's unclear what will happen to the last remaining player of Swole Patrol, Edgar "⁠MarKE⁠" Maldonado, who has yet to comment on his future, as does the coach, Armeen "⁠a2z⁠" Toussi.

North American Counter-Strike has been affected by far the most by the arrival of VALORANT's closed beta. Braxton "⁠swag⁠" Pierce was among the first to announce his move to the new game, followed by a plethora of others, such as Austin "⁠crashies⁠" Roberts, Hunter "⁠SicK⁠" Mims, and the Swole Patrol trio.

Having started to play at a high level in Counter-Strike: Source, freakazoid had a long career in the franchise. In CS:GO, he is perhaps best known for his year-long tenure with Cloud9, with whom he went on a successful streak in the summer of 2015, placing second at three consecutive international events: ESL ESEA Pro League Season 1 Finals, ESWC, and FACEIT League Stage 2 Finals.

I am accurate. I'm talking about the current Swole Patrol, which was eUnited until recently. Nov, 2018 Cooper left Swole Patrol to join eUnited. Then in 2019 he invited Freak to join. Basically felt sorry for him because he didn't have any other offers.

It is, I believe that CS needs to change, mostly on domestic tournaments. I don't know how Valorant is thinking about solving this problem because if they don't, it's the same thing all over again, 40 teams to be invited and the others discarted and struggling to earn money. In my country, they're treating esports as another sports, with it's own federation, news coverage channels, locals tournaments, divisions, even awards at the end of the year like the Oscars. And it's gradually growing. I think that we have the only player on CSGO community to be sponsored by RedBull. The big world org invites should be directly linked to the nations tournaments winners, to promote the country's competitiveness first, and of course, to bring more viewers and revenue.

That's what I'm saying, the top 30/40 teams of the world normally get invites for free, but that don't promote the scene, you first need good competitive challenges on each country and depending on those scores the teams are awarded with invites like the champions league, how things are right now with bo1 qualifications doesn't protect the teams and player's. A lot of luck gets into the equation and it shouldn't be like this. It's awful for a pro player career.

America dominates at every sport it is interested in, as the biggest first world country + genetically diverse + deep rooted sports culture. Have you heard of basketball? Have you watched the Olympics before? The best players in the NFL and NBA are of an insane athletic caliber, it's literally not comparable to soccer (and yes I am a fan and watch a lot of EU soccer). Even an insane athlete like Ronaldo does not stand out at all/slightly pales in comparison to guys like LeBron James, Michael Thomas, etc Soccer is unpopular here as a men's sport. If there were interest in it, we'd easily be #1 in the world, as is the case for our women's team. Just by soccer being one of the top 3 women's sports here, we easily crush every other country in the world, where of course soccer is the top women's sport. Most likely you are a kid who only watches esports, has watched ~20 soccer games in your life, and is aware American football exists but knows none of the rules.

And ofc the vast majority of cricket's fans are in India, so there is an easy case that basketball is the 2nd most popular widespread sport across the world. I guess you haven't heard of athletes like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Kobe Bryant, and Lebron James? Have you heard of the Dream Team? Probably not, since you don't seem to be familiar with the Olympics, where the United States dominates in countless sports. On soccer - again (bad comprehension?) look at our women's soccer team - incredibly dominant. That is what happens when soccer is one of the 3 most popular sports among women in our massive, wealthy country. If soccer weren't extremely unpopular as a men's sport like it is (because basketball, football, baseball, track sports suck up all the top talent), I think it's a fair thing to say that we would stack up A LOT better with SA + Europe where every athletic talent dreams of being a soccer star. On CS being America's most played FPS, did you just make that up, or can you provide a source? I know ZERO people IRL that play CS. Know many that play Fortnite, some CoD, and even some Overwatch. But zero CS.

Valorant will surely won't kill CS. People who played CS will continue playing it. However, CS will stop growing. You have a good example - Quake. People stopped playing the game cuz the skill gap between players was too big. Kids dont want to grind one game for 10k hours to get good at it. They want to compete right away. Valorant is much easier game to "master" in comparison to CS. Also the graphics are more attractive to young players. Also consider how much influence Riot Games has. They still own the largest esports title out there. CS community wont loose much players to Valorant. It's going to struggle to get new players to start playing CS. Give or take 3-5 years and csgo majors will be a memory. Im just curious what will Source2 bring to cs.

Yeah makes sense move from a game where you make 500k minimum a year, to a game where you currently earn money by streaming it (numbers arent even that good anymore now that the key hype is over) and hope that riot will establish a scene relatively soon, thats also big and sustainable. Because if this game takes another 6-9 months till theres an actual scene with orgs and stuff, these people will either have to switch back or work at mcdonalds, which in turn is a big warning sign for anyone wanting to switch.

The NA scene could be in a lot of trouble if this keeps going the way it's currently going. If for example, Stewie was kicked from Liquid or Tarik from EG, there are literally no other NA teams to move to. All of a sudden, you have a big name NA pro making the move to Valorant. The game is in serious trouble.
