The Russian AWPer has found a new home after the mysterious decision to step down from Cloud9.

sh1ro will land in a new team going into 2024

Spirit are set to announce the signing of Dmitry "⁠sh1ro⁠" Sokolov to their Counter-Strike roster, sources have revealed to HLTV.org.

The 22-year-old is making the move from Cloud9, where he has been transfer-listed since he made a surprise decision to step down from the team in late October.

The move comes at an odd time for Spirit as they recently won BetBoom Dacha with victories over FURIA, MIBR, and most impressively Virtus.pro, and Spirit's current AWPer, Artem "⁠ArtFr0st⁠" Kharitonov, was one of the key players in that run. However, it had already been completed beforehand.

sh1ro steps down from Cloud9

sh1ro was a key part of the Gambit Youngsters roster that broke out during the online era and went on to help the team win IEM Dallas 2022. He was named HLTV's fourth-best player in the world in 2021 and the third in 2022.

Barring other changes, Spirit will be:

hallzerk has always been an average awper tho. we haven't seen any AWPers fall off because of CS2. SunPayus probably has the biggest differential but he's also leaving ENCE and has a new IGL so it's hard to say his poor performance is because of CS2

I don't think so, sh1ro likes to talk a lot (in-game wise) and take control that may make all the others feel uncomfortable in their plays. but for now with artfr0st spirits looks good, so for me it feels like a down grade. obviously in potential wise and skill wise sh1ro is better.

shiro did decide to bench himself yes, but in what world do you as an org allow that to happen and not just get boombl4 from the start for hobbit instead of waiting for it to get that far hobbit has a history of these kind of things btw, if you know from his time in that gambit roster that won the major, it apparently fell apart due to personal conflicts between the players

But like think of it like this spirit have in the past never gone for these top tier players, they have always focused on bringing together mid tier players and creating a top tier team through good dynamics, and then after that they switched to fostering young talent and creating a strong bonded team over time. This is not only an odd move for the team but for the entire org, spirit have never done something like this before they have never gone for the big fish when it comes to players. Im just curious as to what the driving force behind this decision is and whether or not its really as simple as shiro being better, because im pretty sure it isnt. But then again what do i know right, 99% chance im wrong but thats just what my guts telling me, i feel like its a mix of experience and leadership + skill that enticed spirit to sign shiro, i think his experience can help donk + zontix to improve and get advice and teaching from chopper hally and now shiro who has experience neither hally nor chopper has that he can impart on the younger players.

Well, i honestly think is just a combination on things. I think that first shiro was probably cheap depending on how long he signed his contract when the while team was bought by c9, spirit probably has more money now considering they won their 2nd dota international this year so probably the sponsors are knocking their door. They might also ride the tide of succes from their dota team to try to be tier 1 at cs as well considering they already have donk to help with that and also results. And they might just want to sign shiro for cheap and sell him later to just make profit as as i said previously he might be cheap rn as benched and maybe close to contract expiry and will sell for a lot if he keeps performing as on csgo. Also he might help decelop donk and sell him for even more. He might also bring even more money / sponsors considering the name. So overall he is a bet that has a lot of up sides and might elevate spieit on a lot of different areas. Tho i feel sad for artfrost and i hope he gets bought by a tier 1.5 team atleast, im never fan of those moves of replacing young talents and especially when they are winning as i think chemistry plays a bigger role than most people think

Yea but Spirit is an org that often doesn't spend alot or refuses to break bank. Usually prefers to develop talent and use them like MOUZ. The only logical explanation for why they're breaking bank for once is probably because of donk. tbh, I wasn't expecting much from him in the BBDacha playoffs, but he stepped up and became very crucial. Not the kind of awper with "flashy highlights" (even he tries to flick A LOT), but very consistent. He was improving very slow, compared to zont1x and donk. Having "ok" ratings for an awper playing T2 tournaments but aspiring to play big T1 LANs. I think he would find a new home pretty soon; Jerry's Parivision, Forze, or even Betboom if zorte goes international.

I think next year we will see more T1.5 - T2 events from lesser known organisers with decent price pools like BB dacha, Pari etc. Also Spirit should be able to qualify for some ESL events. Agreed, super unjustified, especially with how it ruins the spirit roles. Magixx plays the exact same roles, and is 2nd caller, same as sh1ro nearly 1:1. Either magixx stops doing these riles, which he had been doing for years at this point, or they have told sh1ro, who is super passive, to play the proggressive and aggressive roles of artfr0st. This move just won't work, its a total downgrade imo.

So basically spiritgot rid of w0nderful for nothing. Lets be real here, they got rid of wonderful to make room for artfr0st, who is the 2nd best player on their team stats wise, and the team has won multiple games and tournaments against very tough, mostly russian opponents who most people hold in high regard, for nothing. He's been on the team for 5 months, and i doubt he's being transfered to another russian team in the next few weeks before the major qualifiers start. Besides the fact Sh1ro still complains about not understanding CS2, he has not properly transitioned to CS2, is a 2nd calling awper, when magixx is doing that role already... this on paper is a disastrously bad pickup for spirit. His roles don't fit, he's practically taking over everything magixx does and has been doing for years, and leaving him to fill the roles of artfr0st unless they plan to give the most passive awper super aggressive and progressive roles, and tell him to shut up and leave the 2nd calling to magixx, which realistically, you can't do, and he wouldn't join spirit if this was the case. Overall L move. Downgrade even imo.

unfortunately, when you have someone like sh1ro on the market, it’s impossible to not pass up on the opportunity, and plus Spirit likely wants donk to stay for as long as possible before he inevitably departs the team in the distant future. Having someone like sh1ro on the team would likely motivate him to stay longer.

Spirit is one of the richest orgs in the esports industry. If they want him to stay, he will. They don't have a money problem. They strongly believe in nurturing their own players from their own program. This move is so good for them when you look at the headlines, but so bad on paper. Not to mention this completely resets all progress since now players need to readjust roles. Spirit as it is now, with how good theyve been, is good enough to make playoffs in the major. They didn't need this move, this move is bad in-game wise. Merch sales will skyrocket for sure, morale perhaps too, but the moment the players get back in the server and start losing games they wouldve won by still having artfr0st and not switching up their roles, it will be too late. +sh1ro only makes sense if you -magixx, and reduce artfr0st to rifle, but let him keep his prior roles. Then everything would work. It would be a near perfect match, because sh1ro plays the same roles and does midround calling just like magixx. This will create the same troubles sh1ro had at C9 with nafany and hobbit, 3 callers.

They don't have a money problem but if you've noticed, Spirit in CS almost never spends bank on players. Instead they scout, produce, and develop talent in the CIS region and just uses them and either keeps them around or sells them off. And frankly, the main reason why they decided to break bank for once is probably because of donk. To motivate him to continue staying with the org for as long as possible before he inevitably departs in the future.

Guess thay makes sense -magixx would still be the best move since they have similar roles and 2nd call -artfr0st leads to players taking roles they havent had before, or forcing magixx to take them all and stop being 2nd caller, completely changing up his play style. -magixx is the move man.

This could be iffy. In CSGO I would say sh1ro was almost on par with the woo, s1mple and devve but in CS2 a lot of top AWPers have fallen off a lot, and sh1ro is one of them. Only the future will tell if this will be worth. Because artfrost is actually promising.

people are wondering why spirit would ever get rid of artfrost. it's simple: when you find an absolutely game changing player on the market that will instantly make your team 10 times better, you take it. this is the same situation NIP was in back in 2021. you have a solid foundation and a good team, albeit it has issues. suddenly, a wild devve shows up on your doorstep. NIP had issues but nawwk was FAR from a problem. well, tough shit nawwk, you're gone. you don't pass up a transcended player like that, ever.

In my opinion it's not good change. I'm a fan of sh1ro, but he won't be effective in Spirit since they need agressive awper. Artfrost was great player in team, make crazy shots, flicks, noscopes. Sh1ro doesn't do that, he's too passive, of course, he's stable and reliable player, but not the type of +W style player that all Spirit present right now. It's downgrade for both sites for me

But sh1ro is regarded as a great player so bc he wants to play for them while they're doing well, Spirit will kick out their awper for him. Yeah but I think Spirit shouldn't do it, I agree that sh1ro is a good player, but ArtFr0st proved to be really good aswell, and honestly, like, this Spirit teams just works, everyone seems comfortable in their positions, no weak points really, I think this is the sort of team that has no reason to make change and that's why I don't like it. From sh1ro it's great to join a team like this if he got an offer, it's more bad on Spirit side I think.
