ESL and FACEIT merge under new ownership

Two of the largest tournament organizers in CS:GO find themselves part of a deal unprecedented in esports.

ESL and FACEIT, two organizers which have operated the vast majority of the CS:GO calendar throughout the game's history, have been bought by Savvy Gaming Group, it has been announced. The deal, which is worth a combined $1.5B according to a report published by Sports Business Journal, will see the two companies retain their current leadership teams under a new structure.

The deal is expected to be finalized by the second quarter of 2022, the announcement states. According to the ESL FACEIT website, the brands owned by the two companies (FACEIT, DreamHack, ESL, ESEA, and Badlion) will continue to operate as normal.

ESL and FACEIT have hosted some of the most prestigious events in CS:GO

The group responsible for the merger, Savvy Gaming Group, is backed by the Saudia Arabian government's Public Investment Fund and is headed by CEO Brian Ward, previously an Activision Senior VP.

The newly-merged company's website lists a range of initiatives that they will be focusing on, but there are specifically three items of major interest.

Firstly, a statement that one of their "core objectives is to revitalize the North American player base and esports scene for CS:GO," suggesting that investment in the NA scene will be a major part of the organisation's work.

Secondly, the statement discussed a commitment to "develop even stronger anti-cheat programs," explicitly stating that these would be intended to "defend the integrity of top professional LANs." The website also goes on to state that the programs would be free to everyone.

Lastly, the merger promises to provide a "better path to professional play," which includes expanding the FACEIT Pro League (FPL) through things like monthly stipends and hardware support, and supporting partner teams in setting up scouting and development programs.

"Our mission remains unchanged: to create a world where everybody can be somebody," ESL CEO Craig Levine said. "Our merger with FACEIT, along with the backing of SGG, will give us more know-how, capabilities, and resources than ever before to deliver on this vision."

"Whether you are competing or watching, doing so socially or at a professional level, every stage of the pathway will be improved through this merger. For gamers, publishers, and partners, this is a hugely exciting proposition, to be able to take everyone on the journey from your first step into competition to playing on the biggest esports stages globally."

not a fan of the overall thing but it's not like ESL made the move- it was their parent company selling them, they probably didn't have all that much of a choice in the matter.

Why not? For the top teams/players it might actually mean a less stacked calender with fewer, but way bigger, tournaments in the years to come. Making it easier to prioritize what to attend and get a more streamlined season. For the fans it might raise the level of production, events and level of play. It might not, but making a blanket statement that it's bad seems a little strange to me

The way I see it the two biggest tournament hosters in the game just got rolled into one entity. That leaves less incentive to compete against each other in events, prize pools etc

Okay my bad its basically NFL at this point. Dont like closed systems in any sport. However it might be what is needed marketing wise to cement counter strike as a permanent factor in Esports.

Few decades ago when the food, cable, airline, and just about every major industry started merging into the oligarchy with carved out "territories" we have today. Monopolize regionally, but claim that nationally there are 4 or 5 'competitors' which makes it somehow okay. That kind of huge money influx for mega corps doing that spills into the mindset of every business since it sets a new bar that shareholders want to see. Infinite growth fallacies etc. And here we are now where when someone suggests something other than the current monopoly system you get the response "we cant survive if we dont! we wont make enough money!" when every business everywhere was fine before. /endrant

-Less competition is never good -The two big matchmaking platforms providers combine. (less competition) -Reduce in potential separate event providers (Faceit becomes Dreamhack essentialy) -Saudi money (unliked regime in the west due abyssmal human records/backwards mentality towards woman/LGBT and dictatorial regime) -commanding this merger is a former Activision exec who is not known as a company that both cares for it's fans/employees and has recently come under fire for historic bad working environment filled with abuses. It's not like competition revolutionized ESL. They kept their standards through the years. Also Saudi money doesn't mean Saudi Arabia laws being imposed on tournaments. LGBT is a shitshow anyway. I agree with the exec being a shell of a human being, but these kind of people will always be on top. More funds are always welcome. Just check how much saudi money propelled PSG and Manchester City and it's not like they have banned women from matches.

I disagree. While ESL tends to on the more conservative, doing basically the standart for the industry, they have been influenced a lot by other companies (such as E-League, StarLadder, BLAST, PGL) in a variety of things from production to player treatment etc. As the industry standart they´re constantly being pushed by their competition to improve. As for the Saudi Money it´s not really about imposing Saudi laws in tournaments etc. No one expects that, it´s more about how Saudi lacks at entities like free speach, journalism, basic human rights amoung other, which makes supporting them hard when they deny these to million of people. A bit of a moral/ethic problem. As for the money, it´s indeed a good thing. While i don´t believe like Esports needs big cash to prosper (with ESL being a case of how much you can do with little) but more cash tends to be good.

there’s ESIC can 100% confirm a matchfixing, especially in t2 teams. it’s impossible to make an official statement like that.

Hmmm, that Monopoly is not loyal, same reason why I stopped watching Disney movies. Will they smash smaller tournaments? Will they also buy Blast, Funspark or WePlayAcademy League? I can see the circumstances of it being terrible for CSGO and it looks scary. ;(

What...? How does this change any of those TO's plans? WePlayAcademy is strongly entrenched in the amateur scene in Europe right now with no viable competitors. FunSpark is geared towards T2 CS in Europe. BLAST is strongly tied to t1 CS at this point. --- All this partnership is doing is increasing the money and events that ESL/ESEA and faceit can provide. Europe is doing amazing and I am sure this will help the scene but this seems to be more geared towards other areas such as N/A. We don't even have Academy Teams yet in big time orgs... we don't have the structure to provide longevity outside of the game itself unlike Europe.

LUL it takes an american to be blind to the pitfalls of monopoly. xD How about if ESL signs all the best talent and tells them not to work for BLAST? How about if they start bullying the smaller TO's by placing turnaments at the same time as them. Not to make money, but simply to put a dent in the smallers TO's business. What if they start squeesing teams for signup fees to turnaments. The possibilities are endless. Having a monopoly means having everyone by the balls..

Do you consider any sport leagues to be a monopoly? They are trying to create the best competition possible with the best avenues to achieve that for the players. Does the NBA have a monopoly on basketball? I mean they bought out the ABA many many many years ago now. There are still many other leagues out there. It's a joke that we wouldn't want the best 2 platforms joining together when we are talking about a competitive atmosphere.
2022-01-25 00:37

To me (my opinion only), the NBA is sort of a joke, they got a closed circuit that only orchestrates in two countries (not really that competitive, with 29 US teams and 1 Canadian team), too many repetitive games (82 games per season, to be exact) and not to mention the colossal amount of guaranteed money that prevents players from even trying their best. It's in a huge viewership decline rn and has nothing to do with csgo.

It's not the same thing, I am not representing almost the entire competitive scene of a sport (in the case of ESL, they are doing so for other sports too). So for them to do that, it does damage their reputation and the standard people were holding them to. Imagine promoting something for everyone and yet being backed by people who don't give a shit about basic human rights.

kinda hypocritical to see all these clowns rage against that "immoral" saudi money while driving their internal combustion engine cars for all their lives and building up that saudi money. Every single one of us is at fault here.

At least Vince has the integrity and balls to say "FU" to the Saudis. I for one, won't support ESL/Blast ect ect by even watching a single stream from their events. Just wish some players had the balls to tell their orgs that they refuse to play in Saudi owned tournaments. (and no, this has nothing to do with racism, more of a moral "obligation" to not support a regime like SA)
