Kjaerbye retires from CS:GO

The Dane cites a lack of hunger to compete at the highest level as his reason to hang up the mouse.

Markus "Kjaerbye" Kjærbye has announced that he is taking a step back and retiring from Counter-Strike at an elite level, leaving behind the HYENAS project he was competing with while on FaZe’s bench.

The Danish rifler is stepping away from the game at the age of 23, but despite his youth, he leaves some impressive accolades to his name, which include becoming the youngest Major MVP at ELEAGUE Major 2017, which he won at the age of 18 with Astralis, and making the top 20 players of the year list twice, ranking 16th and 15th in 2016 and 2017, respectively.

Kjaerbye has not yet decided if he will remain linked to CS in the future

Kjaerbye shockingly left Astralis in early 2018 to join the other Danish squad vying to become a powerhouse with the backing of F.C. Copenhagen, North, but the team never fulfilled its potential and only won one big LAN event, DreamHack Masters Stockholm 2018, before Kjaerbye decided to try his luck outside of Denmark. He joined FaZe in August of 2020, but the international combine struggled to get results at a time in which one of the team’s stalwarts, Nikola "NiKo" Kovač, departed to G2, not long after which Kjaerbye himself was moved to the bench as he was unable to find his best form.

Following his removal from FaZe’s starting five, Kjaerbye joined up with two former North teammates, Philip "aizy" Aistrup and Nicklas "gade" Gade, in a new Danish team known as HYENAS, although the new squad failed to make an immediate splash and a lack of hunger to strive to be the best has made the former Astralis, North and FaZe player decide to step down from competition.

The 23-year-old has not discarded remaining close to Counter-Strike in the future, although he could just as well pursue other opportunities unlinked to CS, the game he has dedicated a large part of his life to over the past decade, and has made the following statement regarding his decision to retire:

"The time has come for me to say goodbye to gaming as a professional Counter-Strike player. It is with a heavy heart I am writing this, but as of right now, I have no longer the hunger and determination it requires to compete on top level. This game has been a huge part of my life for the past 10 years, and I feel this is the time for me to look for new horizons and opportunities. Future work can be both inside and outside the game. Time will tell.

"It has been a fantastic rollercoaster ride, which has given me way more than I have ever imagined when I started playing video games. To this day a big part of this adventure still feels surreal. As every other career it has brought many ups and downs – they have all made me stronger, and ultimately in many ways also shaped me into the person I am today.

"I want to thank the organisations that picked me up and believed in me. Thanks to every colleague and teammate, with whom I have travelled all over the world – it has been a blast! And a big hug goes out to all my fans, family and friends, who followed me in good as well as bad times.

"Thanks for everything guys!"

I mean, it hurts me obviously, I was cheering for VP ofc. in that final, but I respect him and Astralis a lot, and I can only imagine how hard mentally even it had to be to comeback from 7-13 in such a match, so I respect that.

Pretty sad but not too surprising to be completely honest. He obviously peaked during the major and made a huge mistake by leaving astralis. Imagine trying to compete at the same level knowing that you would almost certainly never reach those heights. Definitely one of the most interesting careers of a CS player

I mean, honestly I think he believed in that North project, and I can't blame him, because they had the resources and everything to be the best Danish team, but they semt to never pick the right players. But he had a great career, full of up and downs, and he will be remembered for sure.

It was either him or dupreeh, and the bottom line is dupreeh is by far the more complete player. Him staying with Astralis wouldn't have changed much for him, but the dominant Astralis wouldn't have existed.

It was either him or Magisk. dupreeh would have played anker, Kjaerbye would play entry since he was the star back then.

Magisk was a replacement for Kjaerbye, and the primary reason Astralis improved with that transaction was because Kjaerbye and Dupreeh both had conflicting roles. To get a similar structure would've been either Kjaerbye or Dupreeh leaving, and Dupreeh was the better overall player, if that makes sense. This is what I meant primarily.

It doesn't matter what he's done. The fact is that he's 23 and he's retiring. That is too soon in any sport in the world. So yeah, he's washed up.

The thinking of dumb people.... No that does not mean you are washed up. It means you are moving on to do something else.. If you work at MCD at 18, and decide to retire from that to do something else, that does not mean you are washed up. If you are director of a big company at the age of 30, and decide to retire from that to do another job, bigger or smaller, it does not mean you are washed up. just means you want to do something else, for reason that will improve your life. The age does not matter for when you decide you want to do something else, if that is something you does to better what ever your life is. It does not mean what you had was bad.. maybe, maybe not.. It just mean you are gonna do something different.. A thing that is actually a very good thing. rather than doing the same thing all your life.

The very definition of the word washed up is when a player can't perform at the same level they used to. That is undebatable and your examples are shit, because we're talking about sports. Kjaerbye at 23 years of age had already hit his ceiling 2 years prior to that and never performed at the same level he did when he won the major. So yes, he is washed up and if you can't see that, you're the dumb person here.

Stupid statement. Its impossible to say wether or not he hit his peak 2 years ago since the teams he was apart of afterwards were nowhere near the team he had around him at Astralis. Do you Think magisk hit his peak randomly 2 weeks into the Astralis transition, or could he possibly be the same caliber player with a much greater team sorrounding him compared to his OG and north days?

This has to be the dumbest ive seen on HLTV today... that take some doing.. "The very definition of the word washed up is when a player can't perform at the same level they used to." Just look at what you are saying here.. this means every person.. in every sport ( just to let it stay in sports then ) will be washed up at some point. as soon as they drop 1% from when they are best, they would be washed up. if they play to the age of 40. and retire on the top, they would be washed up because they are not as good as they where when they where best. Messi, Ronaldo... washed up because they have been better than they are now. Its such a dumb statement I have to guess you are just trying to make your point stick so you are saying stuff without thinking about it. Washed up is a bad term to begin with, and really only used by toxic people living in a basement and doing nothing with their life. Its not a real term in sports.. there are talents that never became a star and stars falling to be nothing. but the term "washed up" is not a sports term.. its a toxic fan term. And after that, even using it the term does not speak of a player as soon as the player is not as good as they once where, no matter when they retire or is still active, the way you say it, retiring is not even a issue. - washed up ( however bad ) is used for players who is not at the level needed but keeps playing.. hanging on for the fame the player once had and to get the last amount of money. something that is often used for players that are old and should retire but decide to hang on. A player that have been playing on highest level but choose to retire to do something else, because its for the best, is not washed up. he is just retiring.. and just because you stop in a sport does not mean you are washed up. no matter how old you are.

I understand the HLTV culture where being toxic is part of it but some of the comments are really bad, This is his last post, he may go through it and find such hate for no reason. No one deserves hate specially on a farewell note. This could be emotional for him so let's give him a simple thanks and good luck for his future. Be kind.

"kjaerbot was easily astralis' worst player. " Put any NA player or any player from.the current complexity roster there and they'd be the worst player of that goat astralis roster as well. That shit roster is getting carried by two tier2 Danes, neither having won as much as kjaergod

Be more specific and say complexity’s entire time in csgo. You said complexity’s history which will date back to whenever they entered the scene. And even if we are talking strictly Csgo, complexity has won more than him lol.

Yea it seems kinda bizarre to me too, especially since given some time he could have probaply shaped Hyenas into a legit top 10 team or alternatively used it as a method of getting back into top tier CS, it really is a shame man, to see on of my favorite players go like this :(

I have a few takes on this. Probably has to do with some with ego. Not saying he has an ego but like in general let’s be real, this man was on Astralis, faze, and north but is now stuck grinding MDL when he used to be on the top which can probably be demotivating unless you want to get back to where you were which maybe he does or doesn’t. NA CS faced the same problems with their players as well. A lot of the t2/t3 players who lost their teams or orgs due to lack of results are now in MDL getting paid less. Which in reality led to many of them taking the easy road to Valorant instead of putting in the work and grinding it out. They’re just making easy money and stealing paychecks cause a lot of them are just washed.

I know a lot of people hate him for being a "snake" but don't realize how much being a major mvp at 18 can mess up your motivation/goals. Imagine expecting and wanting a long hard grind to the top, and then you basically peak at 18. I will miss kjaerbye. GL in your next endeavor brother

Nice. Fucking trash Hyenas took the last spot of FP3 which would have gone to Havu otherwise. Now this shitter retires and it was all for noting. I know Havu can only blame themselves for not qualifying, but... Makes me mad, but just because I am a pleb.

Sad to see him go as he obviously had some personnal issues. He was overall good in North, had some troubles at some point and then took a break : maybe that was en early sign. Also, it's pretty difficult to judge him from his time in Faze, that mess of a team. GL Markus in whatever you do next, remember kid you're very young still :)

Smart move. CSGO changed a lot after 2017 updates ; becoming pug game, tapping style and etc which damaged old players like Kjaerbye, Fer and many more who were riflers but giving advantage to awp players like S1mple, Device, Zywoo, Shiro, degster etc. Most of players nowadays are pug players, Kjaerbye wasnt one of them and he doesn't belong to this generation of unsocialised, less-skilled, pug players for sure, in game where deagle is more like sniper for heads, where every second upcoming star is awp, where no eco in rounds, where every second kiddo without visiting Internet Cafee becoming main star thanks to pugging platforms.. We have quality players & teams atm in proffesional scene, but it's around 20% of them, nothing else Wish u best in future, this is best decision you should make in this jungle of game.. GL further Kjaerbye

Exactly. It feels bad that he left especially for me.I followed 3 players to become player which i am now-JW,KennyS and Kjaerbye coz my aim is good but shaky and it comes from high sens which i like(it helps me with AWP coz i am AWPer).

He's had "lack of motivation" ever since he ditched Astralis in 2017 after winning a major. What is wrong with this guy?

some people once they reach the pinnacle (for him winning a major & getting mvp) lose motivation. for him I don't think he completely lost motivation as he kept playing for 4 years, but he probably never cared as much as he did back then.
