valens found using coach bug when on Cloud9; version with free roam revealed

The now-retired coach was found to be in the bugged spectator state on three maps during his time with Cloud9.

Soham "valens" Chowdhury, former coach of Cloud9 and current Head of Data Science at Evil Geniuses, has been found to have used the coaching bug on three occasions in online maps played multiple years ago, Dexerto has revealed.

Two of the instances are similar in nature to other offenses by coaches who have been banned, with valens seen spectating static areas on Inferno and Train. In both examples, he can be seen moving his mouse to follow and track players visible from where the spectator camera is positioned.

On the former map, he had a view of the B site for three rounds during an EPICENTER closed qualifier series against Liquid, while on the latter, he was in the bugged state for the opening pistol round with a view of OpTic's T spawn in ESL Pro League Season 7 North America.

valens was found to be using the coach bug on three separate occasions

However, the most surprising reveal is in a never-before seen version of the bug, in which valens is able to roam with a free-spectator camera while the round was live on Mirage in the same EPICENTER series against Liquid.

According to Dexerto, he first entered the state before the game went live, but was taken out of it following the restart of the round to kick off the match. He re-entered the state three rounds into the map after reconnecting to the server, and only remained in it for one round.

In a statement to same publication, valens explained that he came across the bug several times without an understanding of what it was, and stressed that no information was shared with the team. He also added that he thought it was simply a bug that would go away, and contacted the TO mid-game on at least one occasion.

"It was quite possible I was just waiting for it to reset since most weird glitches in-game kind of just went away after pressing some keys, like the weird height bug where your model can see over things until you crouch or press jump," he said.

“I definitely don’t know how it came to be and I didn’t seek it out in any way. I hope the lack of a pattern in getting to that game state is self-explanatory of my intent.”

Michal Slowinski, the veteran referee and tournament admin who played a key role in uncovering the scandal and helped to analyze demos for the Esports Integrity Commission (ESIC), has since commented that the free roam version of the bug was also a part of his investigation, and that the instances of valens using the bug were provided to ESIC.

However, the now-retired coach was not among the 37 coaches banned by ESIC in 2020 after the bug was first revealed to the general public, with news of its widespread abuse rocking the Counter-Strike world for months as more and more names began to surface of coaches who had abused the bug both in years past and during the online era.

The esports watchdog group stated in an August 2021 update that it was reviewing its sanctions matrix following the outcome of a number of appeals from coaches banned following the first report.

A second, unannounced batch of cases is also still being reviewed, with ESIC telling Dexerto that they are concluding discussions with Valve about the application of their sanction mechanics in relation to bans from Valve-sponsored events before revealing their findings.

Valve, meanwhile, informed Dexerto that their method for determining bans from the original one they had posted hadn't changed, and that there were no plans to update it.

Dood, it happened 3 times during his whole career. When you spec that many games in the cs:go client you're going to come across bugs, The issue lies if he replicate the glitch in other matches.

Well yeah. He was moved to the analyst role when he got banned, then went back to coaching Gambit last year. He's pretty much only an assistant coach/analyst now because they attended the major.

I forgot about supra ! But still, ppl act like nothing there, mostly because gambit pr is way better than heroic and they dont have a hunden factor, aka snitch.

the community have in general been hypocritical AF when it came to coach bug abusers. I mean 37 coaches were on that list and more are apparantly missing from it, but only heroic ever heard shit about it despite others abusing it to a much greater extend even in important t1 matches (former navi coaches)

Tbh heroic handled it very poorly though. It doesnt change what really happen on gambit side.

the only thing heroic did wrong in that instance was their weird announcement when hunden came back from his ban period, as if they celebrated him or some shit lmfao. But the hate was 100% singled out at them even before that, mainly due to posts like HLTV framing him as the "main villain" mentioning his name only in the title of the related article and having episodes on their hltv podcast where the main talking point was him while completely leaving out the fact that coaches from teams like gambit, navi, NIP, furia and many more had not only used it themselves, they had even used it to a way greater extend and affected the results in high tier tournaments which was something that was not the case with the 2 maps hunden was found guilty of using it in.

I agree hltv put a lot on emphasis on hunden, make it a special topic about him. Hunden was considering to be the next zonic. So, he was more popular in some way. I think the video after hunden accusation was too much. They try to explain in details. Even if it is right, it look like someone who interrogate by the police.

Sure. Don't get me wrong. I don't pity heroic. I'm just saying that they are really on the hot spot. The big difference is when the scandal went public, gambit yougster were nobody and heroic was around top1. Also, hunden was considering to be the next zonic. The guy was a "tad" arrogant too. Hunden snitched his old friends too. It didn't happen with other coaches.

They actually did punish coaches who had the bug but didn't share it with their players. Both RobbaN and Zonic are cases of this, giving them a 6 month ESIC ban was unfair where people like hunden actually abused it and got 15 months or whatever
2022-02-10 04:06

I agree that those who used it most got somewhat too small punishment. However noone can know for sure that Robban for example did not transfer the information. There is no actual way to know for sure. We only know that some people did use it for sure because they admitted doing so.

It was an Astralis Vs Faze game on dust and they lost 16-1, if they had info I'd guess they could pull off a few more rounds wouldn't they? Also for Zonic his team was just popping off at the time on every match so they can't tell for sure if he gave the info during a game or not
2022-02-11 05:22
0

Maybe his team didn't want to use the info but he still tried to give it to them? Anything is possible. As for Zonic, that logic would apply to 80% to all coaches who got bans. Only those who have admitted using the bug we can say for sure. But they made a decision to punish everyone who were found in the bug and didn't try to fix it immediately because for most cases it is impossible to know. Literally impossible, for many reasons. I mean, if they would only punish those who can be proven to have used the bug in their advantage, could even zoneR have been punished? Maybe he just liked locking his view to the bug, but never even spoke with his team during matches.

FBI were at a minimum involved but since then we have no clue tf is happening, no bans, no temporary suspensions, no warnings to TOs about suspected players, not a single update at all If the FBI is involved still then it's clearly extremely low fucking priority for them and it could be years until anything comes off it, both in CS and VALORANT I get that ESIC can't transgress on an FBI case but it is a joke how long it has taken and how all these suspected players have basically had 2 years extra time to keep doing shit

I doubt he was able to use it, after all we are talking about a guy who gave wrong map veto for his igl in major semis and when he spot his mistake he was like "yes very sad, anyway ".

If he reported it to the TO I don't see why he should be punished in all honesty. Not that it matters at this point. Valens is never going to coach again.

I think he should be punished anyway. Its not because he reported himself that he can get away with this.

If it's found he wasn't triggering the bug and he reported it to the TO he should still be punished? Thank god you aren't in charge.

Valve doesnt really care if someone is cheating thats why. Heroic should lose their titles and prize money.

What a suprise more cheaters in csgo. Still players can keep prize money and titles. Coaches just moved to analyst positions aka nothing happens.

So the referee analyzed Valens' demos during the ESIC Witch Hunt but they decided to leave Cloud9 out of the scandal even though their coach had a free camera against Liquid? Now that's "interesting" to say the least...

Why weren't all the guilty ppl banned for at least a year is bs. Players should be banned too. Sadly money rules the world so nothing was done about it. Foookin bs about integrity. Scene should sink and guilty should have punishment.

niko was about to be banned, but he played the disabled card. His disability prevents him from trusting others and Hunden told him that he was cheating because of their trust. I think players who know that their coach is cheating and didn't do anything about it should recieve same punishment regardless of money, disabilities, etc

Wasn't there a time when coaches were given the opportunity to come forward and admit they used/encountered the bug? And Valens didn't do that? Doesn't sound very honest but then again, same rules dont apply to americans as evidenced in this comment section

"the most surprising reveal is in a never-before seen version of the bug, in which valens is able to roam with a free-spectator camera while the round was live on Mirage in the same EPICENTER series against Liquid." Yeah, they all were able to do this, sadly nobody truly stood up for their own actions is just blamed everyone else. Ridiculous, thanks for trying to kill your own passion/sport for everyone. There should be a ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY for cheaters in eSports, Pay hefty fines and lengthy bans that will definitely hurt the team overall, if the majority of the team is involved then they should be disqualified from the Majors and all rankings for the event/s(they cheated in) pulled from the books. End of story.
