Spirit and 9z coaches banned from PGL Major Antwerp

Sergey "⁠hally⁠" Shavaev and Rafael "⁠zakk⁠" Fernandes have been revealed as two of the three coaches banned from the upcoming Major.

On Thursday, ESIC released a preliminary report explaining that it is close to revealing its findings of the full extent of the historic use of the infamous coaching bug, for which 37 coaches were banned in September 2020 and which has since been found to have other variants, at the time unknown.

In it, the watchdog stated that it would issue new bans to coaches involved based on its findings, including three participants of PGL Major Antwerp, which is set to start on May 9.

Although ESIC, PGL or Valve have yet to name the three coaches in question, it has been revealed that two of them are hally and zakk by representatives from their organizations, Spirit and 9z.

Spirit released a statement defending hally and criticizing ESIC

The third is believed to be Imperial's Luis "⁠peacemaker⁠" Tadeu, who, according to a report from Jaxon released in April, encountered what ESIC identified as the most serious variant of the coaching bug that allowed a coach to roam freely around the map.

Both Spirit and 9z shared their frustration over the bans being handed out well over a year after the evidence was brought together, with the former saying that the video evidence of hally encountering the bug was uploaded in October 2020 and zakk stating that the investigation concluded 14 months ago.

Spirit additionally shared the clip in question, in which hally is seemingly stuck in the static version of the bug for one round, and defended their coach, arguing that the team could not have benefitted from the information gained in that position.

Yes but they have been sitting on this information for over a year at this point, what would a couple extra weeks have done? Also, presumably the orgs, players, and coaches found out this way too. If that is the case it's not a lot of time especially for smaller teams like 9z and spirit to turn around and get a new coach and get them up to date on all the strategies they have to learn

It's not ideal, but they are cheaters after all. I don't know what their reasons are. But I don't agree that letting people of whom you have evidence of cheating play a major is a good idea either. Timing is bad but we don't even know how valve will react to this. Best thing to do is wait. Although again, I don't think it's a good idea to be this slow with investigations.

Well if Valve decides to ban coaching then I think ESIC ends up harming the scene even though their mission is right. And the precedent has already been set, anyone who knew about the bug, didn't report it and/or didn't automatically disconnect when it happened to them is considered a cheater and will be banned. Based on the evidence presented thus far this applies to both cases.

According to what the precedent seems to be it's that whenever you encounter the bug you're supposed to disconnect and tell an admin. Not after the round is played but as soon as it happens.

It is only fair really. Imagine being robban and not being able to coach the major but other coaches do get the chance to although they should be banned aswell. Idk if it's better late than never. I personally believe the timing should've been a week earlier. I will assume the coaches already travelled to belgium and will now be either stuck in a hotel or have to find a way back to their countries. In that regard I think it's bad. It is not cheating when you accidentally reproduced a bug and used it. 90% of bans are stupid by definition. How can an "organization" decide whether to ban a person for exploiting a bug that was accidentally obtained? Damn 1 round a year, how many games do teams play a year on average, around 100-150? Is it about 2500 rounds? This is nonsense. If they are such badass detectives, then start a new investigation to find the players who have been using the smoke grenade bug for years? PGL and Valve could choose not to follow through with ESIC bans if they think it'll harm the event. ESIC works as a separate entity going through what they consider ban-worthy. This by their definition is ban-worthy.

Should of have released this a week earlier but I don't know how their procedures work. This is why I say that if they need more people they should get more people. I'd rather have a scene where ESIC is not only active but also efficient. Currently their efficiency leaves a lot to be desired with how long they take and how these things are teased instead of just getting the information. But I do understand an investigation of over 5 years of demo reviewing must take a lot of time and effort, you wouldn't want to get something wrong and just for the sake of letting it out just in time you mess it up.

Tweet doesn't load. The whole investigation (that was supposed to drop before the major) has a lot of names in there, these three might've been leaked just before the major just because they didn't want them competing. I'll assume ESIC will do the same for teams in the Legends stage so it might be smart for coaches that knew they cheated to already step down before ruinning the chances for their roster. The 5 years is a number I recall Richard Lewis mentioning but I might be wrong there. I am once again referring to the whole investigation. The precedent has been set and it is considered bug abuse. Peacemaker is closer to cheating than just abusing the bug. I don't agree but I do believe it's only fair to ban all of the coaches that fall under this category. I don't think the timing is right. But at the same time I don't think it's bad to drop it before the major. The usage of the bug is not an excuse because there are cases of certain coaches who also didn't do all that much/did nothing and were still convicted and banned from majors.

this is the problem with commenting without knowledge...many coachs fell on that bug without even knowing, some got penalized for 1 round without even using it, others weren't even on the pc at the time of the match and got banned all the same, there's a coach from a known team (can't remember which one) that got stuck on the bug but wasn't on the pc and still gets banned while his team lost that match 16-1, like what kind of way of cheating is that ???? I think the biggest issue isn't only the timing and lack of effectiveness on these bans, but also that they don't handle proper bans to each situation, there are coachs who abused the bug an deserve some hard punishment, but you can't punish with the same strenght a coach that got it for 1 round and didn't use it or one that wasn't even on the pc at the time. This is as stupid as it is outrageous.

Why give 30day ban for 1 round glitch with no benefit and blame coach for cheating right before major for something he did observed years ago? I don't understand how ESIC still exists. They have held onto evidence for so long and only release this information + ban coaches right before a Major is set to start. THey end up hurting not just the coaches but also the organizations and the players that werent prepared for this. Look at peacemaker, the imperials coach, its clear that he deserves the ban. Hes not right Tho. Knowing is not enough to hand bans same like knowing someone murdered someone is not enough either to go prison it takes time to prove and gather every evidence as 1 usually cannot be used.
