Liquid's new in-game leader has confirmed he had the "final say" in the squad's rebuild.

Twistzz led the process that saw Liquid land on jks and ultimate

Russel "⁠Twistzz⁠" Van Dulken has taken responsibility for Liquid's rebuild in an interview with Pley.gg, confirming he had the "final say" in the side's transfers.

The interview came ahead of Twistzz's first event as an in-game leader at BLAST Premier Fall Groups.

His transition to captain has not been greeted with universal praise, with the likes of Aleksandar "⁠kassad⁠" Trifunović pointing out that, at 24, he is still in the prime of his career when it comes to fragging.

Twistzz, however, knew it was coming: "I feel like it was kind of inevitable for me to become an in-game leader. It was already lingering in my mind at the end of 2023 but I didn't expect it to happen so soon [...] If I stayed [at FaZe] for two or three years, I probably would have become the captain at some point."

As Casper "⁠cadiaN⁠" Møller's influence waned, Twistzz's grew to the point where he was doing a "lot of captain work" at the end of last season, he says.

"I was already very vocal in-game as a mid-round caller, communicating a lot for others and myself. YEKINDAR and I also had a lot to do with trying to get people on the same page last season, trying to figure out the system.

"Logically it makes the most sense to have your most experienced player be the captain." He later added, "I think it's not the biggest change for myself."

As captain, Twistzz also had plenty of say in transfers and led the scouting process.

"At the end of the day, I did have the final say in this rebuild. [...] Liquid has given me a lot of trust and believed in the scouting that I've done.

That led Twistzz to point Liquid towards Justin "⁠jks⁠" Savage — with whom he won IEM Katowice 2022 — and the relatively unknown AWPer Roland "⁠ultimate⁠" Tomkowiak.

"I already had a plan to fill a more aggressive role within the team. You can easily see that this mindset fucked it up from the getgo. I also love the way he talks and is completely full of himself: I scouted, I came up with the idea, I want, I, I, I... EVEN if that is actually the case, decency tells you to include the people who helped you and communicate it as a "we", this then also gives the option to shift blame, or at least split it between a couple of ppl, because now if anything goes wrong, it'll be HIS failure, HIM fucking up, and HIM rightfully so getting all the blame. *grabs popcorn*

winning ESL pro league, being a constant top 3-5 contender for a year or more, and a bunch of other things, all of this with a much less star-powered team. I don't like to see someone fall, I just like people that achieve their triumphs in a team environment to value said team. This article didn't give me the impression that he does. And when I think about that I also think about the other pieces of the team that get plenty of blame but little of the glory in such scenarios. You may prefer a strong leader, I prefer a teamplayer. Twistzz (And Yekindar) need to be humble. This project should be a failure so they start coming down their high horse (Kinda hard for Yekindar if he hasn't after the Rainwalker fail). Basically just confirmed everything people speculated: he and Yekindar not buying into a proper system and that their talent scouting sucks. Hope the best for them anyways, pressure is on Twistzz now. Also I find it kinda funny that it was Twistzz that wanted jks, a notoriously quiet player.
