Twistzz to leave Liquid, FalleN lined up as replacement - Report

The North American team is reportedly set to bring in the former MIBR in-game leader and AWPer ahead of the 2021 season.

In a post-game interview after the IEM Global Challenge grand final, Russel "⁠Twistzz⁠" Van Dulken revealed that the best-of-five series against Astralis was his last match with the team. According to a report by Rush B Media, Liquid is close to striking an agreement with MIBR regarding the transfer of Gabriel "⁠FalleN⁠" Toledo.

"That was actually my last [match] with Liquid," the Canadian stated. "I hope that I'm back next year in a new home. [...] It was a mutual decision after looking over a couple of things, and I think it's for the best for both sides."

The decision to change players came after the American-Canadian squad ended 2020 with just one title in 15 tournaments. Their season has culminated with an up-and-down campaign in Europe, as Liquid were unable to qualify for the BLAST Premier Fall Finals and exited DreamHack Masters Winter in last place, only ending the year on a good note with a runner-up finish at IEM Global Challenge.

Since the team traveled to the Old Continent in late November to play out the rest of the coronavirus-stricken season against the brunt of the world's best teams, Twistzz has been Liquid's second-lowest-rated player, averaging a 0.97 rating across 23 maps played.

The Canadian has been a part of Liquid for over three and a half years as the organization's second-longest serving member after Jonathan "⁠EliGE⁠" Jablonowski. Sometimes referred to as "the Magician," the 21-year-old helped the North American team clinch ten titles, most of which they won during their dominant run in the first half of 2019, with Twistzz named the ninth-best player in the world that year.

FalleN has spent the last three months on MIBR's bench. In mid-September, the veteran in-game leader and AWPer requested to be removed from the Brazilian starting lineup as a result of the IGC-owned organization's decision to part ways with two of his long-time teammates and coach, Fernando "⁠fer⁠" Alvarenga, Epitacio "⁠TACO⁠" de Melo, and Ricardo "⁠dead⁠" Sinigaglia.

If he completes the switch to Liquid, FalleN will play with a non-Brazilian core for the first time in his career. The move will see him reunite with Jake "⁠Stewie2K⁠" Yip, alongside whom he played in MIBR in the latter half of 2018 and clinched his last title at ZOTAC Cup Masters.

With the Brazilian's signing, Liquid would be getting an in-game leader and an AWPer, two roles that have posed an issue to them since the departure of Nick "⁠nitr0⁠" Cannella earlier this year. Leadership has since fallen on the shoulders of Stewie2K, who has also been sharing AWPing duties with Keith "⁠NAF⁠" Markovic in recent months.

With FalleN's addition, Liquid's lineup would look as follows:

The basic rundown I got was that right now Fallen is just scrimming with them, not even full prac. They were originally gonna make this move over the summer and trade Twistzz to C9 for oSee, but that deal fell through one way or another, and it seems like Vanity was also considered. Ultimately theyre trying to get the IGL and primary awp off of Stewie to let him entry frag.

Not sure I agree with the move but I kind of see why. Stew has always been helping with the IGL roles (helped tarik at c9, nitr0 in the past) so he has a pretty big impact in that sense. I think FalleN's style is quite rigid and not very flexible so they need another leader that can work with him to find a style that works for them, instead of simply implementing FalleN's style and structure directly and I feel like stew is the man that can help the most with that. As for Twistzz leaving, I think it was a mutual decision because TL simply couldn't promise him a star role that he needs to be at his best. FalleN will take over awping duties and stew will probably play as 2nd caller/main support I'm guessing?

Fallen's style is actually the opposite of rigid. In fact, when mibr was struggling and coldzera was in the team, there was a period when coldzera and fallen would share the igl role in some maps because fallen's loose style wasn't working anymore. To be honest, I don't think fallen will join the team to be the igl. Stewie has been doing a good job as we saw in the last tournament and there is a big difference between Brazilian cs and NA cs. I don't think liquid would agree to change the style they are used to play.

I think I may have phrased it confusingly but I meant more that FalleN’s style isn’t very flexible. As in the style itself may be loose, but it’s not very adaptable and quite obviously outdated. I know it was a while back but that’s the main reason stew says he was unhappy at MiBR. He didn’t really get a say in how the team should play, it was always a set structure that FalleN followed and they couldn’t adapt in game after everyone found out how to combat it. I’m 99% sure FalleN will be calling, stew has always said that the IGL role is something he doesn’t enjoy as much and is short term until they found a solution. Stew understands FalleN’s style better than anyone on the team so I think they’ll be working together and that he already has some idea how to make it work.

I think it’s down to the role clashes, Twistzz and Grim played pretty similarly already and if FalleN is coming into call stew will provide more support as well. EliGE and NAF already have the star roles basically so it kinda leaves no room for him I guess? At least it doesn’t make the most of his strengths and I think Twistzz knew that too.

The problem with Twistzz is that, after nitr0's departure and with the way the roles have changed, he's getting put in anchor positions and not able to play the way he plays best . He's forced to play holds and can't move as freely or play as aggressive as he might want to. He's an entry fragger for the most part, and he hasn't been able to be that, meaning he's been playing worse as a result of it. With FalleN on the team, he might be able to fill that gap while still letting EliGE be aggressive and clutch for the team and Grim and Stew be the strong entry fraggers they're capable of being. This also means that they can double AWP more often or just let NAF go back to rifles where he's a lot more comfortable. I honestly think that FalleN's addition with his AWPing and IGL skills would solve a lot of issues for the team.

Well, Fallen is no longer a good IGL anymore. You see what happened with MIBR. He is a good with an AWP though. You need to an IGL that can unite players. I don't feel Fallen has that kind of respect anymore. The dude has so many shady things happened in the background. Plus, his attitude of "do-you-know-who-I-am" is just toxic. After he resigned, even fer, Taco and Dead didn't seem to want to do anything with him. Here he is, joining TL out of the blue.

Good Riddance, I heard he is more interested in his personal life than his career at the moment. If Liquid wants to get anywhere they need players to Focus on their career. He was good at one point I give him that but he no longer is that good. As for people saying it's online and shit well that isn't going to change anytime soon so the change was required. To be honest, I think this is a smart move for Liquid. Stew has been showing that he can't do both fragging + igl at same time and doesnt play well under pressure. Getting a true world class igl like Fallen will make other players fully focus on their own roles and the team will definitely do better in 2021 !

Shouldn't be fallen, look at some of these north american talents , Vanity for example, great igl for Chaos, and a good awper too, instead of going after a 30 year old done igl, they should try to make a new Nitro out of a guy like Vanity. But damn im pretty sure it was Twistzz idea to leave and good for him, hope he might be able to join a team like FaZe or some team that doesn't put him on fucking support and actually let's him play his own game and show us what he is made off. Liquid should -Stewie2k too and +Vanity + Jonji, Chaos was an underrated team, with these 2 players i think we can see a new Liquid that could compete in europe.

twistzz has been garbage for a few months now so i guess this is an ok move. It really has seemed like grim is the only good player on TL. Stew is an awful igl and its unfortunate he has been calling because he himself has not looked like the same player we know he can be. If fallen can come back strong then this is a good move but if he doesnt come back sharp, this may be a terrible move in hindsight. Not many proven igls in the scene and so many teams that need one so no one can hate on this move immediately

The options for twistzz are OG, mouz, faze, col, and c9. To be honest I would not lie to him to go faze because I do not see any future in that team. If they want to achieve something they need to get top-tier igl before twistzz. OG would be a good option If he replaces issaa. The mouz option is law because they have enough firepower they just need the main awper. I think the Col option is also good for him, the thing is that I do not know if to be 3 Na players in the team will make them the NA region team. Because twistzz said he wants to play in EU. C9 can also buy him, but I do not think they will bench or kick someone for twistzz.

CoL is EU based for now & Jason wants to keep it being like that. Eventhough they're actually short on filling the awper role, k0nfig or jks can take that spot for the time being (or unless they're planning on kicking someone off). The other reasonable option is Faze or OG. I would love to see Twistzz in CoL but either OG, Faze or even maybe Extremum is more likely ~
