Evil Geniuses beat Astralis to win ESL One New York 2019

Evil Geniuses needed four maps to beat Astralis in the ESL One New York 2019 final and win the first Big Event title in the history of the team.

All it took was one tournament in a new environment for the North Americans to finally break their Big Event duck. After multiple semi-final finishes and just one final appearance to account for, the team finally have a Big Event title under their belt, and it would be almost impossible to imagine a better way to sign off such a perfect campaign than by taking down an Astralis side eager to build on their Major success and knock Liquid off the throne.

With Liquid no longer around, Evil Geniuses had the crowd at the Barclays Center fully behind them, and they returned the support with a master-class performance that will certainly feed their ambitions to become a regular title contender. They outplayed and outsmarted Astralis for the vast majority of the series - only letting Train slip away as nerves got to them - to remind everyone of their potential and brush off suggestions that the second tournament season of 2019 will be a two-horse race between the Danes and Liquid.

Evil Geniuses made an early statement of intent as they took control from the offset on Inferno, Astralis' map pick, forcing Lukas "gla1ve" Rossander to call his first timeout just five rounds into the game. After catching their breath, Astralis finally managed to break that streak, but the North Americans quickly got back on track and went on another dream run to end a near-flawless CT side display with a commanding 13-2 lead.

More misery was to come for Astralis as they were picked up in the second half pistol. After finding themselves down 2-15, the Danes still attempted a response, but the North Americans would close it out in style in the next round to secure the lead in the series, leaving the Major champions shellshocked at having been on the receiving end of a beatdown.

EG beat Astralis in convincing fashion at the Barclays Center

Astralis bounced back with a clean pistol round on Dust2 before Evil Geniuses replied on a very weak buy as Tarik "tarik" Celik wreaked havoc with a p250 in hand. The North Americans used that momentum to build an early lead, but it would not last as the Danes refused to let the game drift away. The final stages of the half were highly contested, thought things could have taken a different turn had Emil "Magisk" Reif not been in such rich form. The 21-year-old was a nuisance for EG throughout the half on the B site, racking up 16 frags and averaging 130 damage as Astralis took a narrow 8-7 lead into the break.

You can find the best CSGO betting sites here.

A successful A split in the second half pistol kicked Astralis further into the lead and marked the beginning of a solid streak from the Danish side. But as soon as Evil Geniuses' players began to hit their shots, the Terrorists fell off the pace. gla1ve's charges looked shaken as the North Americans started to narrow the gap and made some uncharacteristic mistakes, such as letting the clock run out twice. With the momentum firmly in their favour, EG kept Astralis' players at bay and locked down the map in convincing fashion after winning nine rounds in a row.

The North Americans carried their momentum into Train and raced to a 7-2 lead on the CT side after preventing their opponents from stringing rounds together or building up an economy. Astralis then picked up the pace and gradually took the upper hand, bringing the deficit to a solitary round after a dominant run in the closing stages of the half.

Evil Geniuses further added to their lead after taking the second half pistol, but then Peter "dupreeh" Rasmussen came to Astralis' rescue with the Desert Eagle. That round breathed new life into the Danish team and welded them together, but the former NRG squad would soon regain control of proceedings. They reached championship point at 15-11 but could not deliver the final blow, allowing Astralis to force overtime after a series of nail-biting rounds.

Magisk kept Astralis in the match, but to no avail

The first overtime could not determine a winner as both teams won two rounds on the CT side, with Evil Geniuses coming back from two map points down. But then a lackluster defensive display on their part in the second overtime proved costly and allowed Astralis to run rampant and finally get a map on the board in this series.

Evil Geniuses looked unfazed by the setback on Train and got off to a flying start on Nuke as they strolled to an 8-1 lead on the Terrorist side. The game was starting to get away from Astralis, but the Danes tightened up their defense and won the remaining rounds of the half to keep their comeback hopes alive.

But this time around there would be no stopping Evil Geniuses. The North Americans kept a water-tight defense and won the opening six rounds of the half to get within touching distance of victory. A triple-kill from Magisk put Astralis on the board, but the Danes' hopes were then crushed as Ethan "Ethan" Arnold clutched a 1v2 situation before tarik secured the map for his team with a crucial trio of kills.

Honestly Liquid haven't looked like themselves at all since the player break. They may not beat EG right now. They felt a little more normal in that Astraslis loss but I don't think they're ready to win again. I thought EG would do this at the major, but I'm glad they finally won a real event.

I don't think Astralis are underperforming, I just think more teams are closer to their level. EG have been one of the best teams for a while but they just could not get past semi-final matchups. Guess it finally happened.

Somewhere around top 10? They're already 4th before update. Don't see any reason they wouldn't keep NRG's spot considering it's the same 5 players and coach, would be a pretty retarded system if that wasn't the case.

It's almost like both players have access to the same gun. Still nowhere near as big of a change as the old awp nerf. Players just have to adapt. If they havent adapted by now it's their own fault. It's really not a hard change to make and it's literally their job.

CS is just a random game as you might know if you ever played it. Sometimes the worse team get's hot, sometimes you win vs players better than you. I am not saying EG didn't deserve the win I am saying SG meta is even less skill dependant than the usual one.

It all depends because right now EG is not even in the ranking but if they are going keep NRG ranking spot then sure they will be top 3 nrg has 450 points and TL has 800 so they will not drop to top 3 after 1 event maybe after Malmö which is in 2 days

If I can remember, when MIBR took SK gaming roster, they took too the spot in the ranking, if that happens with EG/NRG, they will be Top 2 dude, because Liquid losing more points, Astralis ascending to 1... (Edit: I was reading, and if EG got a good position in Malmö, they'll be definitely top 2)
2019-09-30 02:33

My understanding is the team points are set eg achievements, form etc. Then they are split equally by players within the team. Eg if you lose 1 player you will lose 20% of your rank. But since full roster moved they should lose no points. I may be talking out of my ass though idk

EG wins a Tournament with 200k prize pool, and from the 4th goes to 1st? Nice bait. Astralis second with only 100 points below TL, wins the major and didn't go like 1st, EG will be only 3, TL 2

I feel like I’m being misinterpreted here... I think EG played great and totally deserved the win..! Yesterday they were the better team by far. I actually wrote several posts stating this and congratulating the NA fans. Please check my previous posts if you don’t believe me. My comment on drug testing was not specifically aimed at EG - I see why it could come across like that... I could have elaborated more. I just think drug testing should be done in general at big tournaments.

It's called adrenaline you dopey fuck. Theyve beaten them multiple times recently so are confident and want to win a tournament with their brand new org. And they do random drug tests so who is going to risk their entire career to cheat against a team theyve already shown they can beat. Salty euro

Congratulations to Evil Geniuses. Great matches, great final where we get to see 4 maps. EG seem to have a good mappool and are definately going to be a top contender for the #1 spot if they keep up the level they showed in this tournament. Crazy to think that in under 48 hours they will have to play again at DreamHack Malmø.

So fucking proud of the boys. They played their hearts out. Even after that comeback by Astralis on train, they kept their cool and closed it out asap. Tells a lot about their growth as a team and their mental fortitude going forward. Not to mention how good it must feel for EG as an org. First tournament and first win. What a way to make a return to CS. They definitely made the right move in getting this roster. GGWP

When Astralis wins the news headline has so many different adjectives to make Astralis great, but when a team beats Astralis it's a simple "beat".

That's because astralis won so much they need to reinvent the headline so it doesn't become retundant. I have no horse in the race since danes and muricans are pretty much the same to me but astralis are still the kings and the most succesful CS GO team of all time, a tier 2 event win sponsored by SG doesn't change that. EG are pretty damn good though, adderall and all.

This was pretty much a stomping. Sure EG dropped train after OT, but they absolutely facerolled Astralis on Vertigo and Nuke. On Dust II once EG built a CT economy it was all over. GGWP, I'm sure it wasn't ez for EG but they definitely made it look so.

Great finals, if it would have been BO3 it would be fairly boring. Train was great and i was expecting better things from ast on nuke. I also dont like they are not playing in sound-proof booths, i dont believe this is comfortable playing so close to big loud crowd...

Insanely well played by EG. Truly deserved. They were so hyped, that noone would ever beat them yesterday. Dont underestimate the crowd though. They helped a lot. Rematch in Malmø? :)

Seeing this tag makes me nostalgic, but its nvidia vs crowd cheating, may the best win.

"2EZ4EG" "EG > Astralis > Liquid" "EG 100% WR" "EG TOP 1 TEAM" one word: Bullshit Just because they won Major against the well-known team, you guys considered them as the best of the best. Then here some fact u need to know EG lose to Grayhound and Mousesport without a SINGLE WIN on the map at Dreamhack Malmo 2019 Grayhound (0-1), Mousesport (0-2) EG won against Astralis because Crowding help (reference, Inferno u can see CLEARY the Crowd helping them) EG is one of the good team, however, PEOPLE THESE DAYS, JUST CONSIDERED THEM AS A GOD, just because they won against Astralis Dreamhack Malmo 2019 "But, EG was too tired cuz final BO5, that they didn't have enough rest" Then look at Astralis that do the same, but still win all the round clean. Look at the Liquid still dominating even though they lost 1 game. Mousesport and Grayhound is a mid-tier team, that EASILY, YEAH VERY EASILY BEAT EG... Hey I know, let's say in this way... 2EZ4GRAYHOUND BEATS OUT OF SHIT EG 2EZ4MOUSESPORT BO3, CLEAN WIN 2 ROUNDS AGAINST EG 2EZ4EG? MORE LIKE CROWDING HELP HAHA EG SUCK CAN'T EVEN WIN A SINGLE FKNG GAME . . . Please NA people, think..... EG is good, BUT NOT THE BEST.... (Don't get me wrong, I believe EG is a very good team, however, u guys PRAISE them TOO MUCH, that make me sick of it, if u think i'm wrong? GET HELP)
