YEKINDAR explains why cadiaN's leadership didn't work and addresses form criticism

"I understand fans who are angry about my form. My game is not worthy of my team and myself," the Latvian said in a recent podcast appearance.

YEKINDAR acknowledged criticism of his form and spoke on reasons why his individual level has taken a hit

Mareks "YEKINDAR" Gaļinskis appeared on a Friday podcast with Georgian YouTuber and founder of CYBERSHOKE Erik "shoke" Shokov. In it, he shared his thoughts on why Liquid's time with Casper "cadiaN" Møller didn't work out and addressed criticism about his form in 2024, among many other topics.

When speaking about his former captain, who was benched after just six months on the new Liquid lineup, the Latvian suggested cadiaN's micro-managing style didn't fit the roster.

"At the beginning, I thought cadiaN shared a lot of similarities with Jame. The biggest similarity is that he does a lot of micro-managing of his players," YEKINDAR said. "Generally, it's good, but I think most players lacked some individuality."

"I explained that international teams are carried more by an individual level and decision-making. That's why I think there were some inconsistencies, like Twistzz arrived from FaZe where he had some freedom in his roles, same with me and NAF."

"We had to adjust to each other a lot, so it was hard to find form as a team. There was no consistency," he went on. "cadiaN is a smart captain, but in this lineup it didn't work with the individuals we had and teamwork."

YEKINDAR likened cadiaN's style to Jame's

The 24-year-old also addressed the community criticism he has faced in this new roster due to his underwhelming form. He averages a 1.01 rating against top 30 opposition in 2024, a steep drop from his time in Virtus.pro and earlier iterations of Liquid, which earned him the 8th and 15th spot on the Top 20 players of 2021 and 2022 rankings.

"I understand fans who are angry about my form. My game is not worthy of my team and myself," he acknowledged before going over the reasons behind his drop in form.

YEKINDAR explained that despite putting more focus on his individual game since he stopped in-game leading upon the creation of the new Liquid, a lack of confidence has caused him to second-guess himself.

"I started playing a lot of FACEITs because I thought 'm0NESY plays a lot of FACEITs, donk plays a lot of FACEITs, I will too. It was great and I felt good when on FACEIT, but then I go to a tournament and kind of overthink," YEKINDAR said.

"When you suck for a while, you start believing less in yourself. These micro-moments when you decide to go or not to go, especially with my roles, they make a difference. When you overthink, you lose confidence, start playing worse and it becomes a never-ending cycle of mistrust in yourself.

"I started taking things easier. In the end, it's just a game and I understand I accumulated a lot of stress when I was in-game leading because of the fans. There is even a lot of skepticism about the fact that I was kept on the team, but in the end I realized I just need to enjoy it. Enjoy and don't worry, it will be all good if you deserve it."

In the podcast, YEKINDAR also shared new details around his departure from Virtus.pro in mid-2022, including two big names interested in him after his benching — MOUZ and G2.

"There were two teams who talked to me about making the move; the rest wanted to make changes after Cologne. Those were Liquid and MOUZ," the Latvian said. "Many teams wanted me after Cologne. For example, if I were to join G2, it would have happened after Cologne. We talked but didn't reach an agreement."

He ended up joining Liquid after buying himself out of his contract with Virtus.pro. In the interview, YEKINDAR shared that the buyout figure was at least $500,000.

Really? Not a good AWPer? Then how he can manage to get into top 20 player in 2023? And I've seen some crazy cluth from him in 2024. His rating worsening in 2024 since his still need to figuring out how to deal with Liquid rooster, while probably getting a lot of pressures from Liquid management.

+1. Always seems to me that twistzz desperately wants to be the hard carry of a team like ropz or NiKo of his own team, where he is the main star. The fact that in FaZe he did not even win a single mvp and got outshone by fucking 29 year-old hard entry rain must have driven his decision to leave FaZe

Why is Twistz moving to IGL if he wanted to be star player? Cadian has only igl’Ed young inexperienced players and never proved he could lead a team of very experienced players so I’m not sure what Liquid was thinking with the pickup originally. When Yekindar talks about Cadian micro managing alot which makes total sense seeing the players he igl’Ed in the past but that’s never going to work with players that have much higher achievements than he does.

im still mad that the cologne 22 mpv went to s1mple instead of twistzz or someone else on faze. s1mple was fucking carried in the final and choked the last map hard, still got the mvp while twistzz played out of his mind in the final. ffs

final 3 maps I agree, but first two maps he underperformed, which was balanced out by how s1mple underperformed map 3 and 5 and performed in the rest. s1mple won out in the MVP race fair and square thanks to his monstrous rating before the final. This is just recency bias at play here

idk how recency bias comes into play here. but i went to check the stats and yea maybe i oversimplified it but still´, imagine being s1mple on the day of the final, performing worse than 4 of the other 9 players, losing the final and still getting the mvp. I dont think he thought he deserved it. but what made it weird was that no one on faze was that close to the top overall, so i guess thats what made the difference

Reason I think they are quite close raw skill wise is because Rain is much less selfish while Niko will take everything that rightfully belongs to him. The way each treats their roles and tailors responses makes me think they are very close, just Rain happens to not get as much space. Where Niko gets an edge over Rain is his macro, Niko is undoubtedly better in that regard, add to it that Niko is allowed more space and control and you get a better output. But the way each of them deals with area they are supposed to control is, in isolation, very similar. Even if he is level below Niko, who the hell isn't... But my point is that Rain is a high class player who is very selfless.

So basically ego killed the team like we thought. Cadian wanted to implement a system like the one which succeeded in Heroic and the NA shitters + washindar wanted their individual freedom. Maybe you shouldn't have brought in a system IGL if you planned to play the same shitty individual counter strike that has failed Liquid for the past 4 years.

It's sad because there were rounds where it worked really well. For example, there was a Dust2 round where Liquid faked Long and skullz lurked through onto B and held for the B anchor to come back, killing him and Liquid rotated into an empty bombsite. We see Jabbi do the same thing on Astralis frequently. If this team fully committed to cadiaN's ideas and didn't let their egos get in the way they would be a very solid team.

+1 Either you commit to CadiaN's system as I though they would, or just don't sign the guy in the first place, you should've known what you were going to expect from him as a leader looking at Heroic the last 3 years

cadiaN came in saying he knew he needed to adapt. He wasn't able to, because of his own ego. Anyone who thinks they can micromanage players like NAF and even Twistzz are beyond help. Also part of cadiaN's style was/is to leave himself in the clutch, because he wants to be the hero, and that was never going to work when he had better clutch players in the team.

You don't just bring in a proven IGL like Cadian to "adapt" to an individual style of play. Look how that worked out for AleksiB on G2. Teams like this don't even want an actual IGL, they just want an emotional leader that can play bitch roles and take the back seat so they can go for the plays they want. The issue is that Twistzz and Yekindar are NOT good enough like NiKo and M0nesy to make this playstyle work.

cadiaN is proven with one squad and now he has exposed his inability to adjust his game to new pieces, he will struggle to find a new position. Meanwhile Twistzz and NAF are two of the most sort after players, so nice try downplaying their skills.

I think this is the issue with players trying to make teams in CS (and other esports/sports as well). They think they can just throw together an all star team and because they are all individually talented they can somehow work it out. From the outside we can see how stupid it is but the players legitimately think it will work out great.

The surname is of Slavic origin with a Latvianized ending. This is due to Latvian grammar and has more to do with paperwork than with actual background. But it's likely that Mareks has mixed Latvian and Russian cultural background which is not uncommon.

That's not really a good recency example though. Most Chinese Singaporeans in their 20-30s (Im 31 myself) can speak decent Chinese but those under 20 are shit at it. Latvia feels like the same, where the younger ones gladly abandon a language for whatever reason, political in the case of Latvia.

Team brings in a highly skilled IGL to an under-performing group. IGL tries to use his skills to help them win, they say nah - we good and ignore the calls and management that worked in Heroic with less skilled players. The ego driven "good" players who were under-performing said we don't need you to fix our squad, so go somewhere else. Cadian then shakes his head and says - yes, I see you did so well prior to me coming to set up a playstyle - I must be the problem. So, keep the guy ignoring calls and dying instantly every round with zero impact and play FACEIT style CS2! Smart ideas these players have.

It was a brand new core, cadiaN didn't join an underperforming team. So WTF are you on about? cadiaN joined a star studded team and tried to tell them how to play instead of adapting his leadership, cadiaN is the one with the ego that couldn't adapt. Who the heck tries to micromanage NAF and Twistzz.

I wanted them to keep going until Cologne, so no idea what narrative your addled brain is trying to feed you. An addled brain that tries to say a brand new core, was a struggling existing team. And in the end, cadiaN will struggle to get another gig, because he is inflexible and struggles to adapt to his teammates.

As smart of a comment as your region is good at CS. Redicolous what you saying. Ofc cadian deserves better than this incredibly overrated "star studded" team with Washindar and Skull. Twistzz and Naf are by no means that good either. Certainly, not on the level of broky, ropz, spinx, KSCERATO or dev1ce. I swear NA teams just deeply suck.

You're not him mate, as good as your region is, it makes no difference to your own ability, so enjoy that faux superiority. Twistzz and NAF are two of the most sought after talents, either would raise the stocks of almost every top 10 team. But sure, you keep telling yourself they are mid. cadiaN will struggle to find a Tier 2 team to lead because he has proven his ego cannot adapt his style to suit his pieces. He had an opportunity here to cement a legacy, and now that is gone.

Funny how your reading comprehension is so poor that you connect my comment to my own ability. Wtf men. Also, how is what I wrote considered superiority? What is wrong with you?

Not bringing skullz would be a smart idea in the first place. As they bringed him, and kick IGL I say Liquid is done.

So it came down to the players not listening to their IGL Lol well at least he cleared it up. You wanted to be selfish instead of taking orders from the player who’s role it is to command you

But at least Niko never sucked nearly as badly as Yekindar 2024, at no pint in time throughout his entire career. Niko is a top 5 ALL TIME player, Yekindar is an entitled tier 2/3 player at best.

If they all wanted to continue to play in a style that allows them to do whatever they want, why did they even let the cadiaN signing happen in the first place? Surely one of them should've been like "this cadiaN guy likes to play in a certain system that we don't want. We should tell management to get someone else"

So pretty much as we all thought. Cadian micro managed everyone. Big pay check of liquid (yekindar) didn’t want that. Explains why they looked like a mess out there. Cadian isn’t the most liked by fans. His calls are solid if a team buys into them. But ego got in the way and lead to liquids demise.

There are just zero reasons for Liquid to keep YEKiNDAR I simply can't understand why after all this time and failures they keep their BIGGEST problem in the squad. I feel sorry for Twistzz and NAF wasting their time with such a failing org that can't build a good roster around them. It's about time to negotiate with coL over EliGE boys ... bring in a solid IGL and AWPer and bring Liquid back to their golden days.

Every single person with eyes could see yekindar deserves a kick dude pushes smokes without someone to trade or asking flashes....... -"cadian bad IGL he micromanages too much".. well clearly we know cadian couldn't say sht to these kids and had no power of managing tactics if yekidar just solo fked almost every single round with his freedom..

I hate when pro players who get paid 20-40k say that kind of shit. If you think it's only a game then it means you're not motivated enough and dont deserve a spot on the team that wants to compete on the highest level.

I dont think EU IGLs can work for NA counter strike, na and eu counter strike have distinct mentalities as to how a team should be ran and when you try to combine these mentalities they dont mix well. NA is more individualistic in their approach, while EU has a more team oriented mentality. Of course these are generalization of how these scenes approach the game Or maybe im talking out my ass rn idk

Sounds like typical spoilt NA mentality, I want my freeeeedom, I don't like being told. I wanna have fun! Dum dum CadiaN for telling me how to play! uaaaaaaaahh That's how I summarize this view, Twistzz, NAF and YEKINDAR gives that spoilt brat vibe for sure, they would rather play with more freedom despite a more micromanag'y IGL (not necessarily CadiaN but talking generally here) could bring better results. They are not even willing to give it a go.

Hopefully they'll pick up HooXi that will give them their freedom and watch that team drop to 20-30th place, would be deserved so they can learn something finally.

So you have no confidence, you're shaky, don't know what to do, and yet you don't want the igl to tell you what to do, but instead do your own ****-ups. Makes sense. I mean who'd want to win anyway

CadiaN is a good IGL, but micromanaging pros is insanely bad at this level. It does not work, as you let someone force something onto themselves that isn't natural to them at all. Play your strategy, if it does not work out exactly like you want, review it later and communicate solutions with the team. Then let them adjust in their way to the solution next time. That being said, he isn't the be all end all. He too can evolve. And I think it is a good step to bench him for him to grow stronger as an IGL. I think that if he takes the lesson to chill more and be more flexible as an IGL instead of micromanaging everything, he will bounce back stronger. As a management specialist I can tell you that every research shows that micromanaging specialist or knowledge ridge functions never works. You need to give people in those roles a sense of responsibility and freedom to take it.
