Jonji steps down from Bad News Bears

The 22-year-old is leaving the active roster after their elimination from DreamHack Open September.

Jonathan "⁠Jonji⁠" Carey has announced that he has stepped down from Bad News Bears, bringing about an end to his tenure with the team that dates back to the roster's creation in January.

The move comes after a dismal end to the team's DreamHack Open September campaign, which ended in heartbreaking fashion after the team conceded two large leads — 10-5 on Overpass, 15-6 on Inferno — to TeamOne in their Group A decider match.

Despite winning Fragadelphia 15 over Party Astronauts just two weeks ago, the team's elimination from DreamHack Open September and earlier group stage exit from the BLAST Premier Fall Showdown qualifier have now led to Jonji taking his leave, stating that he was holding the roster back from finding success.

"Like most people have said I was holding that roster back probably and am going to step down for the foreseeable future," the Canadian rifler said after the loss. "I want to put my energy and faith into a project I feel it is reciprocated."

Jonji's departure comes at an untimely moment for Bad News Bears, who are slated to play in IEM Fall North America in ten days. Due to rosters for the event already being locked, the team will need to utilize coach Nathan "⁠madcow⁠" Retterath, thereby incurring a 20% penalty to their Regional Major Ranking points — leaving them with 456.

Should they still manage to place in the top five, Bad News Bears will earn a spot at the PGL Major in Stockholm; however, with their coach in tow, the odds for the organization-less team outplacing the likes of Liquid, FURIA, 00NATION, EXTREMUM and Extra Salt have taken a turn for the worse.

Bad News Bears have told HLTV.org that they have no intention of disbanding, and that they will hope to finalize a fifth player to fill the vacant spot on their roster after their IEM Fall campaign.

He never got over the Leaf bullshit the BR fans (BR fans were in the wrong) did like a year and a half ago -- that roster doesn't even exist anymore. Leaf plays val now as well. Since then he's been tweeting weekly trying to caused drama with BR fans, BR teams, and BR players. He does knife giveaways and pistol giveaways with names like "BR SLAYER." He tried to cause drama with Godsent on twitter and played the victim afterward. Today, he was thrust into a 1v3 that was unfavorable and instead of trying (being a professional), he just bhopped in the open, threw his primary weapon away and gave up a free kill in OT. He was kind of throwing the entire game, but who knows. Peeking banana with no support, wide swinging angles into multiple known enemies, pushing smokes for no reason despite already having advantage...Said afterward that the team who wanted to win today won. Why he would think any org or serious sponsor would be interested in a roster with him on it, idk. Dude needs to take a step back from twitter for a while.

Nothing new here. Another NA player making North America CS look bad. Look. Jonji isn't anything special by any means. There are hundreds if not thousands of players in NA that could do what Jonji was doing or could do even better with good players surrounding you. And he leaves when rosters are locked and they are forced to use Madcow who is probably just as good as him so actually this isn't really bad news at all. Hopefully BnB picks up a good player and not another idiot like him.
