PGL Cluj-Napoca teams announced

The MongolZ, FaZe, EF, and MOUZ are among the invited teams for the event in February.

FaZe are among the teams that accepted the Cluj-Napoca invite

PGL has announced the sixteen invited teams to PGL Cluj-Napoca from Valve's Global Standings. The $1,250,000 event's group stage will take place at the PGL Studio in Bucharest, starting February 14, before moving to the BT Arena on February 21-23 for the playoffs.

The tournament will feature two top 5 teams in Valve's global ranking, The MongolZ and FaZe, along with MOUZ, Eternal Fire, and Falcons from the top 10.

Brazilian fans will get representation from three teams, FURIA, paiN, and MIBR, while North American fans will be able to follow Complexity and Wildcard.

The likes of Astralis, Virtus.pro, 3DMAX, BIG, SAW and Australia's top side, FlyQuest, round of the roster.

Several of these teams have already kicked off their season at BLAST Bounty Season 1, most excitingly Eternal Fire, who went on to reach the best-of-five grand final where they failed to keep up with Danil "donk" Kryshkovets and Spirit.

Fans wanting to see all of these teams before they travel to Romania will have the chance to at IEM Katowice, starting January 29, where all 16 have been seeded either into the first stage or the group stage.

too many tournaments. not much preparation-time. not playing a tier 1 tournament wouldnt be that bad for the team´s ranking, while booming out at the tournament after the first few games caused by lack of prep would certainly be followed by dropping in the ranking.

People are complaining but I really dont mind, we cant have every single tournament have the same teams, it still has a ton of great teams but the this also makes the majors and colognes etc, more important cause thats where all the best teams are, no one is skipping those

yeah I understand that, especially for those that already bought tickets but personally im happy we still have some good teams while also having space for more T2 teams to get lan experience and if theyre good enough arena matches as well. Imo its still an exciting tournament with teams to root for, would be sick with a mongolz vs EF final but either way I still think its a big benefit to the scene overall and navi will have very many tournaments to play this year anyway

Valve does have a tier 2 definition for events that allows them to filter the VRS invites and invite teams starting at a lower VRS rank. This event is defined as tier 1 though.

This will happen more in the future, but also for ESL tournaments. For instance, Faze is not playing at EPL. Teams will choose and pick what they feel suits them the best, it might be that teams skipping PGL will end up regretting it at some point if they fall down in the rankings when it would've been easier to go there and have a good placement. That's why I believe it will balance out at some point. Regards

Yeah i don't understand it too. Later in the year Blast rivals colides with Iem melbourne, while Pgl astana collides with Iem dallas, so most teams will anyway skip on of those colliding events, which will grand them more time to bootcamp
2025-01-28 11:31
2
I understand why the top teams skipped, they can rest, perhaps they want to see how not going to a tournament is like. But what makes me scratch my head is why Liquid and GamerLegion declined the invite. Liquid is outside the top 8, they need these VRS points for easier seeding in tournaments as well as not get overtaken by any other anerican team so they get that stage 3 invite. GamerLegion on the other hand is in the midst of this huge dogpile of teams fighting to stay in the top 20, and were the only team outside the top 10 to decline the invite.

I agree it doesn't make any sense for GL, and I think that's a bad move for them, they really need to perform at EPL/Kato. Same for Liquid, if they fail Kato and EPL they're in deep shit in terms of VRS, time to start playing I guess. Regards

I presume GL didn't go for it because they are banking on the fact, they'll be playing BLAST Rising and want to go to the BLAST Open instead. Nothing else would really make too much sense for them. Liquid might be content with bootcamping since they'll get the invite for IEM Dallas anyway and to instead focus on EPL and BLAST Open first. From a prize money perspective, I'd have taken PGL over BLAST for the immediate rankings boost but org probably looked at the frequent flyer programme and said "we want some of that"

Not for Kato or Cologne probably, those have always been S-tier. The rest of the IEM circuit is kinda whatever though, for example IEM chengdu towards the end of the year would be in China when PGL is hosting an EU tournament at the same time basically, I feel many people would rather skip Chengdu there. Would be fun, luckily we get to see them at Kato. If they do well we'll see them in other tournaments, especially if they manage to hold their mid 20s spot, i dont doubt we see more declinations when we get to the mid-season after EPL as teams start to feel travel exhaustion and prepare for the jetlag of going to places like Dallas, Houston, Doha, and Monterrey. Some of these teams might try to play in 3 of these events, i cant imaging how it must feel. Imperial will get their chance, these girls are good.

Fair enough. The schedule is so tight this year, and teams will have more options to choose tournaments they want to play. Spirit, G2, Navi may choose to prioritize Intel Grand Slam. Other teams need more points to keep up with ranking for invites. Second half of March and April will be so busy. Don't forget major qualify for Austin happens in mid of April, only one day after PGL Bucharest, and 4 days later is IEM Melbourne. Teams now have to choose carefully, otherwise they don't have time to bootcamp though.

Since almost the whole tier1 declined invites and you have to go with these tier2 teams I really can't understand why not to make qualifiers with some more teams invited and at least have some stronger teams based on current form, maybe some underdog runs as well. Right now it looks like another boring tournament with unjustifiably high prize money

I agree with everything except for the prize money thing. How can you even argue that??? For once in history someone decided to increase the money to an already high cost industry, you should be happy about that

Spirit and Navi decline because they have a chance to win the Intel Grand Slam. From the other teams I don't understand why they declined this event.

FaZe still had mathematical chance to win Grand Slam if they would win Katowice and next ESL event. They announced they will skip EPL and yet they go to PGL event before that... It's either very poor planning or they don't believe in themselves at all.

Apparently Spirit, NaVi, Vtality, G2 and Liquid Declined for EPL, which is kinda ehh fair for igm for some but vrs points here better than EPL (?)

PGL Cluj-Napoca: The Championship Missing Top Teams? So NAVI, Vitality, and G2 are headed to Rio (IEM Rio) in November 2024 for a tournament with a $250,000 prize pool, skipping the chance to compete in Europe at the PGL Cluj-Napoca, which boasts a $1,250,000 prize pool. This decision is surprising, especially considering there doesn’t seem to be another major tournament scheduled after Katowice, and PGL Cluj-Napoca offers significantly more prize money than Katowice itself. The scheduling choices feel unusual—could there be other factors influencing them? Adding to the intrigue, this marks a special moment for Romanian fans, as IM becomes the first Romanian player in a top-tier team to potentially play in his home country. For context, here are the prize distributions: IEM Rio: 1st: $42,000, 2nd: $20,000, 3-4th: $20,000 each, 5-6th: $10,000 each, 7-8th: $6,000 each, 9-12th: $5,000 each, 13-16th: $4,000 each. PGL Cluj-Napoca: 1st: $400,000, 2nd: $187,500, 3rd: $150,000, 4th: $87,500, 5-8th: $62,500 each, 9-11th: $31,250 each, 12-14th: $18,750 each, 15-16th: $12,500 each. Feel free to post this on main forum if you find it ... interesting.
