steel's Valve ban set to elapse in January 2025

The Canadian revealed he will be allowed to participate in Valve-sponsored events following the 10-year anniversary of the iBUYPOWER bans.

steel can return to competitive Counter-Strike after the 10-year anniversary of his ban

Joshua "steel" Nissan's "permanent" ban from Valve-sponsored events is set to elapse on January 26, 2025, the Canadian has revealed in a bombshell Tweet.

When contacted by HLTV in regards to whether other members tied to the infamous iBUYPOWER matchfixing scandal had also been unbanned, steel said he hadn't asked about their situations.

"I was told my criteria and why they [Valve] set a specific date for me, so I'd assume they would have similar time frames and situations," steel told HLTV.

The 33-year-old returned to Counter-Strike in July after a three-year stint playing professional VALORANT for the likes of 100 Thieves, T1, and Disguised, and has since been plying his trade for Bad News Bears in ESL Challenger League North America.

The move to Riot's shooter was, at least in part, motivated by steel's "permanent" ban from Valve-sponsored events, which rendered him ineligible to compete in the Major cycle and therefore made it unlikely he would be signed to play for an organization on a long-term basis.

steel was among seven names implicated in the infamous iBUYPOWER matchfixing scandal in 2015. An investigation by Richard Lewis revealed the team had intentionally lost a game against NetcodeGuides.com in August 2014, but action wasn't taken by Valve until a follow-up article from Lewis on January 16, 2015 added further, damning evidence that the players and other individuals around them had fixed the result for profit.

The game developer issued a public statement ten days later, entitled "Integrity and Fair Play," in which they issued indefinite bans to four of the iBUYPOWER members and three people who helped orchestrate the fix. Tyler "Skadoodle" Latham famously avoided a ban as he did not accept the skin profits from the throw.

The following names were indefinitely banned by Valve:

United States Sam "DaZeD" Marine
United StatesBraxton "swag" Pierce
Canada Keven "AZK" Lariviere
Canada Joshua "steel" Nissan
United States Derek "dboorN" Boorn
United States Casey Foster
United States Duc "cud" Pham

In a follow-up statement nearly a full year later, those bans were clarified by Valve to be permanent, ending speculation that the players may get a second chance.

A form of a second opportunity did arise in July 2017 when ESL and DreamHack lifted bans for their own tournaments for players indefinitely banned before February 15, 2015, offering the iBUYPOWER members the ability to compete in some top-tier events outside of Majors and tournaments organized by other operators.

steel was the only one of the banned players to seize the opportunity and successfully revive his Counter-Strike career as he broke into the top 20 with two different lineups over the following three years.

He qualified for three Big Events as the captain of Ghost — ESL One Belo Horizonte 2018, DreamHack Masters Stockholm 2018, and ESL Pro League Season 8 Finals — and led them to a handful of victories over notable European opposition. The team also won WESG 2018 Canada Regional Finals and ZOTAC Cup Masters Americas Finals, all results which helped bring new North American talent into the limelight.

He later did the same with Chaos in early 2020, but stepped back from competition upon the release of VALORANT, which offered him the ability to compete at the highest level — an opportunity unavailable to him in Counter-Strike as no top organization wanted to build a team around an in-game leader ineligible to compete at Majors.

That Major ban, confirmed by Valve to be permanent in 2016, is now set to elapse upon the ten-year anniversary of the original iBUYPOWER ban on January 26, 2025. Over a year into Counter-Strike 2's competitive cycle, steel will be able to compete in Valve events again, including standing behind a team as coach.

"On the 10 year mark in January 2025, I will be allowed to participate at Valve partnered events," steel said on Twitter. "Against all odds, I've never given up. I'm ready to be defined by something new and more positive,"

He is asking why they changed their minds. And missing an entire carreer seems a good enough punishment in almost everyones book.(also valve apperently). Its close to a permanent ban.

It isnt a permanent ban but I understand that 10 years out of a sport is going to hurt your carreer prospects so immensely that there is a very low chance like less than 1% than you will see them back in the game again at a top level. And steel is the only one from that roster that is willing to come back and doing alot to want to come back.

Yeah but they haven’t gotten banned so they will act oblivious to it. Typical from HLTV but whatever. IBP made their mistake and owned up to it and got banned for a lot longer than they should have. Would be great for steel to have a comeback along with brax. Even if steel isn’t pew pewing. He would make a great coach.

Actually, the thing that was the most frustrating about the iBP bans was other people DID get banned afterwards, but they didn't receive permanent bans like iBP did. It was the biggest sticking point to me at the time, since Valve's stance was literally, "well, they did it first so we set a precedent" but the problem was that they'd never publicly spoken about gambling to begin with, despite clearly knowing it existed at the time. It was an extremely unfair situation because none of the players had any reason to suspect they'd get a permanent ban, other players afterwards didn't get permanent bans, and Valve basically just used it as a soapbox platform to preach about gambling being bad, and integrity in e-sports, when they'd kept their mouth shut about gambling from the start because skins were making them money hand-over-fist (and still do, they purposely don't refund skins to people if they get scammed because, shocker, more money for them). Not to mention that in 2014 the money you made off of CS as a profession was incredibly small relative to now. It was also even more frustrating to me that a player like swag took such a tremendous hit, because he was only 18 when it happened, which means it's pretty fair to say there was an emotional/maturity component to the whole thing. Everyone on that team, barring Skadoodle, was mid-20's at the time and I'm sure he felt compelled to be a part of that.

Different crimes, different punishments. Valve needed to make a statement back then. Matchfixing brings real world crime into the scene while cheating is condemned by the majority and will be a niche therefore as long as that.

Read between the lines (or literally in this case). What he means is that more players from recent time should be banned! It's almost like the community has given green light to matchfixing, that it's OK. I agree with the Norwegian. If they were able to bann iBP-players like this, then keep acting on the same matter! Don't just make one action and think that will scare others from doing it for the past 10 years ......

that's not comparable though. if steel killed 1 people then FaZe and heroic are genocides

I was extremely sad when he got banned indefinitely. Yes he deserved the ban, but to me cheating is so much worse, because you damage your club, mate, sponsors, scene image all together and you profit from that. Here is just made one mistake in a shitty match when they barely made a living and he got the longest ban. Yes matchfixing is a scumbag move, but they were the first to get caught and they should have got a reasonable treatment. And to add to this, he was and still is so passionate about the game, he has a great mind for the game, he was a valuable asset to any team looking for an IGL. I'm glad he is coming back but it took Valve too long to do something.

If he didn't get caught, he would keep doing it. It's financial fraud, he should go to prison for shit like that, not get banned by valve.

What is worse is that they were moving on to something bigger apparently back then so they threw before breaking up, which is weird asf, but they did it because they didnt earn much. IMO I'm sure they didn't even realize what matchfixing was back then. So that punishment was extremely severe.
2023-10-26 11:09

yeah the punishment is harsh but was really black and white back then. coaching ban is just as bad if not woose and the scams are effecting more people. just lift the steel ban

I won't say he shouldn't have been punished, matchfixing is bad and I won't dispute that, but it was also a low-stakes game and the first case of matchfixing. In DOTA 2, the first matchfixer (Solo) only got a year. Steel should have been unbanned years ago.

I am sure Richard Lewis is crying right now. From joy my mens! He himself always struggled with the „infinite“ punishment for the players, despite him bringing the guys wrongdoings on valves doorstep. You can call him a manchild or what ever, but this dude has a heart and a moral compass like nobody I know of in this scene.

richardlewis.substack.com/p/prologue-no-.. "The ban was life with no appeal, in my view a brutally disproportionate punishment that was issued not based on the merits of what had occurred but instead issued to make an example of the players. That type of punitive measure might scare some people straight but it also is a gesture that implicitly states we’d rather simply have to not think about this at all, that it is so rare we can simply issue these draconian punishments with a wave of a hand. And of course as I would find out it wasn’t rare."

Even Richard Lewis thought it was way overkill. He had steel on his show if I remember correctly, they didn't seem to have any issue with each other.

It may come as a shock to you, but just saying whatever's on your mind isn't generally a great idea most of the time, and there's a reason why certain things are limited. Most people take freedom of speech to mean they can say whatever they want, which is silly, because there's plenty of scenarios where you know that's not true.

To be honest, even though Steel is not a great player at this point, he could definitely be an effective coach. I would be shocked if he could be an effective IGL at 35, but what the fuck do I even know? He's been a good leader in the past, so maybe I'm stupid. I still feel like his route will be in coaching rather than playing, but I'd be happy to see him prove me wrong.

Re-create Complexity elige situation. I think NA has a few t1 players, but a lot of really strong t1.5 t2 players. NA has always had gifted individuals, but rarely good teams. we need steel, auti, Twistzz/NAF, even stew, etc. to EACH find a squad of high potential t2-t3 players from the NA region and COMMIT to the grind up to t1 so we can have a real region of teams like BR. Idk how many orgs can actually afford that(EG for sure) but I think thats the best way to develop NA. Cant expect NA to be strong globally without a foundation first.
