PGL to organize first Counter-Strike 2 Major in Copenhagen

Romanian tournament organizer PGL has revealed that it will organize the first Major in the recently announced new version of the game, Counter-Strike 2.

The tournament will take place on March 17-31, 2024, in Denmark's capital city of Copenhagen. The Royal Arena, which has hosted several BLAST tournaments since 2017, has been chosen as the venue.

The announcement follows last week's revelation of CS:GO's successor, Counter-Strike 2, and the start of its Limited Test phase, which is due to last until the new game's expected official release in the summer.

The Copenhagen tournament will be the first Major to take place after the BLAST.tv Paris Major, set to run on May 8-21. Valve revealed on Friday that there would be no second Major in 2023, but despite this, the tournament's prize pool will remain the same it has been since PGL Major Antwerp — $1,250,000.

PGL CEO Silviu Stroie shared the company's ambition for the first Counter-Strike 2 Major to break the all-time viewership record, which PGL itself set at PGL Major Stockholm 2021 with a peak concurrent viewership of over 2.7 million during the grand final between Natus Vincere and G2.

"One of the greatest games of all time is marching to another chapter, and we couldn't be happier to host probably the most important Major of the franchise in recent years," Stroie said in a press release. "Denmark has a rich esports heritage, and we're excited to bring the world's best Counter-Strike teams to Copenhagen to compete for the game's most prestigious title."

The Royal Arena will host the first Counter-Strike 2 Major

PGL CS2 Major Copenhagen 2024 will be the fourth Major overall and the third since 2021 organized by Romanian company PGL, and it will be the first Counter-Strike Major hosted by Denmark. Below is a full list of past and future official Counter-Strike Majors:

Are you new to CS? 2018 Belo Horizonte ESL hosted another event in Brazil. For the first time ever at a big CSGO event pro players, Space Soldiers, were spat on. At Rio 2022 it was Navi being spat on. This is not new. ESL hosting events in Brazil is not new. The events having big issues from audience members alone is not new. And despite all of that ESL was unable to make even the production aspect, totally in their control, up to a high standard. ESL chooses crap venues and is ok with shit production because they have such a ridiculous monopoly there is no requirement to meet high standards.

There were still many issues with audio and stuff, idk why you need to defend them in every comment possible??? Esl had issues with players' computers and electricity (which is a RIO problem) but otherwise it was great I don't have any problem with PGL but those majors weren't really great and had many issues

I can kind of understand the desire for it to be Cologne or Kato though since it's the 2 most historic CS:GO events. The Second 2024 major should have been hosted by blast in Copenhagen. Why is PGL hosting a major in Denmark to begin with and not Blast? Well the answer is money but come on. They are literally using the same arena that Blast uses.

My worry is that they don't use the advantages at hand. Similarly to what happened at stockholm. Being an event organizer is a lot about experience. Why is Cologne and Katowice always so smooth? Because ESL is extremely familiar with the venue, vendors, the local police, transportation, sound equipment etc. etc. PGL seem more interested in cutting corners It makes sence that if a danish major was to be held in the royal arena that the organizers who are already familiar with the venue and surronding area would host it. That's not even considering the advantages that a Danish Company get's for hosting a tournament in Denmark. But i get that it's about money.

Me when I watched two PGL RMR deliveries, "Oh...another PGL sound is broken...take a lesson from ESL." This may not be of interest to those who did not watch the qualifiers, as it was actually fixed in the Playoff. Copenhagen was originally the holy land of BLAST. I expect it will probably be the best place to host the event. That is, if CS2 had not failed.

Still $1,250,000 huge L from Valve. Imagine prize pool increased just by 25% in past 7 years since 2016 which is absolutely ridiculous. Dota 2 had prize pool of 1,000,000$ without crow funding back in 2011 which is 12 years ago….. With increasing amount of viewers and more players then ever Valve has much more money but they still cheap out on CSGO majors. If you are greedy and don’t want to invest yourself then ok at least add crowd funding via operations and some special items related to major just like compendium in Dota 2, but ofc that won’t happen since why would you give 25% of operation ticket to pro players who bring more people to the game right? Now with CS2 here this is the best time to revamp 10 years old system which is totally outdated and unfair to the pro players and viewers who decide to buy viewer pass for the price of whole game lmao. Amount of content you get with viewer pass in csgo compared to compendium in dota which is basically same price is absolutely hilarious. The greed is just unbelievable.

Do you understand what stickers are? The real prize pool is actually around 36 million USD they just don't say that. Valve revealed that themselves. 50% of sticker sale proceeds go to the teams. They just use a different system. Instead of making a huge Prize Pool where the winning team get's a massive cut, they have a small prize pool but a huge payday just for qualifying for the major. In both Antwerp and Stockholm just getting a slot in the sticker capsules was worth between 2 million to 500.000 USD depending on what estimate you believe in. That's why qualifying is so important. For a small team like IHC or Grayhound to get 500k-1 million is insane money. That is like the 5 players salary for multiple years.

Dude I don’t think Canada has gotten a LAN event since The Northern Arena days which was like 2017? Sad. They only do them in siege that I know of atm. Vancouver, Toronto, or Montreal is the place to host one. US has several cities that would be great too. I just feel like our region and Australia just gets put into the dirt when it comes to majors.

NA did not forget about counter strike lol. The IEM Dallas event was sold out with a great crowd cheering for c9. Just because the competitive scene isn’t what it used to be. Casually it’s still huge. Australia has scuffed time zones but they have great crowds along with NA.

Maybe, But I think we will see CS2 tournament before the year ends. Expected full launch for CS2 is somewhere in June. Probably after Blast Major. I think its tournament organisers decision. We might see transition after Cologne.

Why does Denmark get another major event? BLAST hosts tournament after tournament there and the crowds are notoriously bad. They also cried the most about the Rio major being 'so bad'. Also with all the scandals and lack of integrity surrounding Danish CS especially as of late I do not think they deserve it. Big mistake imo

Ok hear me out There is a big difference between the crowd at at major and a blast tournament, in any tournament at home turf there is bound to be an abundance of locals, but for majors there usually are more foreigners than for lets say a blast tournament Lack of integrity, yet we are the least corrupt country in the world
