LNZ to play for NIP in IEM Summer as ztr returns to academy team

The 18-year-old Young Ninjas member has been promoted to the main roster as Ninjas in Pyjamas continue their search for the right composition.

Ninjas in Pyjamas have announced that academy team member Linus "⁠LNZ⁠" Holtäng will step into the main roster for the upcoming IEM Summer tournament, replacing Erik "⁠ztr⁠" Gustafsson, who is set to return to Young Ninjas. The Swedish side made the change shortly following their successful journey at Flashpoint 3, where they finished in second place to MOUZ in their first official showing with Nicolai "⁠device⁠" Reedtz.

Head coach Björn "⁠THREAT⁠" Pers has explained that while ztr has made a great contribution to the team's recent successes, he believes that the 17-year-old needs more time to develop in the academy team, without "the pressure of having to deliver on the highest level."

LNZ has been promoted from the academy team

"Erik [ztr] has contributed enormously to our recent success with great communication and energy, helping us to recover in dire moments," THREAT has stated. "However, I believe he needs some more time to develop as a player, which is why we’ve decided to let him play with Young Ninjas. This opens up an opportunity for LNZ, a gifted player who has been on the rise in Young Ninjas, to try his fortune on the main roster."

With LNZ stepping into the roster, Ninjas in Pyjamas continue their search for the right roster composition, which currently features "a four-man core with a rotating slot filled from Young Ninjas." They have been utilizing that concept for the past four months, having promoted ztr to the main roster as a replacement for Simon "⁠twist⁠" Eliasson in early February, just a few weeks after the secondary team was formed.

LNZ joined the team to fill the void left by ztr and Young Ninjas have been steadily climbing the ranks in the meantime, reaching a 35th peak ranking in late May on the back of third place at BLAST Rising and successful qualification for Elisa Invitational Summer, with the 18-year-old averaging a 1.04 rating.

Ninjas in Pyjamas's lineup for IEM Summer, which is set to kick off on June 3 with the Swedish squad set to face OG in the first round of Group B, will be:

Its not about performance. Its about giving the academyplayers a shot at Tier 1 games. Since they are academyplayers, they probably have contracts, and if they perform well, they might be able to sell them aswell. NiP is really business-oriented. They are trying to do both. ztr didnt play shit as most people say, because he had the worst roles on the team aswell. They might want to give the IGL to LNZ and let hampus roam free, idk, its weird what NiP is doing.

Yes, you can give them shots at tier 1 WHILE switching if the performance isn't there, ztr definantly wasn't ready for tier 1 yet, he even tweeted that himself. He just needs more time and could evolve into a great player. NiP simply can not be slacking so much on a player in these rmr tournaments, they need wins and results.

True, i agree with you. He wasnt ready, but is LNZ ready? Is phzy? Mann3n? I highly doubt that. Also, coming second first tournament with device, is not bad. He did contribute to that. It wasnt like 4v5 and that the other players absolutely killed it. REZ was good and device was godlike. Plopski wasnt super good, and neither was Hampus. We forget that this is a team-oriented esport, it doesnt work unless all 5 contribute.

Most of that is from his first recorded teams. He has a much higher ceiling than ZTR. ZTR has historically been negative, whereas LNZ has had some really strong showings, and has improved a fair amount from where he started.

They don't lose RMR points and they can test a new player, i think it's quite a good move. Tbf he is the biggest problem, having under 0.9 rating and performing maybe once per 6 maps is not good at all. They did well at Flashpoint because everyone did their part, devve obviously with his awp but R EZ, Hampus and Plopski performed to their expectations, ztr did decent enough for us to finish second but with a better 5th we could have and would have done better.

So nip are right to try new things with their academy players and to get time to ztr to take some rest after those last intense months for him. We don't really know what's happening behind the curtains so it's hard to judge. You're right that from our perspective things looked pretty good for NIP but I'm sure Threat had really good justification for this swap

The timing is bad but the swap is reasonable. ZTR isn't really improving, and definitely needs more time to work on gamesense/awareness/timings. He has his moments, but they're wildly inconsistent. LNZ isn't a star on paper, but they need someone who can have consistent output while also potentially putting up numbers (but not being required to frag out) and improving as a player. LNZ has only improved as he's been playing, whereas ZTR has stayed roughly the same regardless of opponent level (which is to say: not very well).

True and as mentioned LNZ to try his luck while they search for the 5th. This is by no means the solid 5th player. I hope they get some opportunities/offers from other teams for the stable 5th man. es3tag, dupreeh, krimz, brollan, forrest.
