Valve unveils first edition of Regional Standings ranking

Valve's teased ranking has been unveiled, featuring prizemoney won as a key factor.

Valve has released the first edition of its Regional Standings, a ranking that will be used to determine a portion of invitations to later qualification stages for the CS:GO Majors.

The developers have revealed that the ranking is based on three factors: A team's prize money earned, their beaten opponents' prize money earned and teams beaten, and head-to-head results; and said the exact formula will be public in the coming weeks.

Heroic lead the European Major Standings by just a few points heading into 2023

According to the release, the current formula will be used for the qualifiers leading up to the BLAST.tv Paris Major but is subject to change at a later point as Valve continues to experiment with the model, looking to find one that best predicts future match results.

The ranking is separated into three regions, Europe, Americas, and Asia, each of which will be used to determine half of the invites to the closed qualifiers for the corresponding Regional Major Ranking tournaments.

Over 300 teams in total are currently ranked across the three regions, and the latest full standings can be found here.

Yeah complexity have more wins in t1, not because they are better really but because they are partnered with more TOs and get more invites to t1 events. Pain rarely plays in t1 events and when they do they lose. Fluxo probably would be ranked higher if they played more.

I’m not sure I understand. It states in the opening of the article what the formula is: “The developers have revealed that the ranking is based on three factors: A team's prize money earned, their beaten opponents' prize money earned and teams beaten, and head-to-head results; and said the exact formula will be public in the coming weeks.” Feel free to have your own ranking and argue at the water cooler who the “GOAT” is, but this is what the results of the formula they have used are.

yup yup, I think it's fair but i hope they will tweak the algoritm a bit, look a bit flawed (also i made typo and meant every team up to #30 is either invited to RMR (top 16 from Rio) or to closed qual)

Depends on the region. For example in Asia all 8 spots in the RMR are still open (no Asian team in the Legends stage), so the closed qualifier will feature at least 16 teams. Out of those 16 teams 8 will be invited via the regional standings ranking. The other teams come from open qualifiers. For Europe 14 teams from the Rio legends stage are already qualified for the 2 RMRs, so 18 are still missing. That means the closed qualifier should consist of at least 36 teams. Of these 36 teams 18 teams are invited from the Europe ranking. Edit: Actually it seems like Valve removed the passage that at least twice the number of teams that can qualify need to attend the closed qualifier. So I assume they just do 2 x 16 Swiss Brackets and have 18 teams qualify (using the same rules as if 18 teams would qualify via the RMR).
2022-12-22 14:23

yes correct. 16 invited + 16 from open qual then top 8 from each swiss make it to the RMR and 2:3 teams will play for the 17 and 18 spot
2022-12-22 14:34

They can choose to split the qualifiers into different regions for ping reasons, so a 16 team Asian qualifier would probably only happen if they did the qualifier on LAN. A LAN qualifier would be awesome for the Asian scene, but more likely they'll do a bunch of different 8 team online qualifiers split between the regions.

No team will qualify to the major with these rankings, and almost all of the top teams will be auto invited to the RMR anyways. I don’t think you understand what’s happening here. All this does is allows teams that play high level tournaments all year to skip online qualifiers. That’s it

Like I said it will be evened out more by the major. The funny thing is that I think past legends stage still get RMR spots, so the only top 10 team that’s actually relevant in this whole thing is G2. Like astralis should also benefit from this but they’re fucking15th lol

No ranking that has prize money as the prime factor can be taken seriously, usually the most prestigious tournaments have the biggest prize money but it depends on the TO of that tournament, it could have 100k less prize money and have the same status of importance This shit is garbage, didnt expect any from Vavle and they still disappointed
2022-12-22 11:56

Well it’s not just prize money earned - it’s prize money in if who you’ve beaten as well I’d say in general prize money is at least correlated to how prestigious tournament is. You say a tournament can have a prize pool of 100k and be more prestigious but I can’t see any example of that this year. Overall do you not find the top 13 or so to be pretty much correct outside of a few specific slots, but the teams are relatively accurate, no? They said they will change the model based how everything unfolds. I don’t think this is the worst results given that they had to start at some arbitrary starting point

EPL has a prize pool of 823k and its still an S tier event where the best teams participate Winning EPL should not be less valuable in the rankings than winning a BLAST event for example

I dont think you see the problem with this shit lmao So some arab pumps 1.5m prize pool into a tournament with the same teams as BLAST World Final that has 1m prize pool, you are telling me just because of that 500k difference its fair that its given more points when the teams are the same
2022-12-22 12:11

I understand it COULD be a problem. But valve just unveiled it and said it was subject to change. Overall as it stands right now I think the correlation of prize money -> prestige for tournaments is pretty accurate for the most part. If someone made a super expensive tournament that was just for the sake of getting teams to the major, I’m sure that could be addressed. Valve said it’s a work in progress. I also look at the rankings and they seem pretty accurate outside a few outliers. G2 for example should probably be around 7th or so and maybe bump faze up a bit. Otherwise the teams in the top 13 are the ones who deserve to be there. Be honest, consider valves history and how open the CS scene is. Do you not find it pretty impressive they were able to pretty accurately get the correct roughly top 13? I’m absolutely shocked it’s as roughly accurate as it is
2022-12-22 12:16

It literally does not matter since this ranking only exists to sort out closed qualifier invites.
2022-12-22 12:24

Isnt it for rmr qualifiers so they will count the last major as the first event and not the whole year at least I think that. Its for major so it will go around major and restart after Paris major

Recently yeah, this is not a "RECAP OF THE YEAR LIST" , its a ranking. Heroic played really good on their 5 last tournaments Outsiders won a tier 2 thophy and a fucking major G2 for me doesn't make sense in First place but they were not bad in Pro League and ok in blast fall finals and they won the last tournament of the year

Ofc they use prizepool money as a metric.. Partner teams being benefited from this closed circuits while the rest needs to grind the shit out of open tournaments to surpass them. This and the last change they made to the RMR is just a way to ensure big dogs get their spot in the major.. might as well just go and invite who they want

It’s honestly shocking how accurate it is for a first iteration. Obviously not perfect as for example G2 is too high. But it’s quite good for a first test IMO

Of course it isn't, however it's still better than VALVe to have their own judgement which tournaments are worth points and which arent - in this situation all tournaments are relevant.

So some teams get a boost in the rankings because they're directly invited to tournaments because their org is partnered with the tournament organiser. Yeah I cannot see this being an issue to competitive integrity in the future.

This is literally just to skip online qualifier. I see no issue with if a team has consistently beaten great teams all year they get to skip an online qualifier where a single cheating team could ruin your whole tournament

This is quite good way to do this. I have nothing to complain until we see it in action. 1) its publicly available information and easy enough to understand 2) it punishes top heavy prizepools (of partner teams) because that way only the winner will get anything towards Valve ranking. This means that most tournaments it will be much more beneficial to spread the prizepool more evenly to get attention of more teams for "easy points". This will lead to more healthy cs:go system overall. 3) It punishes partner team tournaments for spreading money in other ways than prizepools. Meaning that if the patner shares get more added to prizepools, some other teams than partners only have a chance to benefit from those increased prizepools. 4) In theory any TO, especially just before rmr teams are locked, have good chance to do a massive tournament with massive prizepool that everyone close to the qualification line will have to participate or risk not getting the invite.

This is a bad joke If i have a esports team, lets say i am G2 I hire 7 more "csgo teams" from some poor country and pay them minimum wage i change all the player contracts that i keep tournament winnings i then organize a 1 million dollar torunament every day, winner gets 300k 2-8 100k each after 1 week g2 has made 2.1mil in winnings against opponents who all made 700k..... its an over exaggeration but TOs with partnered teams will likely change their format to help their partnered teams to farm extra money in return for higher entry fees.....

Very bad take, major that was always free from franchising and is supposed to be equal chance for everybody now will count performance in blast events which spots are highly dependent on whether the org is paying Blast for a partnership
