Valve launches $1 million Workshop contest

Skin designers have until late October to submit their weapon finishes in the theme of 'Dreams & Nightmares'.

Valve have launched a $1 million Workshop contest, in which the CS:GO developers are looking for the ten best original dream or nightmare-themed weapon finishes. The competition is set to begin on July 22, and artwork can be submitted until October 21.

The company has encouraged skin designers to either adapt existing works or create entirely new art in their submissions. The winners, chosen by November 21, will be awarded $100,000 each and have their artwork shipped in the game in the form of a new case called Dreams & Nightmares.

The developers have selected 17 specific weapons for the case, which are listed here. To help explain the process of selection of the skins that make it into a CS:GO case, Valve have a style guide for weapon finishes available, in which they go over key factors that determine the tiers of skins and whether they end up getting accepted, such as their salience, or recognizability.

I think (this my be wrong) that valve takes 50% from key sells, and other 50% is dived by creators, so out of 17 (usually) creators each gets ~0.065€ and considering that people open millions and millions of cases, creators might earn over half a million EACH (if people open 10m cases, one creator would get ~647058€).

It's good they give back, sure, but Valve profit from it more than the creators. Their market system is not designed to protect the customer, it's to earn them money. Their cut on skin sales, like their cut on game sales, is very high. The amount of cash prize money going to teams at a major pales in comparison to what they earn, they could increase the pot a solid bit more and still come out ahead every single time.

I've literally never been banned, and saying things that are already open discussion between publishers and the media isn't some huge offense. Hell, I've said this before on this site multiple times. But using Google would more than explain it. They're notorious for these issues, from their cut on title sales, to marketplace practices, to refusal to defend their customers over scammers as well as their refusal to support publishers on platforms that compete with their own. EDIT: yeah you're right, anti-consumer practices are "PR babble" and not a term used for litigation. You know, the thing used when you're sued over improper behavior, like, oh Valve have been. I know this is your conspiracy theory, but almost every skins in CSGO cases nowadays are from workshop artists, and Valve credits them everytime and they get a share of the revenue from the skins (or at least a good pay, not sure how it works). They would never copy designs on there to release as their own, they usually use existing valve made patterns to make their own skins and change the colour, but those are mainly in collections, not cases

It's kinda hard to find info on that, but apparently skin creators get a cut from each key bought to open the case they are featured in. I don't know if artists with higher end skins make more but I'm guessing they all make a similar amount of money, otherwise everyone would try to make really fancy skins. As for the inspiration, I wouldn't think they'd inspire themselves too much of other's designs, usually when they make collection skins they reuse other Valve made texture from other collections and go with a theme for the higher end skins like they did with the 3 broken fang collections, I'm sure they got some good artists themselves (but yeah I know it's just a theory of yours in the end, I don't mean to put you down but I just think it'd be extremely unlikely)

Oh great the 2-3 shitty maps that have been added during Operations for the last 2 years got some money which only lasts for a few months before it stops generating revenue and gets removed Im sure the other hundreds of maps creators with maps equal or better to them are so happy about it Skin revenue is permanent so long as the skin market is up, maps do not have this Maps not made by Valve are dropped in favour of worse ones that are made in Valve, even if they are updated continuously and are eventually pulled from even MM servers

Dude I love Valve, Steam is a fantastic product, doesnt mean I cant criticize them whenever they do something goofy or dumb. In this case it's goofy. Its been clear for a long time the dev team for CS is very small, maybe a bit larger now valorant is stealing players, but they don't have enough in house to devote to making art they outsource it to the community and you can bet your ass they're going to take more than just the top 10 for future cases, change a couple things and call it theirs. A few artists will get paid for their efforts so that's not a bad thing

Well I don't think people will get more hype just because of the prize pool. Even the prize pool is 500k all the team fans will still be watching and if you are not a fan, 10 million dollar still won't make you watch the tournament. If you look at how valve marketing their tournaments vs Riot or Epic games, you will see clearly the difference. Not even mentioning Valve only sees Dota as their only kid.

You are still assuming a lot while having zero factual information to base that upon: 1. You don't know what the cut% were so you have no idea if they ever pulled significantly more than 100k. It could be that on average creators made 100k and hence why valve went with it. It could be the other way around too so you can't just paint valve one way or the other 2. If this is for an operation case then remember that creators make a lot less for operation case because of short life span. 3. There's no guarantee that the case would do good. so if you're gonna operate on the hypothetical that there's a chance that the case does good and creators could have potentially made more then see it from other angle too that case could do bad and the creators are still guaranteed to make good money regardless of that. It's guaranteed money regardless of performance.
