First matchups set for Stage 3 of Austin Major

Heavy-hitters like Vitality, MOUZ, and Spirit will finally be making their Austin Major debut.

Legacy face a daunting opening match against Vitality after their 3-0 run through Stage 2

With Stage 2 of the BLAST.tv Austin Major drawn to a close, the opening matches for Stage 3 have been determined.

Headlining the high-stakes best-of-ones is a matchup between Aurora and FaZe, the latter of whom scraped into Stage 3 after enduring tough losses to Legacy and 3DMAX.

Vitality, the clear favorites following the early elimination of Falcons, will be looking to put a damper on the Cinderella run of Legacy, who marched through Stage 2-0 with an unblemished record. Other top sides MOUZ and Spirit will be facing off against Virtus.pro and paiN in their respective opening games.

The remaining best-of-ones will feature G2 taking on 3DMAX, The MongolZ facing FURIA in their third event in a row, Natus Vincere squaring off against Nemiga, and Liquid matching into Lynn Vision.

It's seeds 1vs9, 2vs10 ,3vs11 etc basically. Seeds 9&10 are the 3:0s, 11,12,13 are 3:1 Etc

I was thinking about it too, but im not sure it 100% work like that. The team that will win everything will face the best teams in 2:0 anyway, and the team that might lose still can face hard team in 0:1

if it was first 1v16 and so forth, if the best seeded team won every match-up, the top 8 in the seeding wouldn't make the playoffs. that's why they made this change

They could just randomly draw the matchups after round 1. also, the notion that upsets never happen is just insane. Did you watch falcons?

Yeah meeting the best teams on bo1 first rounds is a blessing, you can't meet them again later and they fly up and away while you can clear up the lower stages. Sucks if you lose 2 bo1 in a row tho

Not exactly, you start hard and then it gets easier... imaging stage 2 team 3:0 facing the likes of vitality or spirit if they end up 2:2... thats way worse

its to prevent them having to face the best teams in potential bo3/elimination matches. this seeding is very good.

Because of Buchholz, if 9th seed loses their first game then they get an easy matchup for the second. So it's still fair and in some ways even a good thing since facing 1st seed in the first round means there's no possibility of facing them in a Bo3 later

Do we really think that that 1vs9 2vs10 seeding is better? You are literally being punished for playing a good first stage. Can somebody explain me the benefits of this instead of typical 1vs16 etc?

Basically the system used to determin matchups is shit and instead of coming up with a better one they use this to mitigate it's problems (in the past when it was 1v16, sometimes seed 1 and 2 faced each other in the 2-0 game which is also completely bs)

Buchholz system is kinda like Elo, you get less punished for losing to a better team (ie. a team with a higher seed) and more punished for losing to a worse team (ie. a team with a lower seed). So it works out to more fair matchups in later rounds

So being Lynn 3-2 gives them the easiest opponent, while Legacy going 3-0 faces the best team ever since 2013 NiP

How being the best on stage 2 makes it fair to face the strongest opponent of stage 3? Vitality should be paired with one of the 3-2 teams

Do you think a raffle would be better? I myself would love to see raffle seeding in stage 2 and 3 of the major, it would be more entertaining.
