Valve releases final ranking update before Shanghai Major RMRs

Everything is set for the RMRs to take place in all three regions.

Valve has released its October 15 Regional Standings update, which will be the final ranking update before the Perfect World Shanghai Major RMRs. As such, it will determine the seeding and the opening matchups for the Europe, Americas and Asia RMR tournaments, in line with Valve's Major supplemental rulebook. Perfect World are expected to confirm the seedings and matchups shortly.

PW Shanghai Major RMR rosters revealed

Natus Vincere serve as the top seed in Europe RMR A thanks to their consistency across the year, whilst G2's stellar form at BLAST Fall Final was enough to haul them up the Valve rankings and ensure the top billing in RMR B. FURIA's strong performance in Rio ensured they pipped Liquid to the first seed in Americas RMR, whilst The MongolZ grabbed the No.1seed in Asia.

The RMRs will take place November 11-24, starting with Asia and ending with Europe. The Europe and Americas RMRs will utilize a 16-team, BO1 Swiss System format to determine Major berths, with progression and elimination matches being BO3. Asia will utilize an eight-team, double-elimination bracket, where only the opening matches are BO1.

Fourteen teams from the Europe RMRs, seven from the Americas RMR and three from the Asia RMR will progress to the Major. The top eight European squads will head straight to the Elimination stage, while the rest will start their journey in the Opening Stage.

I dont understand these bo1 opening rounds with 1 v 8 playing eachother instead of 1 v 16. Swiss needs to get thrown in the trash can. They actually have a competent seeding system now. Just do something normal or at least more fair then bullshit Swiss + Bucholz.

Copenhagen had Valve Rankings seeding + The two best teams in the world played eachother in the quarterfinal. Also, if I remember correctly a lot of seeding for Paris (and previous majors) was done based on results from the Open, Closed, RMR, and Challenger results which is atrocious considering you play 2-3 bo1s every swiss or based on past performance where a team in the span of 6 months can go from like top 10 to top 20 and be seeded way too high.
2024-10-15 21:19

The ranking of the teams and the Swiss format seeding are two completely different things. If your team rankings are fucked, sure 1v9 Swiss won't fix it all for you. But if you do have good team rankings, then 1v16 Swiss will most certainly fuck it all up.

You compared 2 different events with completely different seeding systems to say if 1v16 or 1v9 is better. Now the team rankings are at the worst of times like 3 rankings off. 1v16 + bo3s would be far better than the weird 1v9 bo1 start.

Why does valve keep this 1 vs 9 bullshit. It didn't make sense before but now that you have an actual ranking for the whole season why are you penalizing the 9 seed to play against the best team and the 16 team has plays the 8th seed...
2024-10-15 21:00

It's not about a single match. If you lose to number 1 seed, then the next round you get the easiest opponent from the loser pool to compensate. The harder the first match, the easier the second match. This is how a Swiss-system should always be seeded.
2024-10-15 21:13

hell no. And we have proof of it with Falcons/EF and Liquid in the previous major. you have a ranking that determines how well every team has performed. Use it as it should be, not trying to fabricate easy path that will just mess up everything The 16-best team in a RMR should not have an easier opening matchup than 9-15 teams, period.

IT'S NOT ABOUT A SINGLE MATCH. The Swiss system is meant to be used with 1v9.

I was also saying this alot before, but some research showed that if you do it like this (1vs9, 2vs10 etc) there is much bigger chance for the round 5 matchups to be more fair. With the 1vs16, 2vs15 system, the 9th and 10th team in the seeding had a higher chance to get an easier matchup in round 5 than the 8th seeded team.
2024-10-15 21:26

Why should we care about a system that tries to "make it fair" to the 8th seed instead of making it easier for the best teams? All this system was good for was avoiding the best teams matching up with newly formed teams that couldn't get enough "valve ranking points". And that wasn't even the truth anyway. Now that there's a ranking for the full year there's no excuse for having Navi/G2 play Fnatic/NiP in first round instead of Unity and TSM

I don't disagree, but It really goes both ways, mainly because there are still these stupid bo1 mr12 rounds that often result in fluke wins. But as I said, for fairness over all 5 rounds it is much better when the 1st round (just the 1st one) isn't with matches between 8th and 9th + 7th and 10th. You could easily do 1vs16 with rematches, but that would be even worse I think.
2024-10-16 01:01

With 1v16 it's impossible for the top8 seeded teams all to advance. Valve using 1v16 with Swiss system in some prior Majors was nothing but their own misguided invention.
