malbsMd leaves M80 after 11 months

M80 have bid farewell to Mario "⁠malbsMd⁠" Samayoa ahead of his reported move to G2, with the announcement all but confirming the 21-year-old's impending addition to the European lineup.

The Guatemalan rifler spent 11 months under M80's banner, during which the team fought to establish itself as North America's next-up after Complexity.

malbsMd was a key force in that effort as he averaged an impressive 1.32 rating in 2024 and kept that level up against top teams (1.21 vs. top-20 opponents, 14 maps) and on LAN (1.23, 33 maps), including a stand-out performance against G2 at ESL Pro League Season 19 (1.20, six maps).

M80 experienced a rapid rise under the leadership of Marcus "⁠maNkz⁠" Kjeldsen at the end of 2023, but were hamstrung by the Danish captain suddenly stepping back due to personal reasons ahead of IEM Katowice and the PGL Major Copenhagen Americas RMR.

The team were left scrambling on short notice and had to use coach Rory "⁠dephh⁠" Jackson as a stand-in, but even still, only narrowly missed qualifying for the Major following a loss to Legacy OCE.

Elias "⁠s1n⁠" Stein was picked up to replace maNkz and M80 immediately made an impression with him at EPL S19. They narrowly missed the playoffs despite securing an early series win over G2, losing out in two close series to BetBoom and in a rematch against G2 despite playing them close in one of the best maps of the year.

malbsMd had an off-showing at IEM Dallas, which M80 exited last place in the group stage, but has otherwise been in the best form of his career while playing for M80.

"It hurts to say goodbye brother, but you were such an amazing teammate and roommate," Fritz "⁠slaxz-⁠" Dietrich said in a heartfelt goodbye video from the players and organization.

"Sitting next to you, beating G2 and bantering with TaZ. We had so many great moments and it really hurts me to say goodbye, but you played so good for so long and you just deserve to make the next step. Everybody is so proud of you. You deserve it and I hope they treat you well over there."

How his expected home of G2 plans to shuffle positions and slot him in remains a glaring question as he shares a majority of his aggressive roles with Nikola "⁠NiKo⁠" Kovač, while Nemanja "⁠nexa⁠" Isaković occupied mostly anchor and supportive positions.

M80 have been in the process of finding a replacement for malbsMd for at least a week, but will have difficulty finding a suitable substitute for such a key piece of their roster.

He needs to get roles and not repeat the TeamOne mistake of putting him in bitch positions. Niko or Hunter need to give some up and Hooxi needs to set him up on T side for openers instead of running in jumping in with a mac-10, not getting a kill, and not getting traded

he did pretty good on teamone in NA and was a rising young player so he got picked up for 00nation because of coldzera. Who wouldn't want to play with him, did well but did not perform at the antwerp major qualifiers. Coldzera wanted to play with taco and other guys from godsent so malbs got kicked and he had a spot for him back in teamone so he just went back to the place he was most comfortable and still competitively viable teamone fell apart after the rmr paris qual failure and malbs was sitting there for 3 months waiting for a buyout, not doing shit and m80 came in and picked him up which imo is the first "big" org that looked at buying him I think eu orgs are scared of picking up na and sa players for good reason because you have to slot them into the meta and they have to take time to improve or they just fail badly. Who knows what happened but he just got really fucking good lol he is a gem of a player right now. Super consistent and just tears heads off. He has an average of 17 kills per map in m80 1.09 in teamone 1st time 1.09 in 00nation 1.15 in teamone 2nd time 1.25 in m80 now a 1.40 in g2????

I was sad and happy at the same time when he left Team oNe. Sad because he was in a brazilian team and I was always rooting for them, but happy obviously because that team wasn't going nowhere at all lol and he was getting a better chance elsewhere. It was very nice seeing him on M80, the team was performing very well but him going to G2 puts him on the top of the scene, which it's what I think he always deserved. So yeah, sad and happy

Yep, the roles definitely aren't ideal but I think what happens here is that Hooxi needs to play all the shitty roles and basically fill whatever is left over. Even if it comes down to him being a human decoy grenade... Not like it will matter anyways they know he's not fragging in most games, they basically want to create a roster that's so good Hooxi can have a 0.7 rating and they still win. If they kick Hooxi then whoever they pick up would have to do the same, it might be more natural for them (if they're used to playing shitty spots) but they'd also need an IGL or need to put Niko at full time IGL (which I don't think is the play)

Role vise I agree with you. You should be switching anchor for anchor. Now, nexa’s rifling is way worse since the update, holding angles nerf, drive by boost. He is struggling and stats are obv. so any player with better aim would be an upgrade in this position. Malbs can multi frag as entry, he should be good for multi as anchor. I hope that G2 switches things up a bit and have like 2 Nikos on the team so they play based on the spawn. Great rifler is a great rifler. Niko can entry or anchor, just hit heads ;) I hope Malbs has potential to be as good as prime Niko. Lets go G2

Well, malbs is a great addition on paper. In my opinion, they should have never kicked JKS, and G2 wouldn’t be in this position. However, the malbs signing could go really wrong as he hasn’t played at tier 1 yet. Tier 1 doesn’t only mean playing against top opponents, but also having bootcamps, traveling all the time, playing event after event, facing pressure to win every tournament from management, and having great teammates like NiKo and m0NESY means more responsibilities. That being said, good luck to the youngster. Also +cadiaN -HooXI (to coach/analyst role) when?
