Top 20 players of 2024: Final list

The countdown of 2024's best players has come to a close.

Yes, it's that time of the year again: The next iteration of the traditional Top 20 players ranking is almost upon us.

This year, we begin the countdown on December 25. That's when you'll learn the 20th-best player of 2024, and we'll unveil one name each day until we reach the HLTV Awards night on January 11.

There, in Belgrade, Serbia, a plethora of Panel, Community and HLTV awards will be handed out, including the coveted title of the Player of the Year.

Top 20 players of 2024 prediction game goes live

1. Statistics: The top 20 players ranking is based on the numbers players recorded at notable events over the year, but it's not just about the final rating, as more advanced metrics come into play. Also, context is important, such as how players performed in the biggest matches and under the lights, against the best opposition, and in competitions for the biggest trophies.

2. Awards: Throughout the year we handed out Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Exceptionally Valuable Player (EVP) awards for every notable event. These play a crucial role in the ranking, but it's worth keeping in mind that one award does not necessarily equal another, as they differ in grades, and the level of competition comes into play as well.

The EVPs and Best Five of PW Shanghai Major

2024 events considered and categories
— Super-elite: IEM Katowice, PGL CS2 Major Copenhagen, IEM Cologne, Perfect World Shanghai Major
— Elite: BLAST Premier Spring Final, BLAST Premier Fall Final, BLAST Premier World Final
— Big: IEM Chengdu, ESL Pro League S19, IEM Dallas, Esports World Cup, ESL Pro League S20, IEM Rio
— Medium: BetBoom Dacha Belgrade, YaLLa Compass, BetBoom Dacha Belgrade S2
— Non-award: BLAST Premier Groups, IEM Katowice/Cologne Play-ins, Major Opening stages and RMRs

3. Sample size: The higher the sample size, the more accurately performances can be judged. If a player didn't compete at the highest level on a regular basis, or they entered the top-tier circuit during the year, they're likely to be brought down a notch or not considered at all.

4. Recency bias: It is human to remember more from recent tournaments, but in determining the ranking the whole year is considered equally important.

Malbs didn't play high level for half a year. Don't deserve Top 20, despite the great perfomance on G2. XANTARES perfomed amazing, but played very few matches and only half of them were tier-S. Ropz showed up when it was needed the most. It counts a lot!

I don't understand this line of reasoning, given two trophies and two semi-final finishes in what is essentially his breakout year. He hasn't been getting carried, and in many cases was essential in key games within these finishes. If you don't believe me look at the similar stats between Snax and Hooxi, then comparing the sheer force that G2 have become after Nexa -> Malbs. Granted, I don't think we've seen his peak and he still has a lot of room to grow. Somewhere between 18-20 is completely earned

While #3 and #4 definitely bring Malbs down, in the second half of the year he has been playing on a top 10-12 level. Furthermore, his EPL S19 Lperformance while on M80 should yield him further credibility. With this in mind, 18-20 seems fair. I’d lend a similar credibility to Xantares. Ropz has been great in big moments, but his performance in the first half of the year is enough to bring him down to the 14-17 range.

Yea I agree, but I think they will try to squeeze malbs on the list.. thought I have the same opinion as you.. same for elige and xantares The question is how will they look on donks horrible performance in Cologne.

In January he played teams like Liquid and GL. In April BB and G2. In almost all such games he was 1.2+. Then similar performances since joining G2 and winning trophies. It's impossible he's not in top 20 with his placings and performances with G2, even if he's outside top 10 for playing more tier 2 teams in first half of the year

Well... this puts m0NESY having two elite MVP's to ZywOo's prestige MVP. The tables are back in favour to m0NESY. Also EWC and Dallas only being big events makes things very interesting.

Nowhere does it state that in the article, friend. Not only that, not all rating have bigger impacts over accolades unless the differential is too great; in ZywOo's case, the differential is definitely in favour of ZywOo but enough to ignore the lack of trophies and prestigious accolades? That is the question. My point was: m0NESY was already favoured over ZywOo originally, now with a second elite MVP is he even more favoured, as m0NESY already has more overall prestigious EVP's, now the MVP's nearly match that of ZywOo's, as ZywOo has a prestige MVP and a silver one.

Not only that but in 1 they specify again that the most important stats will be the ones in the most important matches and monesy was much better in Arenas and super elite/elite events. ZywOo's stats are inflated by big events, qualifiers (especially EPL and RMR)

Yeah, that's why m0NESY is still favoured despite having overall weaker statistics. Playoffs, big events and Top X metrics of LAN, All matches and big events go to ZywOo; Major, super-elite and elite go to m0NESY (though the elite events rating is marginal, the super-elite is not). It's just whether HLTV can overlook just how many statistics ZywOo dominates m0NESY in throughout 2024. Either way, both players deserve it, so I'm not really bothered with who gets it.

Monesy also has a bigger sample size, and according to 3 it will also be important. donk really clutched it towards the end, without that last major monesy would have been probably top1.

Yeah, he has more maps, too. Like I stated previously, if not for the sheer number of statistics that ZywOo beats m0NESY in for ZywOo to even have a chance, m0NESY would be guaranteed Top 2 for sure. As it stands right now, though? ZywOo also has a Top 2 profile and also has a chance to place second, which I guess is a testament to how good ZywOo has been this year, too. I have ZywOo second in my prediction but I know m0NESY is favoured to place higher, especially now with BLAST: Fall Finals being considered an elite event.

The problem is that ZywOo did not score high enough at the most opportune moments. After a shaky start of the year yet again with a pretty quiet Katowice and Copenhagen, it was already a mountain to climb yet again for him. Too tall of a task against players of that caliber.

I agree and the fact that he managed to still contend for Top 1 despite having such a dreadful year, and also contending with donk and m0NESY is a testament to his level of consistency. :) I'm truly happy he is even guaranteed Top 3 - it's been amazing to watch all three battle it out all year.

I would not call it a dreadful year by any means, I don't think there has been such competition for top 1 since maybe 2018. It was definitely a little step down compared to 2023 for him, but that's just impossible standards.

I meant to say "dreadful start to a year". Otherwise I agree, 2018 was probably the next closest, with 2020 still being the winner when it came down to the Top 1 race, which was quite literally 50/50.

2020 was the closest between 1 and 2 for sure, even today you can still easily argue a top 1 for s1mple. The fact it was fully online though has to make that year less valuable than others.

Indeed and I stand corrected. :) They must have agreed with your median as opposed to attending teams, which I don't have a problem with. :) It's a good job I never tried to claim it as factual, as it's all assumption until official confirmation is released. In my defense, EWC had an argument to be made for it being an elite event.

tgwri1s trippin not that I expected otherwise but the inconsistency between event categories from year to year is just silly at this point how was IEM Sydney an ELITE (???) event last year and yet Dallas gets shafted this time around? G8 and EWC is literally the exact same shit just rebranded and all mickeyblast events graduated to elite, somehow for the latter I'm sure you could do some mental gymnastics to justify it but Sydney and Dallas???

8-team blasts being above 16-team iems just feels wrong and rigged.. at blast u win 2 group games and go straight to semi finals as for example mouz in rio had to battle through 4 games to get into playoff. both playoffs single elimination 6 teams and bo5 grand final with crowd iems count into grand slam, blasts doesnt like what

The events aren't the same year-to-year, so the elites will naturally change as well. Just compare the BLASTs last year vs. this year. The teams that made it to the finals were significantly stronger in all three in 2024, and that meant the vast majority of matches in those 3 competitions were among top 10 teams = the toughest it can possibly be. That doesn't necessarily make the trophies more prestigious, even if you can make that argument, it just means the stats there are more reliable in showing just how well players competed when the competition was toughest.

I get that. I might disagree and derisively call it mental gymnastics but it's not like there are no arguments for Blast's 8 team banana cups. Yet I feel that Dallas still gets shafted. 16 team event with almost every top ranked team in attendance and without plumbers like Vertex that attended the supposedly elite IEM Sydney...

It was simply more useful for filtering to have BLASTs as the elite this year because of how good the attendance was, instead of the 16 team ones where the floor is still relatively low and there are a lot more lopsided matches. It's worth saying not all big events are at the same level. Chengdu was a bare minimum Big Event and is closer to Medium than to Elites, for example

Well if you think about it since more teams the avg rank per matches is lower, meaning less elite/top10-5 matches so not as good as sample to use as a metric That's how I see it at least like #104

ZywOo would have surely got #1 if not for sp0nx throwing every playoff match. Given donk's best performances came in betboom tournaments which are medium, it's still possible. m0nesy has no chance, 0.07 rating difference is wild.

This sh*t is so funny, in terms of placements NAVI is the favorite, followed by Spirit, G2 third. In terms of HEAD TO HEAD tho, trying to find out the strongest team out of the 3... everything changes! 1. Observations for Ranking: Super-Elite Events: Spirit has two 1st-place finishes, giving them strong super-elite performance. NAVI dominates with a PGL Major win but slightly weaker consistency. G2 is competitive with solid 3-4th places. Elite Events: G2 leads with two 1st-place finishes. NAVI has strong 2nd places but no wins, and Spirit has one win and consistent podium finishes. Big Events: NAVI edges out with three 1st places, while G2 has strong placements across several events. Spirit lags behind here with no wins. -> Ranking: NAVI: Dominance at the PGL Major and multiple Big Event wins solidify their top position. Spirit: Two Super-Elite wins make them highly competitive, though lacking in Big Event dominance. G2: Consistency across Elite and Big Events but no Super-Elite wins drops them to third. 2. Head-to-Head Insights Overall Results: NAVI vs. Spirit: Spirit dominates, winning 5 of 6 matches (Maps: Spirit 12 - 4 NAVI). NAVI vs. G2: Very close, G2 edges out with 6 wins vs. 4 for NAVI (Maps: G2 17 - 13 NAVI). Spirit vs. G2: G2 dominates, winning 7 of 8 matches (Maps: G2 20 - 5 Spirit). Analysis: Spirit excelled against NAVI but struggled significantly against G2. G2’s consistency in head-to-head battles gives them an advantage over both NAVI and Spirit. -> 1. G2, 2nd Spirit, 3rd Navi FINAL RANKING / COMBINATION OF BOTH RANKINGS: 1. Spirit Spirit Super-Elite leader with two 1st-place finishes. Struggled in head-to-head against G2 but dominated NAVI. Moderate success in Elite and Big events. 2. Navi / G2 G2 Consistently strong across all event tiers. Dominant head-to-head record against Spirit and competitive against NAVI. Wins in both Elite and Big events, although no Super-Elite victories. NAVI Super-Elite win (Major) gives them a critical edge. However, weaker head-to-head results and inconsistent performances in Elite and Big events place them below Spirit and G2.

What year head-to-head results were you watching? G2 has won 1 time against navi this year and in maps navi still has the lead.

@Striker Are BLAST Showdowns part of the considered events? Only BLAST Groups is listed, but the level of competition between Showdowns and the RMRs and Kato/Cologne Play-ins is a rough match.

Team awards has little to nothing to do about this top 20. If NiKo and m0nesy carries G2 to every semi on every tournament they play, sometimes even reaching the finals, beating several top 5 teams all the time, obviously they will have very high stats, EVP's and will deserve their spot.

No, that isn't the way it works. You have to prove that you can win too, the ability to win is a huge part of what makes a player good, in fact it is the most important attribute. They also haven't been to every semi final. If they were really 2 of the top 5 players in the world for 2 years in a row, they'd be winning a lot more. Something they do doesn't work, we already know niko is negative/toxic and hard to play with. Just how much of an impact that makes on team mates might be the main reason for their lack of success.

I created this tier list playing/watching cs only a few hours for a year and it is 22 percentile (should disrespect zywoo more next time no doubt). You're ones are pathetic tbh hltv.org/top20/predictions/2024/1833789 Elige is a good player tho. Hltv must remember: you have specially reward for teams. Player's rating is about personal skill

from next year since blast goes full open imo world finals (or what the event will be called) should be put near kato and cologne tbh. same amount of money, same value for the teams, same level (or higher in some ways) of production, bo5 final like kato and cologne i dont see any issue with considering it the same as kato and cologne from 2025

6 players in the top 20 for 2024 have played for MOUZ at some point in their career. 14 players are from Europe, 4 from Asia and 2 from Americas. Despite Brazil and Sweden having notable eras within CS franchise, there is no representation from either countries. Since 2016 when Brazil and Sweden both had 4 players each in the top 20, the domination the nations proved has dwindled with KSCERATO being the most consistent Brazilian and Brollan was the last Swede to feature in 2020. CIS region along with Israel have taken the scene by storm in recent years.
