hampus returns to Ninjas in Pyjamas, Aleksib benched

The Swedish captain returns to competition after taking a break in January.

Ninjas in Pyjamas have announced Hampus "hampus" Poser's return to the starting roster as captain, cementing his comeback after a five-month break from competition. To make space for the returning in-game leader, Aleksi "Aleksib" Virolainen was moved to the bench.

hampus took a step back from competitive Counter-Strike due to health reasons in January, scheduled to miss the entirety of the spring season. As the tournament break approached, the player's agent confirmed to HLTV that the Swede was "more than ready to come back."

hampus is "more than ready to come back"; NIP to assess roster in off-season
hampus returns to NIP ahead of the fall season

Ninjas in Pyjamas COO Jonas "calc" Gundersen stated shortly after the agent's comments that the organization was going to consider their options on and off the bench in the off-season. "We'll take our time to assess our long-term vision properly in the off-season, and make sure we're positioned the best way possible to make an impact in CS2."

The news brings an end to Aleksib's nine-month tenure with the Swedish organization. The Finn came into the squad not long after an underwhelming stint with G2, but generated excitement as hampus was freed from the leadership reigns to focus on fragging. He oversaw the team's move away from Swedish and transition to English communication, leading them to the playoffs of just one Big Event at BLAST Premier Fall Final 2022.

k0nfig joins NIP as hampus goes on break

"hampus is taking up the IGL mantle once more — well-rested and hungrier than ever," read Ninjas in Pyjamas' comment on Twitter. "This change also means Aleksib has been moved to the bench. Over the past two seasons, he has helped bring much-needed structure to the team that will keep serving us going forward, and we're sincerely grateful for his time with us."

hampus was the team's captain since his arrival from GamerLegion in May 2020 until Ninjas in Pyjamas's acquisition of Aleksib last year. He led the Swedish squad through several tournaments, claiming playoff spots at both PGL Major Stockholm and PGL Major Antwerp as well as a second-place finish at IEM Winter 2021.

Ninjas in Pyjamas and hampus are scheduled to take the stage together after the tournament break at BLAST Premier Fall Groups 2023 in Copenhagen, Denmark between July 13-23. The team will be put to the test immediately against the likes of Vitality, HEROIC, and FaZe just a few days before the start of IEM Cologne.

Ninjas in Pyjamas are now:

Ukraine Daniil "headtr1ck" Valitov
Denmark Kristian "k0nfig" Wienecke
Sweden Fredrik "REZ" Sterner
Sweden Ludvig "Brollan" Brolin
Sweden Hampus "hampus" Poser

Sweden Daniel "djL" Narancic (coach)

Finland Aleksi "Aleksib" Virolainen (benched)

I wonder if meta has changed from structural CS to a more free CS as the players have become more and more skilled. Every new strat is analyzed and countered quickly. If all players can be ”mini-IGLs”, is there a need for proper IGL at all?

Someone still needs to dictate the flow and come up with a strategy when the game isn't going their way. Look at Faze, they definitely play under this style of everyone being their own play maker, but sometimes when it isn't working karrigan will switch to executed plays. Basically you still need a leader who has the final say.

We have already witnessed what NIP and that lineup could do, which is definitely not win trophies. Hampus had his chance and didn't win anything. I chalk this up as just another idiotic move by their incompetent management. Some things just never change.

It's not gonna make them contender for winning trophies but it's a step in the right direction. With hampus they didn't even had a dedicated awper (were playing with es3tag) and were playing with Plopski and were a top6 consistent team, with Aleksib, he got headtr1ck, he got k0nfig, and still couldnt acomplish nothing, Aleksib was the wrong move to begin with. But what do i know, every team he joins gets subsequent worse (OG, NIP and G2)

Aleksib has had some rough moments for sure, but he did lift up OG, and they went to the finals in katowice with G2 before jks was even in the team. I wouldn't say their breakdown in the major with NIP was purely his fault. To me it looked more like k0nfig meltdown when looking at the last games. I personally liked aleksib in NIP

Aleksib in G2 afterwards Katowice was painful to watch man, I'm gonna be maybe delusional but with Aleksib, G2 didn't even win eco rounds, the strategies sometimes were so painful, Aleksib can't even stay calm and tilts all the time, and that just didn't work with NiKo. People before were saying that G2 was unfair to aleksib, that hooxi was completely garbage, but at least HooXi did manage to not choke in world finals and katowice, and hooxi makes very good calls.

I think Niko is more of raging to himself. He has been more calm with hooxi bcs he's a chill and hype man. But sometimes in his body language you can see he doesn't anger to his teammates but to himself. Even going to the point of hurting himself (like hitting himself in the head). Maybe he suffers from PTSD or anxiety. But yeah, Niko needs to pass through his demons...

He got kicked because his IGL style to take control of the player. And it is not a bad thing consider how C9 fucked up for letting the player play freely. They actually have 2 of the best players in they role and lossening the control from igl cause them every single game. Just because the star player want to do whatever doesn't mean thaat it's a good thing. Glaive no longer have the same style like aleksi and look at where astralist now.

Not always about fault but didn't seem to be the solution the teams he joined needed. I think he has a good idea what should be done but good players don't have to be micromanaged and u can't take advantage from their natural talent for decision making which makes them worse ultimately. I think he would be awesome for unexperienced players to get an idea how to play the game on a high level

Do you realise that sometimes players play bad because of their IGL's bad calls? I'm not saying it's 100% Aleksi's fault that Brollan fell off because nobody knows what's happening behind the scenes, but it could as well be the case. There's a reason why Brollan stopped playing well in NiP and both Rez and k0nfig got even more inconsistent than before. I wouldn't be surprised if all 3 of them start playing better now that Hampus is back.

When I watched NIP games personally these guys just lost duels. In the major as well they tried so much to play around smokes and got fucked. k0nfig was always inconsistent he didnt get much worse than his time in Astralis. REZ was/still is overrated from IEM Oakland lol. Brollan was the missing piece that just never arrived. headtr1ck was pretty good tho.

If they're not comfortable with their postions/playstyle, they will lose more duels. The question is - are they? I guess they are, because if they weren't, they wouldn't have let aleksib get kicked. The management surely asked the players about their opinions and if the decision was made, then something was clearly off. K0nfig did get slightly worse: hltv.org/stats/players/matches/9078/k0nf.. vs hltv.org/stats/players/matches/9078/k0nf.. Rez has always been inconsistent, but somehow aleksib's system made him an even more inconsistent player, which is quite an achievement, honestly And brollan, well, he has been underwhelming since joining NiP, so aleksib can't be blamed for that once. Which doesn't mean that Brollan won't start playing better under Hampus' leadership, because it might as well happen. headtr1ck was good, true, and I guess he will stay good. Time will tell.
2023-06-14 19:24

well tbf k0nfig had a broken arm and that whole ass drama so I think its fair he got slightly worse. REZ was kinda overrated man. He will work well when he is the third star but not when you need him to show up otherwise you have no chance due to him being so up and down. Brollan was pretty good right at the start of NIP, but fell off a cliff. hltv.org/stats/players/13666/brollan?sta.. look at the graph its just he keeps getting worse and worse. The issue is Aleksi just didnt have enough to work with. There was no true star rifler who ever stepped up and carried the team. headtr1ck can only go so far as a rookie awper who was a rifler beforehand to begin with in NaVi Junior.

REZ did very well with Hampus until he got moved to awp though. He was about to go top 20 in 2022 but fell of during the summer break. I think Hampus style of calling and teamplay makes more sense when he has 3 aggressive players, his style of calling has also kindof become the meta with having all the players be playmakers. Tldr, Hampus is a better fit for THIS team, allowing more freedom for aggresive players

on the other hand if I remember NIP had some stints of terrible T side play. also hampus himself basically quit igling and they got aleksi so its weird to see him just back as if nothing happened

It seems he wanted to stop Igling because of stress/personal issues. They were really bad at T sides in 2021 and the beginning of 2022, then again they had no awper, academy players and Plopski. On hltv confirmed I think they mentioned that they had around 15 players on the team between 2020-2023 They then switched coach and got better.

Brollan is shit since the Krieg nerf, which was far away in the past, long before NiP was even considering signing aleksib.

Brollan is worse than he was in the krieg era, yes, but still, from 2020 to 2022 he was actually decent, carried his own weight definitely. Ever since joining NiP he has been a shadow of his former self though

Plus, he wanted to go swedish again and now they're international xd NiP's just a clownfiesta at this point, I can't even blame aleksib even though it looks kinda sus that he's got benched/kicked again. At a certain point, you just can't call it bad luck anymore, but then again, it was OG, G2 and NiP, three of the most hilariously chaotic orgs.

All teams apart from ence got better when aleksib left, even og. When you get to play with talents like NiKo,m0nesy, huNter, brollan, rez and still don't have events to show for it then it's a problem.

OG got better? By doing well in 2 blast groups tournaments? OG was never better than when led by aleksi except the 2 tournaments degster hard carried. If we were real about G2 he barely had a real chance and a rookie m0nesy + JACKZ in career worst form instead of jks. Not like HooXi is doing amazing these days eh? My opinions on NIP are #68. Aleksi aint perfect but in context it just isnt all his fault. Tho tbf to guys like HooXi m0nesy went from a good awper to a elite one which is a big difference.

Yeah, impossible to say who's to blame for what, BUT one of Aleksi's biggest problems seems to be the lack of ability to let awpers take more responsibility. He needs to just accept that it's the best asset any team has. Players like Rez cosplaying a literal anchor, dragging the team down, don't matter if your awper hard-carries the team a'la degster.

fair enough. I just dont subscribe to this bullshit narrative where teams go to shit when aleksi joins. In context he isnt perfect, but neither have his lineups been that great either. That NIP team just sucked. Even if the roles were optimal at times none of the riflers showed up to become star players. k0nfig was a worse version of his astralis self. Brollan since joining NIP is in a career worst slump. REZ is as inconsistent as ever but he was pretty alright overall.

Agree, teams def get better with aleksi and also worse once he leaves. And it isn't surprising that players want to get rid of a guy who limits their gameplay, regardless of whether the team benefits from it. Anyway, OG and NIP were basically both t2-caliber teams that happened to be relevant because of Blast/ESL partnership. NIP won't get much better with this lineup because 1. the players aren't good enough, and 2. there's role clashes within the roster. More changes will follow at some point. There'll probably be some fireworks involved given that konfig is imo likely to be the next one to go. I fully disagree on REZ though. He has majorly overstayed his welcome in NIP. Not good enough to be a star, and not cerebral enough to be anything else.

His teams were better then what some IGLs had to work with. Aleksib had enough time with G2 and all they did was reach 2 playoffs. Sure G2 isn't doing good now but hooxi already won 2 events and reached more playoffs and it's not like he was in G2 much longer then aleksib was. He hinders players a lot and it showed how both m0nesy and niko suddenly exploded in performance when hooxi joined. The only player that had some sort of benefit rating vise in that G2 team under aleksib was huNter.

ratings arent everything and aleksi had a fundamentally different lineup with rookie m0nesy and JACKZ. Even then he had a finals appearance in a t1 LAN. Both igls failed their first majors as well.

Go watch OG's achievements. They did very well when aleksib was in the team. They got some 1st and 2nd place finishes in big tournaments and got to semis in pro league season 14. Definitely not bad for OG with players who weren't big names at the time, and a hatchling frozen.

Just like G2 when they qualified for the major just a couple months after Aleksi left... oh wait.. And they were just getting it together with some decent playing and barely fell off the major play offs. Such a shame, NiP won't get better without a good system, they'll be forever average with hampus as an IGL.

What does G2 have to do with this? lol NiKo, M0nesy and HuNter have better stats since aleksib left, because his system didn't fit them, and it seems like it's the same case with NiP players. Aleksi's system isn't bad, it just needs the right players for it to work. It did work wonders in ENCE, it worked fine in OG, it didn't work in G2, it didn't work in NiP. And it isn't surprsing, tbh. Players like NiKo, Rez, M0nesy, K0nfig, Brollan, HuNter... they all thrive in a more loose environment. And that loose environment is what Hooxi and Hampus can bring in. Aleksi would do good in a team like Heroic, they have a pretty strict system. He would also fit in C9 or Navi, VP and maybe Astralis as well. But all these teams aren't talking in english or fininish, so the language barrier makes it unable for him to go there. I hope he finds a team where the players will be on the same page and make his system work. But NiP just wasn't it. I genuinely believe that now NiP's inconsistent trio will get more consistent, because they will have more freedom.

G2 isn't really performing at the moment. They just had a 'honeymoon period' with HooXi after they got the basics together, but that's over now and no team can be consistent without a system. Pick any sport and the situation stays exactly the same. This should be common knowledge already, but somehow this community wants to think this sport is different. No amount of superstars can deliver without a working system. That's just how team sports work. All the teams consistently in top 5 and top 5 placements in big tournaments have a great system which have been perfected for years. NiP will never win with this roster. At least they were going to the right direction but pressure took over at the last hurdle in the majors. Someone else should be at the bench. Edit: fixed too obvious typos

Of course G2 has a system, just not a strict one, but rather one that accounts for freedom of choice of positions and actions of the players. I'd say their season was quite okay, 2 big tournament throphies after 5 years is pretty good in today's competitive era. Every team has some kind of a system, obviously. It's just that a lot of teams have a really loose system, meanwhile aleksib's system has always been pretty strict in terms of what the player's tasks for the round are, where he should go, what he should hold etc., and it just doesn't fit the NiP guys, just like it didn't fit the G2 guys. But it did fit the OG guys, it also did fit ENCE guys. So it's just about finding the right team. As I said, Heroic would be a perfect team for Aleksi if he spoke danish. Heroic with loose playstyle would probably suck, just like G2 and NiP sucked with a strict playstyle. NiP might never win with Hampus, but they also might win something pretty soon. Only time will tell. I agree that things were going in the right directon for NiP, but if they made a decision of cutting aleksi, there surely must've been a reason. Management doesn't make changes without asking the players about their opinion. And when you have 3 guys that played their best CS in a loose system... the answer that NiP management got was DO IT, KICK HIM. And i guess it's for the best for the both sides. Maybe aleksib can finally find a team that will let him implement his system 100% and make it work. And Hampus will probably be better for NiP. So it's a win-win situation imo

Maybe that's the biggest problem. Giving power to the players even though the problem is somewhere totally else. The communication was horrible in the sides so the system doesn't work. Just when it started to show some positives they forfeit and go back to the old team they wanted to change for some reason. Seems stupid, but what ever.

It's definitely not straightforward Hampus is too valuable an asset not to have him play when he's fit and healthy to do so Brollan needs to be a star consistently Rez too Maybe hampus has the igl mind and fragging power to get the most out of the team in CS2. Aleksi did ok though in his time with NiP

Aleksib to the finnish scene please. Stop being wasted and bounced back & forth in international teams. Just get a strong finnish team together and prove your worth. IMO hampus as IGL didnt work because tactically they were really weak. He was a strong fragger tho, so it looked good. But they lack a consistent star. k0nfig is inconsistent, REZ is the definition of inconsistency, headtr1ck is inconsistent and Brollan has been dogshit since joining, idk what happened to him.

aleksi and hampus played in the same roster, hampus was just a rifler/2nd caller then and imo that's what they should've gone with now: bench one of the 3 incredibly inconsistent riflers and make hampus a star

I guess anything just not to kick the waste of space known as REZ. Goddamn is NiP stupid. REZ is your only player that's left from the Forest and Get_Right era of NiP and he's still shit, he hasn't improved at all super inconsistent and cannot be your star player, fucking hampus is a better choice instead of him.

AleksiB Dexter Nexa Suddenly the IGL market actually has some options. Fnatic should definitely drop FASHR for one of these guys and let Mezii focus on fragging again. I’d love to see: AleksiB Mezii Regali Kairon Krimz (Offer him the spot, tell him if he wants to leave because of the changes that you respect his wishes) Also Sprout: Zyphon Launx Dexter/Nexa Wonderful/ArtFrost (whoever Spirit doesn’t pick, both good) 5th idk lol

Not saying undeserved, but man their riflers suck. Best thing for aleksi would probably be Finnish team, but since Jimpphat is under contract and Jamppi doesn't seem to come back to CS the player options are horseshit. Oh, and obviously there's €€€ involved too.

Said it before, will say it a million times. AleksiB is an Amazing IGL, for young players and middle of the pack players. His style is perfect for molding young players into efficient T1 performers and managing middling players who like to be micro managed. He Absolutely CANNOT IGL for free flowing players like K0nfig and REZ or superstars like Niko. It's just not compatible.

It will be fun to watch how to new NIP roster plays out since hampus, brollan and k0nfig are all aggressive players in different ways. They can make great space for rez to shine (if he can maintain a level of form) and headtrick has been a stable and reliable awper.

Expected. Nothing against Aleksi, but it seems his IGL style doesn't suit this team. But this won't work if brollan keeps being a decoy, headtr1ck and k0nfig have to step up too. Let's wait and see what happens

I thought sergej would be the awp as he used to be one but admittedly that was rather unrealistic much like this team. Also thing I forgot was that as Aerial isn't playing currently, prolly u'd have banjo play or something. I think more realistic havu team that would exist would be something like Aleksib, ottond/podi, xseven, banjo +1. But ofc even to get aleksib seems quite long shot.

This reminds me of Astralis players taking a break for a moment and then returning back. Maybe something related with IRL issues, or just having too large work load on table? And Aleksib was hired for that particular reason only at this time to replace hampus for part-time replacement. Similar to maternity leave things in work life. Competitive life can be cruel and hectic sometimes for a single player especially as in-game leader / captain. G2 situation was different though. The team was looking to be successful again, but it did not get go that way unfortunately with Aleksi. Aleksi just needs to find perfect team again like ENCE almost was. Or if that doesn't happen, he surely finds something else from eSports too. Like lurppis did.

LOL you're not wrong. It's just sad to see teams who have a good chance of making it somewhere just squander it. I really thought NIP was going to improve significantly when they acquired Brollan from Fnatic, but when they turned it into an international lineup, I'm sure that had a huge effect on him. Then with the pickup of AleksiB, headtrick, and konfig, it really looked like they were headed in the right direction. AleksiB brought them the structure they needed, but I guess he didn't get the team results quick enough, so management axed him.

He has made 2 players have the worst 6 month stretch of their career. Created multiple role clashes that he never fixed. And was the igl for maybe 2 of the worst come back loss chokes in CS history. He's had 6 months and 5 bootcamps. He's fuckin bad. EVERY player besides old Finnish lineups he IGLs plays under their potential. Please. Show me ANYTHING that says he's a good IGL.

Actually, somehow that's a very decent point, while we see Rez and Brollan play poorly, we tend to forget that igl has a massive part in that

I agree on some levels but NIP never wanted to let go of hampus so he is not recycled IMO, he just came back. I didn't expect him to come back TBH since things was starting to look good with aleksi after looking terrible at first when adapting to the more structured calling.
2023-06-15 11:13

I have said since the news about his return dropped that the only way to get Hampus back into the NIP roster was if he goes back to IGL and I got called an idiot. Didn't think that this was going to happen but I'm glad hampus is back! I feel really bad for alakesi though.. the team was just starting to work good under his style of CS..

People like hampus are wasted talent because they're forced to IGL. They just need a dedicated IGL who can give the rest of the team most of the roles that each individual wants.

I don't think NIP are forcing hampus to IGL, I think he was very disappointed when aleksi joined and he lost his IGL role. In the early interviews with hampus after NIP signing aleksi, he is always saying "I'm not IGL anymore, thats aleksi", he says it a lot in their content on youtube as well and I can feel a smidge of displeasure while he's saying it :) I think that was a decision made by the management and that he "needed a break" shortly after because he was not very happy with this. Just my take on it, I could be totally wrong!

That's a valid point and is vert plausible. However, I just don't see hampus being as impactful when he's IGLing. I think he's better off just focusing on being a consistent rifler.

GL aleksib. He is not fully responsable for the team's mistakes, and I think they might do more changes. Brollan has imho been a one trick pony unfortunately. That team needs some structure, better protocols, and be better at activating players. Info plays were pretty bad also. Maybe hampus comes back with new ideas and improvements? Did he grind with IGL mindset though?

This a joke. I'm surprised Nip gave up on their Aleksi igl belief that fast, although i have a feeling Nip wants to throw shit at the wall and see what sticks, so Aleksi might as well comeback to igl and Hampus could take konfig's role or someone else

Would be very discouraging for the players to make the decision that way. I bet they want to turn full swedish cuz otherwise this decision makes no fucking sense. They can get decent ROI on headtrick as well as konfig so they might even not lose that much money.

It seems that teams get fed up with aleksib in no time. I think it's personality based more than anything. I think he has kind of the same issues elige used to have (shutting down, visibly losing confidence., going silent etc). I think it is a shame, as he seems to have a very good understanding of the game in general. I hope he can improve on this quickly, in whatever way possible, as his career is about to fade out otherwise. It's now or never.

I am not a fan of him, but I still hope he can find strength to fix his overly depressed/resigning attitude, which obviously is his main issue. You see other IGL's temporarily looking resigned during a match, but they quickly move on and resets. Aleksib seems to have great trouble resetting when everything isn't going as planned (it never does.)
